Abstract

This chapter discusses the effects of water pollution, especially oil spills and bioremedial actions that can be rendered to save the environment in case of such disasters. Oil spills could be operational or accidental. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenols are primary contaminants in an oil spill. Bioremediation is of interest worldwide as a potential oil spill cleanup technique under certain geographic and climatic conditions and this chapter focuses on this aspect of pollution remediation. This chapter thus sums up the various physical, chemical, and biological methods used to clear oil pollution in aquatic environments.
