Selfitis Behaviour as Predictor of Psychological Distress among Students of Dhaka City

Selfie is an interesting self-portrait phenomenon that has changed young people's communication and leisure time. Instead of living in the present moment, people are busy clicking selfies and uploading them on social media, adversely impacting their psychological health. Thus, the present study was designed to explore the impact of selfitis behavior on psychological distress among students at various educational levels (i.e., schools, colleges, and universities). Data were collected purposively from 400 participants at different educational institutions situated in Dhaka city. A package of Bangla-adapted versions (Zaman and Konica, 2019) of measuring tools (i.e., selfitis behavior scale and psychological distress scale) and a personal information form were used to collect the necessary information regarding the study. Results revealed that selfitis behavior was positively correlated with psychological distress. The individual effect of selfitis behavior construct identified two significant predictors (i.e., environmental enhancement and attention seeking), which jointly explained 12.6% of the variance in psychological distress. Here, the strongest predictor of psychological distress was attention-seeking, which alone explained 10.3% of the variance in psychological distress. Further, results also revealed that the three significant demographic predictors (i.e., socioeconomic status, daily selfie-taking, and educational qualification) jointly explained 16.1% of the variance in psychological distress. These results suggest valuable insights for researchers, educators, and educational counselors dealing with these concerns. Additionally, the findings would aid psychologists, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders in comprehending the factors contributing to psychological distress. Hate speech and cancellation phenomena and the impacts on young people's communication in digital environments.

The ICT Domicílios 2021 survey reveals the growth in the use of the internet in Brazil compared to periods prior to the Covid 19 pandemic. However, this expansion is not reflected in the percentages of selfauthored content posted by users: only 31% reported that they share something of their own creation, be it a text, image, photo, video or music. Among young people from Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) who are interested in politics, Silva's research (2022) revealed that only 34% claim to publish authorial content. Among the reasons given by young people, they mention fear of cancellation and hate speech. This article analyzes data from this survey in the light of discussions on infocommunicative literacy. We conclude that public policies in the country need to advance in terms of guaranteeing the right to the internet associated with education for the ethical, critical and democratic use of information and communication.

Identifying protective and risk behavior patterns of online communication in young people.

Research has investigated the association between time spent online and mental well-being, however the nuances between specific online behaviors and well-being have been less explored. This research examines how specific online behaviors (i.e., how young people are engaging online and with whom), are associated with one another, and how these patterns of behaviors are related to well-being. We used the November 2020 and March 2021 Understanding Society COVID-19 Panel data. The sample consisted of 1432 adolescents aged 10-15 years, who participated in November 2020. Latent class analysis was used to explore patterns of online behaviors. We also investigated how sociodemographic characteristics differed across the classes, along with physical, social, and mental well-being as distal outcomes both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. We identified four classes: "Avid users,""Scholars,""Midways,"and the "Passengers."The avid users had the highest frequency of posting online content regularly, likewise the scholars also posted online content regularly, however the scholars were differentiated by their higher frequency of schoolwork and news intake online. The midways had more complex activity characterized by talking to friends often and having a social media account, but posted online content less frequently. The passengers were the least active online as they posted pictures and videos less (76% said "never") and only 63% had a social media account. The avid users had the lowest well-being cross-sectionally and longitudinally, and the midways had lower social well-being and appearance dissatisfaction. Online behaviors such as regularly posting or talking to internet-only friends could be related to lower well-being. Policymakers should consider both improving regulations online and building an evidence base to enable caregivers from all backgrounds to support young people.

Use of Social Media Among Youth: The Reflection of Structuration Theory

The research reveals the views of youngsters on the usage of social media. The use of social media by youngsters has grown in popularity in contemporary society. The study performed a targeted questionnaire survey with high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from various public and private educational institutions to better understand the role that social media platforms play in the lives of young people and how they utilize them. Anthony Giddens' structuration theory, which stresses the effect of social systems on individual behavior, served as the study's theoretical foundation. The study's findings revealed that individual agency (young people's interests and motives for using social media) and structures (such as accessible platforms and the laws and norms regulating their usage) shape and impact each other in the use of social media by youth. Young people must be informed of the possible advantages and hazards of social media and utilize it properly. We expect that this research will add to a better understanding of the influence of social media on young people's communication, relationships, and general well-being.

