Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the features and functions of Jangsanbeom and Changgwi stories and reexamine the present value and meaning of these stories by focusing on the webtoons and pop songs made from the original narratives. Jangsanbeom and Changgwi stories are similar in that they depict the possibility that the subject may be deceived by an object making a certain sound. Therefore it can be said that these two stories both contain the anxiety of the subject. For this reason, the Jangsanbeom story might have been formed in a relationship with the Changgwi story although there exists a centuries of time gap between these stories. These two stories were recreated as webtoons in 2013 and pop songs in 2021. Webtoon Jangsanbeom and Changgwi, adopting the basic story settings of the original narratives, strengthened and expanded the meaning of each story by changing the structure and content especially following the grammar of the horror genre. Pop song Jangsanbeom and Changgwi fundamentally changed the original narratives by setting Jangsanbeom and Changgwi as poetic narrators. In this way, these contents tell us about underlying issues behind the depicted events or suggest a contemporary, completely new perspective, not directly addressed in the original narratives.
