Abstract

“Drive My Car”(Hamaguchi Ryusuke, 2021) is a film adaptating of Murakami Haruki's short story “Drive My Car”. Movie “Drive My Car” is actively expanded and accepted Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's play “Uncle Banya” in the novel. As a result, by adding performance practice episodes that don’t exist in the novel, the theme of the fate of human existence implied by “Uncle Banya” is multi-layeredly accepted. In this paper, we examined how “Drive My Car” adapts the novel “Drive My Car”. Going one step further, this paper tried to find out the relationship between the play “Uncle Banya”, the motif of the novel, and the film.
