Abstract

This paper examines Media Helden, an adolescent cyberbullying prevention program in Germany, as a solution to increasingly serious adolescent cyberbullying. The goal of the Media Helden program is to lead to reduction of victims and perpetrators as well as prevention of cyberbullying through empathy enhancement. Through role-playing, students practice and train their empathy skills by focusing on their actions and their changes as bystanders, rather than focusing only on the role of perpetrator-victim in a cyberbullying situation. Adolescent cyberbullying is not an individual problem, but occurs when social power is misused in social relationships. It is hoped that this program will spread awareness that cyberspace is also a social space with ethics and rules, and become a solution to prevent cyberbullying among adolescent.
