Abstract

The pituitary gland, known as the master regulatory gland, oversees the homeostatic regulation of several metabolic and reproductive processes. The pituitary itself lies in the base of the skull and communicates directly with the hypothalamus, forming the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. This chapter reviews the anatomic divisions of the pituitary and their associated hormones, as well as a brief overview of specific disease states that result from perturbations of normal pituitary functioning.
