A Negative-Based TiO2 Electrode for Aqueous Proton Batteries

Complementary solutions to Li-ion batteries must be studied for the growing need for energy demand. Accordingly, we have been interested in developing negative electrode materials of TiO2 capable of reversibly intercalating proton ions for aqueous batteries. One of these batteries’ main challenges comes from the low potential window available. Aqueous batteries cannot provide sufficient energy density with a thermodynamic working potential of only 1.23V. To do so, we have optimized the intrinsic transport properties of proton-ions can lead to the reduction of side reactions such as Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER).Solvothermal route synthesis made at different temperatures (from 90°C to 150°C) gives access to different TiO2 structures. At 90°C, a lamellar type lepidocrocite is obtained, including sheets of “TiO2” and water in the inter-lamellar spaces. This inter-lamellar space allows proton conduction by the Grotthus mechanism [1]. But, lepidocrocite type TiO2has been shown to be a non-conductive ionic conductor. To make it conductive, different cations can be inserted into the inter-lamellar space during the solvothermal synthesis, thus allowing the reorganization of water molecules, then facilitating the intercalation, conduction, and diffusion of protons [2]. Several levels of Zn2+ were tested: from 10 to 50 mol% relative to Ti4 +. At 150°C, we have been able to stabilize a complete condensed anatase (one polymorph of TiO2) phase while a defect anatase phase has been synthesized at a temperature between 90°C and 150°C. Interestingly, the quantity of defect can be tuned by the temperature and the hydrolysis ratio, h=nH2O/nTi=3.33 [3]. These defects are mainly cationic vacancies, thanks to X-Ray Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis.The electrochemical properties of these materials (shaped with carbon black as conductive support and Nafion as a binder) were studied in half-cell aqueous electrolyte buffered at pH 5 (CH3COOH/CH3COOK, pKa = 4.76, (1M)). Experimental capacities of more than 100 mAh/g, 80% of coulombic efficiency over 100 cycles have been obtained and potentials down to -1.4V (V vs Ag/AgCl, KCl saturated) have been achieved.For defective anatase (synthesized at 110°C), the CV curves exhibit two distinct peaks that can be linked to the co-existence of two sites for proton intercalation. The proton can be intercalated either inside a vacancy or within the lattice. This behavior allows a promising working potential of -1.6V with a gravimetric capacity of 250 mAh.g-1 with a 90% of efficiency over 50 cycles. Finally, the relationship between structure and electrochemical properties will be discussed in this presentation with the objective of designing an efficient MnO2/TiO2 aqueous battery.REFERENCE:[1] Wu, X.; Hong, J. Structure and Ionic Conductivity of Li-Disordered Bismuth o-Thiophosphate Li60-3xBi16+x(PS4)36.

The structure of the first lithium-containing bismuth ortho (o)-thiophosphate was determined using a combination of powder X-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction. Li60-3xBi16+x(PS4)36 with x in the range of 4.1-6.5 possesses a complex monoclinic structure [space group C2/c (No. 15)] and a large unit cell with the lattice parameters a = 15.4866 Å, b = 10.3232 Å, c = 33.8046 Å, and β = 85.395° for Li44.4Bi21.2(PS4)36, in agreement with the structure as observed by X-ray and neutron pair distribution function analysis. The disordered distribution of lithium ions within the interstices of the dense host structure and the Li ion dynamics and diffusion pathways have been investigated by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, pulsed field gradient NMR diffusion measurements, and bond valence sum calculations. The total lithium ion conductivities range from 2.6 × 10-7 to 2.8 × 10-6 S cm-1 at 20 °C with activation energies between 0.29 and 0.32 eV, depending on the bismuth content. Despite the highly disordered nature of lithium ions in Li60-3xBi16+x(PS4)36, the underlying dense host framework appears to limit the dimensionality of the lithium diffusion pathways and emphasizes once more the necessity of a close inspection of the structure-property relationships in solid electrolytes.

