Abstract

In this chapter we offer a historical overview of the emergence of fabric structures in Latin America, where there has been an evolution toward membrane structures since the development of wire meshes in the 1960s. As economic conditions have improved, and greater trust in the technology has developed as a result of successful examples and the incorporation of the topic in universities, the market for and size of projects have grown. Examples of fabric structure projects of different period are included from countries such as Brazil and Mexico, whose development began decades before the other countries in the region. Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Cuba, and Central America more generally, will also be covered. In addition, we shall discuss the role performed by the Latin American Tension Structures Net (www.latensored.org) in the development of this technology.
