Abstract

This study analyzes the effects of a gardening-based group counseling program on social skills in the intellectually disabled. To this end, this researcher selected 13 intellectually disabled people aged 20 to 22 from a special school located in B City as an experimental group and 13 students from a special school in C City as a control group. The group counseling program was operated through nine sessions to collect data. According to the results of analysis, cooperation, self-assertion, and self-control which are the subareas of social skills of the experimental group have been found to be improved. Also, according to the results of qualitative analysis, in intellectually disabled people who participated in the program, ‘improvement in self-understanding through cooperation’, ‘improvement in understanding others through careful listening’, ‘improvement in self-assertion in conflict situations’, ‘reduction in anxiety about getting a job’, and ‘improvement in the capability of emotional acceptance’ have been observed.