Exploring the impact of incoherent Compton scattering on X-ray pair distribution function analysis of disordered materials

X-ray atomic pair distribution function (XPDF) measurements using a two-dimensional area detector have been of great value in studying atomic structures of materials with varying degrees of disorder. However, an area detector does not have energy resolution. Thus, incoherent inelastic Compton scattering and fluorescence are not discriminated, contaminating coherent elastic scattering. This paper investigates the effects of random noise from incoherent scattering on XPDF analysis. To conduct the study, the elastic scattering, Compton scattering and fluorescence of In0.33Ga0.67As alloy were separately measured using an intrinsic Ge solid-state detector with energy resolution. It is found that the addition of Compton scattering with a noise-to-signal ratio of about 0.8% results in the smearing of diffuse scattering in the high-Q region. Moreover, adding extra noise from fluorescence increases the smearing, overwhelming the diffuse scattering. Additionally, simulated data of elastic and Compton scattering on ferroelectric Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3 were used to investigate the evolution of noise fluctuation and its effects on the XPDF as a function of total intensity.

Phosphate-functionalized Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhancing Lithium-Sulfur Battery Cycling.

Lithium-sulfur batteries are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices due to their outstanding theoretical energy density. However, they suffer from low sulfur utilization and poor cyclability, greatly limiting their practical implementation. Herein, we adopted a phosphate-functionalized zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) as a sulfur host. With their porous structure, remarkable electrochemical stability, and synthetic versatility, Zr-MOFs present great potential in preventing soluble polysulfides from leaching. Phosphate groups were introduced to the framework post-synthetically since they have shown a strong affinity towards lithium polysulfides and an ability to facilitate Li ion transport. The successful incorporation of phosphate in MOF-808 was demonstrated by a series of techniques including infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X-ray pair distribution function analysis. When employed in batteries, phosphate-functionalized Zr-MOF (MOF-808-PO4) exhibits significantly enhanced sulfur utilization and ion diffusion compared to the parent framework, leading to higher capacity and rate capability. The improved capacity retention and inhibited self-discharge rate also demonstrate effective polysulfide encapsulation utilizing MOF-808-PO4. Furthermore, we explored their potential towards high-density batteries by examining the cycling performance at various sulfur loadings. Our approach to correlate structure with function using hybrid inorganic-organic materials offers new chemical design strategies for advancing battery materials.

Mapping nanocrystalline disorder within an amorphous metal–organic framework

Intentionally disordered metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) display rich functional behaviour. However, the characterisation of their atomic structures remains incredibly challenging. X-ray pair distribution function techniques have been pivotal in determining their average local structure but are largely insensitive to spatial variations in the structure. Fe-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) is a nanocomposite MOF, known for its catalytic properties, comprising crystalline nanoparticles and an amorphous matrix. Here, we use scanning electron diffraction to first map the crystalline and amorphous components to evaluate domain size and then to carry out electron pair distribution function analysis to probe the spatially separated atomic structure of the amorphous matrix. Further Bragg scattering analysis reveals systematic orientational disorder within Fe-BTC’s nanocrystallites, showing over 10° of continuous lattice rotation across single particles. Finally, we identify candidate unit cells for the crystalline component. These independent structural analyses quantify disorder in Fe-BTC at the critical length scale for engineering composite MOF materials.

Direct Synthesis of Ammonia from Nitrate on Amorphous Graphene with Near 100% Efficiency.

Ammonia is an indispensable commodity in the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. Direct nitrate-to-ammonia electroreduction is a decentralized route yet challenged by competing side reactions. Most catalysts are metal-based, and metal-free catalysts with high nitrate-to-ammonia conversion activity are rarely reported. Herein, it is shown that amorphous graphene synthesized by laser induction and comprising strained and disordered pentagons, hexagons, and heptagons can electrocatalyze the eight-electron reduction of NO3 - to NH3 with a Faradaic efficiency of ≈100% and an ammonia production rate of 2859 µg cm-2 h-1 at -0.93 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. X-ray pair-distribution function analysis and electron microscopy reveal the unique molecular features of amorphous graphene that facilitate NO3 - reduction. In situ Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations establish the critical role of these features in stabilizing thereaction intermediates via structural relaxation. The enhanced catalytic activity enables the implementation of flow electrolysis for the on-demand synthesis and release of ammonia with >70% selectivity, resulting in significantly increased yields and survival rates when applied to plant cultivation. The results of this study show significant promise for remediating nitrate-polluted water and completing the NOx cycle.

