Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand the Korean Wordplay Culture. A certain culture in a society typically exists with a phenomenological characteristic and foundational mentality. In order to analyze the wordplay culture, this paper first discloses phenomena of wordplay, notes systematic characteristics that enable such phenomena, and describes psychology of enjoying such culture. Various types of Korean wordplay include shortening syllable, lengthening syllable, modifying word composition, modifying phoneme, modifying syllable, repeating same sound, inverting syllable, homonym, making parody, using English pronunciation, modifying passage component, antithetical arrangement, talking at cross purposes, and acrostic poem. Main features of distinct relationship between wordplay and Korean language are easy communication post modification through superb readability, unconstrained composition through segmental characteristic, flexible formation of meaning through motivation, and new ideas for modifying shape due to easier separation and combination of strokes. A survey of 100 college students on the question of when they use wordplay showed that respondents use wordplay for convenience, humor, and change of mood. Wordplay as an alternative for verbal violence is another notable response.