Using therapy outcome measures to identify the speech and language therapy needs of children and young people with severe acquired brain injury

Background/Aims Children and young people often require speech and language therapy input following severe acquired brain injury. However, there is limited understanding of the impact of post-acute neurorehabilitation on children and young people's communication and swallowing, and how to measure this. The aim of this study was to evaluate the initial and ongoing speech and language therapy needs of children and young people in one specialist paediatric neurorehabilitation centre, and to determine the usefulness of therapy outcome measures for this population. Methods A retrospective review was performed of routinely collected data, including therapy outcome measures for children and young people admitted to the centre. Descriptive analysis was completed for all therapy outcome measures data, and statistical significance of change during rehabilitation was determined on those with sufficient data using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results A total of 165 records of children and young people aged between 1 and 17 years were reviewed. The average length of stay at the centre was 19.7 weeks. The most prevalent therapy outcome measures were cognition and dysphagia. Highly significant differences were found between admission and discharge in all therapy outcome measures scores, including participation (Wilcoxon Z=-9.523, P<0.001) and wellbeing (Wilcoxon Z=-7.656, P<0.001). Median discharge scores did not exceed 4 (from a maximum of 5) for any scales. Conclusions Therapy outcome measures were able to capture the complex profiles of these children and young people and could measure changes during post-acute neurorehabilitation. Children and young people presented with a range of speech and language therapy needs following severe acquired brain injury. They made significant improvements in impairment, activity, participation and wellbeing scales during rehabilitation. Children and young people left with ongoing speech and language therapy needs in all areas, which require input from community services.

Assessment of Cyberostracism and Personality Inventory In First Year University Students In Turkey

Abstract Background Being ignored, one of the most common problems among young people, can occur not only in face-to-face communication but also through social media communication tools over the internet and is called cyberostracism (CO). The effects of cyberostracism on people are at least as effective as in real social life and can cause a wide variety of affective disorders. It is thought that the family, environmental factors and the individual's own personality traits effectively control such negative emotions. This study aims to evaluate the CO level and personality types of students who have just started university in Turkey. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 spring semester and 3148 students in the first year of their university in Turkey constituted the study group. To evaluate the CO levels of the students, CO Scale (min-max score 14-70) and to evaluate the personality type, Ten Item-Personality Inventory (TIPI) was used. The questionnaire prepared in accordance with literature was filled out online by the students. Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis analyses and Multiple Linear Regression was used. Results In the study, 1847 (62.5%) were female and the mean age was 19.9±1.8 years. The mean score obtained from the CO scale was 21.1±8.1; 41.8% of the participants had the Agreeableness personality type. Male gender, extended family, not good at face-to-face communication with friends, creating a membership by hiding their identity in social media and being ignored in social media were predictive for CO (F: 69.176, R2: 0.172, p < 0.001) was shown in multiple linear regression. Conclusions Distance education programs during the pandemic period have limited the face-to-face communication of young people, causing them to spend more time in cyberspace. Personality type has been an important factor affecting the level of cyberostracism by determining our behaviour when exposed to difficult life events. Key messages

Modern Society Challenges: Youth Communication in Instagram

With the emergence and further development of network communication, the number of participants in this process began to increase. The youth turned out to be especially receptive and open to such modern manifestations of communication. It is the youth who actively and easily joins the use of social networks in their lives, where they mainly work. The article is devoted to the consideration of the main theoretical and research approaches to the problem of modern challenges of society - communication of young people on Instagram. The authors noted that one of the main signs of the development of modern society is the rapid formation of computer information technologies, which gives a modern person an opportunity to study, discuss problems that bother him, meet new people and communicate with friends, use the unlimited possibilities of the Internet. One of such information media is the social youth network - Instagram, which can be called one of the best, most convenient and interesting. The article notes that it is young people who master network communication better and use it more often than other age groups, because they are at the forefront of new transformations, and therefore the study of their communicative practices seems to be the most significant and promising.

Deviations in Online Communications in the Sphere of Youth Education

The transition of the Russian education system in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic to online platforms marked the emergence of new practices of interpersonal communication in the teacher-student relationship system. The article deals with deviant manifestations in the online space of communications. The analysis is based on the study of semantic deviations constructed by young people in the process of communication in a changing reality. The starting point of deviations is considered as a departure from the approved norms of communication in educational system, which leads to such phenomena as trolling, gaming, etc. The influence of virtualization of education on the rethinking of the norms and practices of communication by young people is considered, and the educational space itself, due to its greater openness, becomes a platform for the implementation of these deviant practices. Analysis of the data obtained during sociological research shows the nature of the differentiation of meanings in the field of online communication of young people, which is reflected in the education system.

