Abstract
This article examines the competition between “space” and “placeness” in locationbased augmented reality (AR) mobile games, with a specific focus on Pokémon Go. It explores how personal experiences of place intricately intertwine with the overlay of playful digital information on the real world, allowing for the dynamic process of unmapping and remapping of places. Through a critical analysis of the conflict between spatial GPS and placeness within historical, religious, and political contexts in Pokémon Go, this study highlights the potential for transformative digital placemaking. It contributes to our understanding of how locationbased AR games reconstruct digital placevalues in users' environments.