An Amorphous Phase Precedes Crystallization: Unraveling the Colloidal Synthesis of Zirconium Oxide Nanocrystals.

One can nowadays readily generate monodisperse colloidal nanocrystals, but the underlying mechanism of nucleation and growth is still a matter of intense debate. Here, we combine X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the nucleation and growth of zirconia nanocrystals from zirconium chloride and zirconium isopropoxide at 340 °C, in the presence of surfactant (tri-n-octylphosphine oxide). Through E1 elimination, precursor conversion leads to the formation of small amorphous particles (less than 2 nm in diameter). Over the course of the reaction, the total particle concentration decreases while the concentration of nanocrystals stays constant after a sudden increase (nucleation). Kinetic modeling suggests that amorphous particles nucleate into nanocrystals through a second order process and they are also the source of nanocrystal growth. There is no evidence for a soluble monomer. The nonclassical nucleation is related to a precursor decomposition rate that is an order of magnitude higher than the observed crystallization rate. Using different zirconium precursors (e.g., ZrBr4 or Zr(OtBu)4), we can tune the precursor decomposition rate and thus control the nanocrystal size. We expect these findings to help researchers in the further development of colloidal syntheses.

Metavalent Bonding-Mediated Dual 6s2 Lone Pair Expression Leads to Intrinsic Lattice Shearing in n-Type TlBiSe2.

Metavalent bonding has attracted immense interest owing to its capacity to impart a distinct property portfolio to materials for advanced functionality. Coupling metavalent bonding to lone pair expression can be an innovative way to propagate lattice anharmonicity from lone pair-induced local symmetry-breaking via the soft p-bonding electrons to achieve long-range phonon dampening in crystalline solids. Motivated by the shared chemical design pool for topological quantum materials and thermoelectrics, we based our studies on a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator TlBiSe2 that held prospects for 6s2 dual-cation lone pair expression and metavalent bonding to investigate if the proposed hypothesis can deliver a novel thermoelectric material. Herein, we trace the inherent phononic origin of low thermal conductivity in n-type TlBiSe2 to dual 6s2 lone pair-induced intrinsic lattice shearing that strongly suppresses the lattice thermal conductivity to a low value of 1.1-0.4 Wm-1 K-1 between 300 and 715 K. Through synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function and first-principles studies, we have established that TlBiSe2 exists not in a monomorphous R-3m structure but as a distribution of distorted configurations. Via a cooperative movement of the constituent atoms akin to a transverse shearing mode facilitated by metavalent bonding in TlBiSe2, the structure shuttles between various energetically accessible low-symmetry structures. The orbital interactions and ensuing multicentric bonding visualized through Wannier functions augment the long-range transmission of atomic displacement effects in TlBiSe2. With additional point-defect scattering, a κlatt of 0.3 Wm-1 K-1 was achieved in TlBiSeS with a maximum n-type thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) of ∼0.8 at 715 K.

Vacancies Introduced during the Crystallization Process of the Glass-Ceramics Superionic Conductor, Na3PS4, Investigated by Neutron Total Scattering and Reverse Monte Carlo Method

Sodium solid electrolytes are expected to be safer and more durable than lithium solid electrolytes, which affect the properties of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries nearing commercialization. The heat treatment of Na3PS4 glass ceramics, a strong candidate for sodium solid electrolytes, results in ionic conductivity exceeding 10–4 S cm–1 at ambient temperature, depending on the heat-treatment conditions. First-principles calculations have suggested that vacancies at Na sites promote ionic conduction; however, the existence of vacancies has not been confirmed through a conventional average structure analysis of X-ray and neutron diffraction profiles or pair distribution functions. In this study, local structure analysis of Na3PS4 glass ceramics using reverse Monte Carlo modeling was performed on the pair distribution function obtained from neutron total scattering measurements during and after heat treatment to identify the vacancy locations that differ from the Na occupation sites. The vacancies in Na3PS4 glass ceramics after heat treatment revealed a more disordered atomic arrangement than Na, suggesting that the vacancies connecting Na occupation sites are most likely responsible for the promotion of Na ion conduction. The control of vacancies in solid electrolytes is essential for the design of practical all-solid-state sodium batteries.

