The Macro and Micro Structure of the Foreign Language Curriculum

AT PRESENT the majority of experts seems to be in agreement on the general nature and content of the Foreign Language Curriculum in the secondary school. Thus while the following description and discussion of the Foreign Language Curriculum is based on the bulletin French for Secondary Schools (Bureau of Secondary Curriculum Development, New York State Education Department), other state bulletins or documents1 could have been used without coming to significantly different conclusions.

New title VII reports, with proposals for better research

The author of this review is consultant on Educational Communications in the New York State Education Department. At one time a research fellow with the Instructional Film Research Program at the Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Twyford later was project officer for the program that the U. S. Naval Training Device Center sponsored. As an engineer, psychologist, and educator, he is a well-equipped student of the new technological aids to education.

A transmission design for closed circuit educational television

Over the past few years the New York State Education Department has conducted a number of experiments using TV (television) as a means of communication between teachers and pupils. The most recent endeavor in this series is a closed circuit educational TV system in Cortland County, N. Y. The primary objective is to determine the effectiveness of elementary and high school teaching via TV. The purpose of this paper is to describe a portion of the project involving the New York Telephone Company, namely, the transmission of video and audio signals from the point of origination to the schools where the information is presented to the pupils.

Use of Standardized Tests of Mathematics in New York State Secondary Schools

Probably the question asked most frequently of the New York State Education Department's test advisory service is: “What standardized tests are the other schools using and how well satisfied are they with their results?” To obtain a cross-sectional picture of actual practice in the state with respect to the use of standardized tests of mathematics, questionnaires were sent in the fall of 1951 to the approximately 1,300 schools of secondary grade (grades 7-12) in the state. The chairman of the mathematics department or the teacher in charge of mathematics in each school was asked to indicate the standardized tests of mathematics administered in the school during the 1950-1951 school year, the reason for using the tests, and his evaluation of the tests. Such information promises to be helpful to mathematics teachers in deriving suggestions for the evaluation and improvement of their own testing programs.

Educational Research in the New York State Education Department

As a distinct function separate from administration and supervision, educational research in the New York State Education Department had its beginning in 1920 with the appointment of a specialist in educational measurements. In 1923, the Commissioner merged the Mental Hygiene Bureau of the Department with the work in educational measurement, cre ating the Bureau of Educational Measurements. In 1928, the Board of Regents voted to create an Educational Research Division and the following year, on the Commissioner's recommendation, the Bureau of Educational Measurements became the Division of Educational Research.
