Abstract

Based on Deleuze's image theory, the characteristics of the film image embodied in Michelangelo Antonioni's film “Red Desert” were analyzed. The characteristics of the image appearing in “Red Desert” can be classified into three characteristics. Firstly, it exemplifies the 'free indirect subjective' of the perception-image. Secondly, in “Red Desert”, the emergence of affection-image, which occupies the gap between perception-image and the action-image, arises from close-up or unframing, any-space-whatevers. Thirdly, images that share the characteristics of recollection-image and crystal-image have the characteristics of a precursor to the emergence of time-image. The purpose of the work of examining the film “Red Desert” through Deleuze's image ontology is to enhance the significance of the film's film art.
