Abstract

This chapter deals with advanced polyimide (PI) fibers. PI fibers have outstanding mechanical properties, high thermal stability, good solvent resistance, and excellent light stability, and have been considered as desirable potential candidate materials for long-term servicing in severe environments, especially in aerospace and environmental conservation. The synthesis of the spinning solutions including the “two-step” polymerization method and the “one-step” polymerization method is first introduced. Then, the production pathways of PI fibers are described, in particular the wet-spinning method and dry-spinning methods. The structures and properties of aromatic PI fibers are discussed in detail, including the aggregation structures, chemical structures, etc. Finally, the advances in industrialization and applications are described.