Associations between ethnicity, place of residence, hearing status of family and habilitation of children with hearing impairment

BackgroundHearing parents tend to have a strong preference for their deaf and hard-of-hearing children to acquire adequate speech, as opposed to use of sign language. Research reports the contribution of many variables to speech acquisition by children with hearing loss (HL). Yet, little is known about the association between ethnicity, place of residence, and hearing status of family members and mode of communication of young people with HL. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether mode of communication of young people with HL is associated with ethnicity, place of residence, and hearing status of family members.MethodParticipants were young adults with sensory-neural severe to profound HL, either congenital or acquired prior to age 3. Only participants without additional disabilities were included. The data on participants were extracted from records of the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Social Services in Israel. The data for each participant in the study included mode of communication, gender, use of assistive device, ethnicity, geographic place of residence, and presence of first-degree relatives with HL. Regarding participants with a cochlear implant (CI), age at implantation was documented as well.ResultsChi-square tests revealed significant associations between mode of communication and all of the study variables. In addition, all the study variables made a significant contribution to mode of communication. Regarding ethnicity, most of the ultra-Orthodox participants used oral language, while the majority of Israeli-Arab participants used sign language. Regarding geographical place of residence, lower rates of oral language use were found in the northern and southern districts of Israel.ConclusionsThe findings of the present study underline the need for better monitoring of Israeli-Arab children with HL and children residing in peripheral areas in Israel and for improving access to habilitation services.

РОЗВИТОК КОМУНІКАТИВНОЇ КОМПЕТЕНТНОСТІУ СТУДЕНТІВ ЗАСОБАМИ ПСИХОЛОГІЧНОГО ТРЕНІНГУ

The article presents the theoretical substantiation of the psycholinguistic category communicative competence, which is one of the main professionally important qualities of forming the personality of a future specialist psychologist. Mental reality and speech communication of modern students are mediated by new ways of perceiving information that determine a new type of communicative behavior of its carriers. Based on the analysis of authoritative sources it is found out that the virtual communication space as a whole and the active use of the Internet in particular significantly affect the features of communicatively mediated communication of young people, deforming its verbal component. The purpose of the article is to theoretically substantiate and empirically study the development of communicative competence of future psychologists by means of psychological training. The study used a set of methods, namely theoretical analysis of works devoted to virtual discourse in scientific publications of the last two decades. Also, in order to study the effectiveness of the developed training program, a number of empirical methods were applied – observation, experiment, testing, method of studying products of activity, method of expert evaluation. Results. In order to develop communicative competence, the psychological training “Formation of Communicative Competence” was developed and implemented in the educational process. The algorithm for designing and applying assignments for lessons is characterized. The study was attended by 107 respondents, who form 4 academic groups of students of 1 and 2 courses of the Kiev National Trade and Economic University specializing in psychology. To test the effectiveness of training the development of communicative competence of students in control groups, the method “Diagnosis of communicative setting V.V. Boyko” and the methodology “Diagnosis of communicative social competence (CSC)”. The results obtained were processed using statistical methods. Conclusions. The effectiveness of the influence of psychological training “Formation of communicative competence” on the development of personality-oriented speech communication of active Internet users has been proved, which as a whole is a predictor of more effective communication strategies. The prospect of further research with the involvement of students of other professional fields (future philologists, managers), as well as the study of gender differences in virtual communication and their influence on the mental development of the individual, are offered.

Discursive construction of semiotic models of intercultural communication in terms of borderlands studies: a theoretical conceptualization

