Abstract

This study aims to examine the phenomenon and characteristics of the soundscape of Gageo-do in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do identified from documentary videos. The survey tools were 12 documentary videos produced by domestic broadcasting channels, and the types and characteristics of sound environment elements and the meaning of soundcape were analyzed by extracting elements that were directly heard or associated while watching the videos. Sound environment elements are composed of natural sound, mechanical sound, social sound, and quiet. The natural ecological environment of the island and the life of the residents can be imaged from the types and frequencies of sound environment elements. Keynote sounds, signal sounds, and soundmarks can be distinguished, and the anchovy fishing song of Gageo-do is a representative soundmark that forms a sense of intimacy and unity among the people in the community. It is necessary to be careful as the urbanization of the island due to the environmental destruction of forests and beaches and the overflow of mechanical sounds that do not interact with the lives of the residents change the soundscape of Gageo-do to a low-fi state. Just as the landscape of Gageo-do seen through the eyes can be felt as clear and beautiful, it is necessary to preserve and cultivate the sound environments of Gageo-do so that the soundscape can also be felt as clear and clean.
