Abstract
With thoughtful planning and careful implementation of every detail, from the choice of enclosure to the type of fastener used to secure the antenna, one can take steps to help ensure the outdoor wireless networks' dependability regardless of weather conditions. This chapter presents suggestions on choosing appropriate enclosure, selecting proper hardware, securing the communications equipment inside the enclosure, securing the enclosure itself, constructing a sturdy mast for the antenna, and protecting the equipment from lightning strikes. The first thing one has to decide is the size of enclosure, for which one must determine the dimensions of the equipment housed by the enclosure. The simplest method of determining the size requirements for the enclosure is to take the equipment to Home Depot or an electrical supply store to physically determine whether or not it fits. Another sizing issue to keep in mind is the RJ-45 (Ethernet) connector jacks and serial ports usually located on the perimeter of communications equipment. One has to also take into consideration the location of the mounting points necessary for securing the enclosure to the structure.