The article deals with the semiotic communication models in terms of an substantial scientific basis of sociological analysis of adolescent’s intercultural interaction at the borderlands area. The structure and features of verbal aspects of communicative interaction are revealed. Some communication models are emphasized taking into account the fact that they provide the greatest epistemological potential to explain the interaction of different types of cultures in modern social and cultural circumstances. The dynamics of the construction of semiotic communication models and their theoretical conceptualization have been investigated, in particular, the models of K. Biuller, R. Yakobson, Y. Lotman, S. Paulsen, U. Eko are revealed. The possibilities and limitations of above mentioned models use within the studies of intercultural communication, in particular the epistemological ability of each one models to explain the practices of intercultural interaction of youth groups at the borderlands, are investigated. It is emphasized that K. Biuller's model has the epistemological potential of explaining the processes of intercultural communication at the microlevel and partly at the, mesolevel of social structure, while R. Yakobson's model best reveals the linguistic aspects of intercultural dialogue and understanding. The conceptual vision of the semiotics of intercultural interaction, presented in Y. Lotman's model, is also of special interest in the context of explaining linguistic aspects, but, in our opinion, it practically does not reveal the sociocultural aspects of intercultural communication. It is emphasized that U. Eko's semiotic model of communication has perhaps the most powerful heuristic potential for analyzing the issues chosen by the author (the studies of intercultural interaction of young people at the borderlands), as it reveals the mechanisms of production and dissemination of untruths in communication processes as a component of the communication model, reveals the dimensions of the transformation of the content of the message in the process of its translation from sender to receiver. It is concluded that certain elements of all analyzed models can be epistemologically useful tools for analyzing the processes of intercultural communication of young people at the borderlands, however in terms of the epistemological use the most optimal are semiotic model of communication U. Eko and some statements of R. Yakobson's theory.

In recent decades there have been many disputes about the viability of Russian education. Supporters of radical changes argue that it is ineffective in the new conditions of the global transition to digital. Schools and universities are intimidated by a generation of “zetas” who “do not succumb” to standard approaches, spending most of their free time online, with clip thinking, inability to concentrate for a long time, and other difficulties and peculiarities. Opponents of digitalization are trying to protect teenagers from unlimited use of gadgets. There are discussions about how to use digital devices wisely and without harming their health. In the spring of 2020 the situation develops in such a way that the “harm” from the long-term communication of young people with gadgets becomes incomparable with the possibility of stopping the learning process. Educational institutions are urgently moving to work in a remote format. In the course of this situation, this is the only way out. The transition reveals many problems that, if possible, are solved during the process. It becomes obvious that it is impossible to use distance learning as the only possible format of work. What the future will be like depends on many factors. Will it remain universal with a sign of quality of traditional Russian education or will it undergo a radical transformation? Employers rely on creative employees who are efficient in multitasking and capable of continuous self-education throughout their lives. The concept of life-long learning continues to be a trend, without giving up its positions. The purpose of this article is to find out whether the new generation of young people is so different that all approaches of the traditional education system are broken down about their “armor”. Or under the flag of Generation Z the idea of a radical transition to a completely new education is being promoted.

“You sure there's nothing more to say?”: Indonesian Youth Culture Represented in YouTube Video Advertisements

Local identity, to some extent, has been influenced by globalization, mainly through the new media. As a form of digital media, YouTube video advertisements play a crucial part in promoting global products to the locals. In Indonesia, the majority of YouTube visitors are young people; thus, young people have become the main targets of the advertisements. The video advertisements may contain representation, values or references of youth culture, which are critical for young people in building their identity. This paper sets forth to explore Indonesian YouTube advertisements of LINE, an instant messaging (IM) application developed by Naver Korean company. The authors examine LINE YouTube video advertisements using textual analysis, in order to learn the portrayal of Indonesian youth culture on the videos. Digital media, bahasa gaul, and traditional or dominant cultures, as well as social connectivity, are essential for Indonesian youths in shaping youth culture and their identity. The title of this paper “You sure there’s nothing more to say?” is taken from one of the dialogues in the videos, which implies that youth culture and identity portrayed in the advertisements appreciate face-to-face social communication of young people more than individualization. It is also argued that if used aptly, YouTube video advertisements could contribute effectively to preserving local identity as a strategy of glocalization; thus, not all advertisements of global corporations may threat local identity.

