Abstract

This study sought to analyze the factors that changed China's social and cultural phenomena by classifying and defining new words in China during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This study selected high-frequency new words as the subject of analysis by referring to the dictionary “2020 Chinese New Words” published by “China National Language Resources Surveillance Word Book” and data such as the Internet and SNS. According to the characteristics of the new word, it was classified into four categories: technical terms, new words, new use of old words, and Internet terms. In addition, the analysis of social and cultural phenomena and factors in China's COVID-19 is largely divided into three categories: social and cultural background, linguistic factors, and the development of information media. The study of the new language phenomenon has theoretical and academic research value in modern language applications, and at the same time, it is expected to provide meaningful reference materials to researchers who want to understand language changes and social and cultural phenomena that occurred during the COVID-19 era in China.
