Abstract
This chapter reviews Wireless Distribution System (WDS). WDS seems to be a good solution to extend a wireless network a hop or two in a small residential environment. The chapter discusses how to use 5 GHz as a backhaul option, and explained DLink “kits” used for client access. The chapter presents the ways to expand the traditional concept of Wi-Fi as a wireless local area network (WLAN) into a wireless wide area network (WWAN). Using the technology in ways not intended by the original protocol often pushes the edge of the envelope in terms of performance and usability. The chapter also discusses several social and community elements of wireless networking, as experienced by SoCalFreeNet. SoCalFreeNet is a non-profit group dedicated to building public wireless networks.
