Reconciling Academic Approaches and Industrial Realities: Lessons from Fault Diagnosis Applications

This paper reviews lessons learned from over fifteen years of industrial experience with fault diagnosis and process supervision. While a significant body of academic literature exists on methodologies for fault diagnosis, there exists a striking gap between academic approaches and industrial requirements. Reasons for this gap include availability of sensor measurements, accessibility to experts, non-availability of knowledge in the form of heuristics or models, complicated process dynamics, knowledge validation, exclusive dependence on a single methodology, inadequate software tools, difficulties in implementation, human factors, etc. The challenges in application of fault diagnosis to industrial situations will be illustrated using several examples with primary focus on the FALCON project.

The Anaflux process, an upflow anaerobic fluidized bed reactor using a mineral bacterial support, has been employed industrially for ten years treating a variety of food-processing and paper industry wastewaters. This paper describes five aspects of the design and operation of the anaerobic fluidized bed which have proven, from industrial experience, to be essential. The optimization of these factors enables a stable functioning of the process and allows the application of high loading rates. Included are the results of a semi-industrial pilot study, treating wine distillation wastewaters, which demonstrate the present capabilities (OLR=70 kg COD/m3·d) of this type of reactor.

Evaluation of ignition mechanisms for aluminium trays and packing in the low-pressure column of air separation units

Experimental work has shown that trays and packing fabricated from aluminium are flammable under certain conditions normally encountered in oxygen distillation columns. Therefore, the safety of trays and packing depends entirely on the exclusion of ignition mechanisms. This paper presents an evaluation of ignition mechanisms with respect to their relevance to the adiabatic section of the column. The combustion of hydrocarbons has been identified as the only realistic ignition mechanism. Therefore, most of the experiments described in the paper refer to this mechanism. It is shown that the combustion of an oil film on packing (approximately 5 g m −2 ) is not able to ignite aluminium packing, but that accumulated oil (a few grams) is able to ignite aluminium trays and packing as well as copper packing. This result stresses the importance of controlling any hydrocarbon accumulation. A short review of accumulation mechanisms for lubrication oil from fabrication and hydrocarbons from air shows that accumulation within the adiabatic section of the distillation column is practically impossible. Finally, it is concluded that no ignition sources for aluminium trays and packing are present in the low-pressure column of oxygen distillation columns. This explains the very good safety record of aluminium trays for more than 30 years of industrial experience characterized by no single case of tray combustion. Aluminium packing, now in operation for more than five years, can be expected to be as safe as trays.

Life tests and field results of GaAs FETs

The overall workplan for assuring the reliability of GaAs MESFETS is presented, as a result of 10 years of industrial experience. The importance of an accurate evaluation of failure mechanisms and acceleration fac-tors is pointed out, describing problems and criticalities related to the reliability testing and the failure analy-sis of this kind of devices. Finally, field data coming from our dynamic data base for system monitoring and surveillance are presented and discussed, demonstrating the satisfactory level of field reliability achieved during last years.

He joined the Department of Computing Science of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 1984, where he is now an Assistant Professor of computing sceince. He also has six years of industrial experience, working for various public and private enterprises and UNIDO projects in Turkey as well as U.S. Dr Ozsu has consulted and conducted seminars in Canada, U.S., Turkey and Mexico for various provincial and federal governments, universities and professional societies. He has organized sessions on distributed databases at international conferences and has served as the Program Committee Chairman of the CIPS Edmonton '87 computer conference. His current research interests are in distributed database systems, distributed operating systems, performance evaluation, Petri net modeling and knowledge-bases. He is the author of a book. A priority for worker health and safety: Lessons from the British coal mines

Since the mid-1970s occupational health and safety has become a bandwagon attracting a politically diverse audience. The problems are not new; what is new is a rekindled awareness that more than 150 years of industrial experience has yet to ensure for workers a momentum toward, little less the realization of, humanistically acceptable conditions of labor. What is needed is a fundamental reconception of production priorities [61]. That, in turn, bespeaks basic changes in both productive structures and the ideology informing them. How that struggle is to be waged is a policy debate of utmost importance. Strategies short of revolution have emphasized the role of law, the role of unions, and the role of state ownership. British coal miners perceived an improvement in their working environment as the consequences of a struggle launched on all three of these fronts. Their story, however, also highlights the obstacles confronting such a struggle and it begs us to remember the international context in which future strategies must be devised.

Mr. E. G. Godfrey died after a sudden heart attack on December 2, 1958, at the age of 51. Eric Godfrey obtained his degree in physics at Kings College, London, after studying under Prof. E. V. Appleton as he then was. After some ten years of industrial experience in telephone laboratories and works, he entered technical teaching service at the Woolwich Polytechnic.

Student Self-government

AFTER almost thirty years of experience in industry I have ~~spent the past five years in a professional capacity on a university campus. Naturally, I have come across many matters in which university practice differs greatly from industrial practice. There are many things which they do better in industry than in academic circles and, of course, there are others in which the advantage belongs to the university. One of the problems facing our educators, namely, that of discipline of the students, has been solved much more satisfactorily by industry. Paternalism, or perhaps more accurately paternalism, has spread greatly in our universities much to the detriment of the student's independence of thought and of life. We see, and we are quite accustomed to the sight, men of mature years being disciplined in such matters as the hours of dancing, the location of the dance, the number of committees for the dance and what not-all matters on which the student might be expected to have a will of his own. If he has, he is not allowed to exercise it. He is told what rooms are suitable for him, he is told what hours he shall keep. His amusements, in some instances, are prescribed for him. He is restricted in his smoking, and in the use of his automobile. There are few personal activities that are not dominated by the university authorities. If our student wants to arrange a little battle between Freshmen and Sophomores, permission must be obtained from the university president. If he wants to initiate some pledges into his fraternity, the date is again set by the administration. A truly remarkable system of patriarchal government has grown up in our universities. Patriarchalism has vanished entirely from industry. It used to exist, and some traces of it can still be found, notably in England, but it has been found to be a poor policy leading to weak discipline. The old-time employer used to supervise his employees' affairs in work and out of work. He dictated by curfew bell when they should go to bed at night; he stipulated the amusements they should have, and the houses they should live in. Probably Henry Ford's supervisors of some fifteen years ago are the most recent examples of this type of paternalism in the United States. Workers naturally resented this supervision and expressed themselves so vigorously