QUESTIONS OF PSYCHOLINGUISTIC STUDY OF THE MOTIVES OF EXTREMIST SPEECH BEHAVIOR OF YOUNG PEOPLE ON SOCIAL NETWORKS

The article analyzes the issues of motivation of extremist behavior of users of social networks; the main theme is the communication of young people on social networks and their preferences in the choice of means of communication. The article talks about the importance of studying and differential approach to the issue, as the formation of speech structures of utterances, the creation of non-verbal messages, context and content are influenced by the characteristics of youth. In this regard, the main important socio-psychological characteristics of the young age and the problems of its boundaries are identified. The methodology is determined by the subject and the focus of the study. First of all, the personality was studied in the media coordinates, so the research was carried out within the framework of socio-psychological methods and techniques, as well as media research. The authors have undertaken primary training monitoring of social networks within the framework of expert activity of St. Petersburg state University and have revealed those pages and links on which aggressive-destructive texts, speech threats and information of extremist orientation are most often found. The study uses the comparative analysis of texts, the method of “observation” and intent analysis, and the data from some open sources of operational services on detection of extremism. Intent analysis has become the main method in the study of the effects on the individual, and elements of content analysis of media texts (text, image, video, creolized texts) have also been involved. On the basis of their own research, the authors of the article have made an attempt to work out a strategic plan of work to identify extremism and outline the main modern strategies of anti-extremism at the intersection of linguistics and psychology. Studies have shown that a special role in the prevention of extremism is given to media resources, and specifically to mass media.

Selective sharing: The impact of patterns of communication in young people experiencing maternal cancer.

Adolescents that experience parental cancer can have significant difficulties and may be at a greater risk of emotional and behavioural problems; however, some studies have found that this experience can also be empowering and can promote positive growth. Open communication specifically has been associated with coping and less psychological distress in adolescents experiencing parental cancer. The aim of this study is to identify communication patterns in adolescents that faced maternal cancer to provide recommendations for practice on how best to support adolescents at this challenging time. Adolescents (n=15) completed semistructured interviews with the main researcher to explore their experiences at the time of maternal cancer. Specifically, this study is a qualitative secondary thematic analysis. The term "selective sharing" was coined to characterise adolescent communication patterns, as they selected who they wished to talk to and how much information about maternal illness they shared. Barriers for adolescent open communication included perceived unavailability of their mothers to talk, fear, geographical separation from their families, previous family communication patterns, and the time since maternal diagnosis. Benefits of open communication included access to affection, support and information, as well as validation of their emotions and improved coping. Adolescents also provided recommendations to peers and practitioners based on their own experiences. Adolescent communication patterns need to be evaluated as this can impact on their ability to cope with maternal cancer diagnosis. Practitioners can facilitate and encourage open communication, including both factual information about cancer and the emotions and thoughts adhered to this experience for adolescents, mothers, friends, and their families to support them at this challenging time.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the young people communication activities and purposes in coffee shops in Banda Aceh. The objectives of this study were to investigate why young people either male or female (in Banda Aceh) hang out at coffee shops and what they are doing there.
 The method employs in this study are quantitative in nature. The survey is used to collect the data needed for this study. A set of the questionnaire is distributed to 1,500 young people who were hanging out in coffee shops in Banda Aceh. The data collected were analyzed through SPSS in the form of percentages. 
 The results showed that the main reasons for hanging out in the coffee shops, apart from drinking coffee, were to chat with friends, look for entertainment and fill in time. The main form of communication was small talk and amusement. At the same time, those who talked about their studies did not get satisfaction. These young people also usually used the internet while they were in the coffee shops – to play games, chat with (other) friends and also to get materials for study.
 Limitations of this study were that only questionnaire was used to get the data. As a matter of fact, the interview should be done to get the detail data. However, this study has given valuable information for readers in general in relation to the activities and purposes of hanging out at the coffee shops among young people in Aceh.
 This study has never been done before especially in Aceh. This study also provided current information on what communication activities and purposes of young people in coffee shops in Aceh.

“Click for Support” – Guidelines for Effective Web-Based Interventions for Young People in Selective Drug Prevention

Abstract. Objective: New technologies and modern media play an important role in the daily life and communication of young people. The objective of the EU-funded project “Click for Support” is to develop a guideline for effective web-based interventions for young people in the field of selective drug prevention, with a special focus on illicit drugs and new psychoactive substances. The target group is young drug consumers between 14 and 21 years. A second objective is to promote the application of new technologies like social networks by prevention professionals. Method: The project is divided in two main parts: The first phase includes research on web-based interventions and assessment workshops with the target group, and the second phase consists of actual guideline development, based on the previously gained results and knowledge. A Delphi study serves to determine recommendations and statements that were discussed ambiguously. Conclusion: Following completion of the first project phase we now have a large amount of information and knowledge concerning the current supply of web-based interventions in many European countries as well as important elements and aspects the offers should include – and most importantly, the preferences and needs of the target group. Based on this knowledge we plan to develop the guideline during the next project phase. We will use a Delphi study to discuss uncertain aspects together with a panel of experts in two rounds. The final guideline will be available in July 2015 and will be translated into ten different languages.
