Abstract

Algae oils are known for their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid. The health benefits associated with these fatty acids have prompted the development of alternative sources of these compounds and have also induced their application both for food-enriching purposes and for being included as ingredients of dietary supplements. Commercially available nutraceuticals with algae oils from Schizochytrium sp., Ulkenia sp., and Crypthecodinium cohnii are currently on the market. This chapter will review the composition of these oils and their use in clinical studies that evaluate their biological effects. A brief summary of some commercial products currently available on the market will be also presented.
