Abstract

Abdominal pain is a very common symptom that can be either acute, reaching its maximum intensity within hours to days, or chronic, lasting weeks or even months. Pain typically results from mechanical obstruction of the gastrointestinal system or inflammation of the abdominal viscera due to infection, autoimmune disease, or ischemia. This chapter will focus on the approach to acute abdominal pain.
