Abstract

Polarization is an important property of light that affects the light interaction with the matter and can result in misleading interpretation of the measurements. Hence, the polarization should be taken into account at the stage of experimental planning. This chapter discusses the effects of polarization and the techniques used in measuring them. The polarization of electromagnetic waves or light waves and the interaction of polarized light with various media are also discussed in the chapter. The applications of polarized measurements used to extract additional information of the subject under study are also provided. Justifications for taking into account the rotational diffusion to achieve accurate measurements of the fluorescence lifetime are provided.
