Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze how Leonard Bernstein transformed the rhythm patterns of popular music in the musical “West Side Story”, and to find out how such musical transformation contribute to character building and dramatic enhancement in the musical work. This study was conducted with the literature research on previous studies and the musical analysis of the musical “West Side Story” OST. In particular, the number ‘Jet Song’ and ‘America’, which symbolize the two hostile groups, were analyzed on the rhythmic side. Through this study, we were able to confirm that the artistic achievement of musical works depends on a creative spirit that does not hesitate to make experimental changes to existing art forms to build characters and strengthen narratives.
