Abstract
This chapter presents to the reader an introduction to petroleum biotechnology and the potential for the commercial installation of biotransformation as a part of refinery operations. Petroleum biotechnology is based on biotransformation processes to recover, refine, and transform petroleum (and petroleum products) into valuable derivatives. The major applications of petroleum biotechnology are biotreatment of waste streams (waste water or gases), bioremediation of hydrocarbon-polluted soils and sediments, and finally, the microbial enhanced oil recovery. But the main well-established application is related to effluent treatment and bioremediation.
