Abstract

We discuss theoretical aspects of the electrical double layer at nanolayer, starting with the Gouy-Chapman-Stern model. After discussion of the general feature of electrical double layers around charged surfaces without surface structures, we consider the electrical double layers around charged entities covered with surface layers of the order of nanometers, that is, nanolayer-coated surfaces. We deal with surfaces coated with a nanolayer of porous material and that of polyelectrolytes. The effect of discreteness of charges in the surface nanolayer on an electrical double layer around the surface is then discussed. Finally, we consider the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation by taking into account the effects of finite ion size.
