Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine Chosun(1888-1897) by the eyes of a stranger who came from the other world, J. S. Gale with the cultural keyword of 'emotion' and find out the undercoverd meaning in his description. Throughout the study, Koreans' emotional characteristics which Gale had been interested in was discovered as three factors, wisdom, affection (acknowledgment, trust), and communitarianism. This study has meaning in that it examines the 19th century records with a focus on emotion and in that it examines the value of the emotions and affective resource of Chosun. And the attempt will be helpful in the production of Korean cultural contents and cultural assets based on traditional emotional keywords.