Development of Dipeptide N-acetyl-L-cysteine Loaded Nanostructured Carriers Based on Inorganic Layered Hydroxides.

N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a derivative of the L-cysteine amino acid, presents antioxidant and mucolytic properties of pharmaceutical interest. This work reports the preparation of organic-inorganic nanophases aiming for the development of drug delivery systems based on NAC intercalation into layered double hydroxides (LDH) of zinc-aluminum (Zn2Al-NAC) and magnesium-aluminum (Mg2Al-NAC) compositions. A detailed characterization of the synthesized hybrid materials was performed, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, infrared and Raman spectroscopies, solid-state 13carbon and 27aluminum nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry coupled to mass spectrometry (TG/DSC-MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and elemental chemical analysis to assess both chemical composition and structure of the samples. The experimental conditions allowed to isolate Zn2Al-NAC nanomaterial with good crystallinity and a loading capacity of 27.3 (m/m)%. On the other hand, NAC intercalation was not successful into Mg2Al-LDH, being oxidized instead. In vitro drug delivery kinetic studies were performed using cylindrical tablets of Zn2Al-NAC in a simulated physiological solution (extracellular matrix) to investigate the release profile. After 96 h, the tablet was analyzed by micro-Raman spectroscopy. NAC was replaced by anions such as hydrogen phosphate by a slow diffusion-controlled ion exchange process. Zn2Al-NAC fulfil basic requirements to be employed as a drug delivery system with a defined microscopic structure, appreciable loading capacity, and allowing a controlled release of NAC.

Direct interpretation of the X-ray and neutron three-dimensional difference pair distribution functions (3D-ΔPDFs) of yttria-stabilized zirconia.

Three-dimensional difference pair distribution functions (3D-ΔPDFs) from X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments are reported for yttria-stabilized zirconia (Zr0.82Y0.18O1.91). A quantitative analysis of the signatures in the three-dimensional difference pair distribution functions is used to establish that oxygen ions neighbouring a vacancy shift by 0.525 (5) Å along ⟨1, 0, 0⟩ towards the vacancy while metal ions neighbouring a vacancy shift by 0.465 (2) Å along ⟨1, 1, 1⟩ away from the vacancy. The neutron 3D-ΔPDF shows a tendency for vacancies to cluster along ⟨½, ½, ½⟩, which results in sixfold coordinated metal ions.

Iron Nanoparticles to Catalyze Graphitization of Cellulose for Energy Storage Applications

The production of highly graphitic carbon from bioresources is an environmentally friendly approach to synthesize graphene for energy storage applications. Iron catalytic graphitization of cellulose, the most abundant biopolymer on earth, is an alternative approach as until now, cellulose has been classified as poorly graphitizable material. In this study, the impact of processing temperature and iron impregnation on the extent of graphitization of the cellulose-derived graphitic carbon nanostructure is uncovered by combining Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray pair distribution function analysis. Raman spectroscopy is used in an innovative way to describe the evolution of the average graphitic phase size where the ash content misguides the X-ray diffraction analysis. A correlation was established between (i) the in-plane crystallite size La and the ID″/IG first-order ratio, (ii) the out-of-plane Lc crystallite size and the IG/Itot′ second-order ratio, and (iii) the second-order Raman IG′/Itot′ ratio and the average number of carbon layers per carbon crystallite. For iron-impregnated cellulose, phase quantification and analysis of the spatial distribution reveal highly crystalline rhombohedral graphite surrounded by a nanocrystalline carbon matrix. We explicitly show that traditionally non-graphitizable carbons can be used to form a graphite-like structure with multilayers of graphene sheets by careful addition of widely available nontoxic metal as catalysts. The study also shows that the impact of the catalyst is much more effective than the temperature in the nanostructure transformation. The proposed approach and the results obtained provide interesting insights that should stimulate further works aimed at extending the knowledge in the field.

