Abstract

This study uses the perspective of cognitive linguistics to examine aspects of conceptualization seen in idiomatic expressions of Korean related to food, clothing, and shelter. After investigating the concept and function of idiomatic expressions, the study uses cognitive linguistics to examine conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy. For this study, the author extracted a list of idiomatic Korean expressions related to food, clothing, and shelter and explored the aspects of conceptualization found in them. The results were as follows. First, idiomatic Korean expressions related to food, clothing, and shelter were synchronized by conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy. Second, the vocabulary related to food, clothing, and shelter in idiomatic Korean expressions represents not only human behavior, emotion, and attitude but also work, society, and economy. Third, expressions about dietary life were the most frequent among the idiomatic Korean expressions related to food, clothing, and shelter, indicating that Koreans most prioritize eating, which is directly linked to human survival. This study is valuable because it shows the aspects of conceptualization in idiomatic Korean expressions related to food, clothing, and shelter and can help in understanding Korean people’s way of thinking.
