Abstract

Hundreds of transportation lines have been built around the world to alleviate traffic pressure. The underground section of a railway is an important part of the railway network. Several important problems related to environmental vibration and degradation in long-term service performance of structures are observed with the operation of underground railway lines. This chapter introduces the development of rail transit in China. The characteristics and typical engineering problems related to the underground railway system are then analyzed. The existing approaches and models for the prediction of the dynamic response of the vehicle–track–tunnel–soil system are also discussed. To conclude the chapter, the content and scope of this book is presented.
