Abstract

This study aims to investigate the new characteristics of transnational capital's labor control in the process of compliance management practices in China's pharmaceutical industry and the resistance to the control by the local workers. The mechanisms of practicing compliance management mainly involve three aspects: internal monitoring and auditing, compliance training and education, disciplinary punishment. Compliance management as a new disciplinary power is exercised through three technologies: hierarchical observation, normalizing judgment, and examination. We reveal that the compliance management practices in China do not conform to the rational hypothesis pursued by the West, and it is more of a bluff management strategy in nature, which is more concern to the profits rather than discipline and punishment.
