Abstract

Mimong(Sweet Dream, 1936), the oldest talkie film made in the Korean language in existence, became an instant target of many researchers in its cinematographical plot and methods when it first came to light. This article, based on former studies in film history, crossexamined several significant places in the colonial capital of Joseon depicted in the film with historical materials. As Sweet Dream dealt with a run-away modern girl, it showed some modern landmarks of Keijo. This paper found eight places that were fairly accurately identified with other photos of the time. Therefore, this paper examined the film as a text of reading city rather than film history and pursued the possibility of using it as a historical and cultural resource of today’s Seoul.
