Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand that ‘experimental Heterotopia’ is the spatial singularity of contemporary art based on Foucault's ‘Heterotopia’. The Panopticon, a surveillance and discipline system, developed into an exhibition space, the White Cube. However, Heterotopia subverts the white cube and acts as a void in utopia. Heterotopic art is art as a ‘different space’ that deviates from regulations, subverts the system, and accepts all heterogeneous aspects. If ‘heterotopic art escaped from the panoptic white cube’ embodies a space that subverts the existing norms, ‘other space of contemporary art’ can be said to express Heterotopia as the heterogeneous appearance of art. Accordingly, the spatial characteristics of contemporary art are defined by Heterotopia is analyzed through the works of Duchamp and Eliasson to reveal that heterotopia forms an experiential relationship with the audience.
