Abstract

This chapter discusses the application of phase-change material (PCM) in architectural membranes. The PCM treatment of silicone rubber–coated fiberglass fabrics provides adaptive heat transfer and adaptive light transmission properties to tensile structures. Due to the adaptive heat transfer properties, the thermal comfort of the enclosure will be enhanced, and energy will be saved. The adaptive light transmission properties ensure that natural light penetrates into the structure during the day which will result in further energy savings. The chapter includes possible applications of architectural membranes treated with PCM.
