Abstract

The current chapter discusses naturally occurring phenolic chemicals as well as their abundance and distribution in intra- and interpopulations of various algae species. The category of metabolites with the largest structural variety and the highest quantity in seaweeds are phenolic compounds. The best-studied seaweed polyphenolic class is phlorotannins, which are found in greater proportions in brown seaweeds and to some extent in red and green seaweeds, and other polyphenolic chemicals such as bromophenols, flavonoids, phenolic terpenoids, and mycosporine-like amino acids are also present. The compounds that have previously been found and described exhibit a wide spectrum of bioactivities and have the potential for application in a variety of industrial industries. This chapter aims to offer a thorough understanding of the phenolic chemicals found in seaweeds.
