Abstract

Finding new immunomodulatory compounds is essential to treat the increasing incidence of immune-related diseases and to develop new and more efficient immunotherapies. Algae are a potential, abundant, and valuable source of immunomodulatory compounds. Although the composition of the algal bioactive molecules and the mechanisms involved in the immune regulation are sometimes unknown, the research conducted in the last few years has allowed us to unveil some of the key components, which have been summarized in this chapter. For a better understanding of the immunoregulation concept and its implication in health and disease, a brief overview of the human immune system has been included in the first part of the chapter.