Revealing the Correlation between the Solvation Structures and the Transport Properties of Water-in-Salt Electrolytes

Water-in-salt (WIS) electrolytes containing 21 m lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) have been considered as a safe and environment-friendly alternative to common organic electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries. However, the relation between the solvation structures and transport properties of these materials remains elusive. Herein, we performed small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) measurements of LiTFSI aqueous solutions at a wide range of concentrations. Combined with molecular dynamics simulations, the detailed solvation structures from long to short length scale were resolved. We found that the TFSI– solvation structures consist of TFSI– solvated structures and TFSI– networks; the former corresponds to solvent separated ion pairs, while the latter corresponds to contact ion pairs and cation–anion aggregates. In addition, we found that the relaxation time in the q range associated with the anion network structure exhibits the same concentration dependence as the viscosity. By combining the results from the experiments and simulations, this study revealed a correlation between the solvation structures of LiTFSI and the transport properties of the solutions, which is critical to understand the relation between the transport properties and the dynamics of the ions for imide-based lithium-ion salt aqueous electrolytes.

Cubic or Not Cubic? Combined Experimental and Computational Investigation of the Short-Range Order of Tin Halide Perovskites.

Tin-based metal halide perovskites with a composition of ASnX3 (where A= MA or FA and X = I or Br) have been investigated by means of X-ray total scattering techniques coupled to pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. These studies revealed that that none of the four perovskites has a cubic symmetry at the local scale and that a degree of increasing distortion is always present, in particular when the cation size is increased, i.e., from MA to FA, and the hardness of the anion is increased, i.e., from Br- to I-. Electronic structure calculations provided good agreement with experimental band gaps for the four perovskites when local dynamical distortions were included in the calculations. The averaged structure obtained from molecular dynamics simulations was consistent with experimental local structures determined via X-ray PDF, thus highlighting the robustness of computational modeling and strengthening the correlation between experimental and computational results.

Simple Synthesis of Monodisperse Ultrasmall Au Icosahedral Nanoparticles

Ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (NPs) with a mean diameter below 2 nm are being intensively studied due to their unique structural and chemical properties. At such small sizes, metal particles can appear as various polyhedra with different atomic structures depending on whether electronic effects, surface energy, or the nucleation mechanism govern their crystallization. Therefore, the synthesis of monodisperse nanoparticles of a very small size and well-defined structure requires a good understanding of the different steps of the crystallization process, which can be achieved by conducting and coupling in situ studies at different length and time scales. In this article, we describe the synthesis of ultrasmall gold NPs by reduction of HAuCl4 in solution of oleylamine (OY) in hexane using trialkylsilanes as reducing agents. Thanks to time-resolved in situ small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopy kinetic studies, a competition between nucleation of Au NPs from a solution containing Au(III) clusters and crystallization of a lamellar phase of composition OY-Au(I)-Cl was revealed. In situ X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis showed that the first chemical pathway leads to icosahedral NPs while the reduction of OY-Au(I)-Cl leads to fcc NPs. Increasing the reaction rate, achieved by adjusting the silane concentration, changing the nature of the silane (triethylsilane instead of triisopropylsilane), and/or increasing the temperature of reaction, avoided the formation of the Au(I) lamellar phase as the intermediate, leading to monodisperse Au NPs with an icosahedral structure. This fairly simple liquid-phase synthesis method yields highly concentrated suspensions of icosahedral gold NPs, paving the way for their future use in practical applications such as catalysis.

A spherical harmonics method for processing anisotropic X-ray atomic pair distribution functions

In this work, a general spherical harmonics method for the extraction of anisotropic pair distribution functions (PDFs) is described. In the structural study of functional crystallized materials, there is an urgent need for investigation of local structures under the application of external stimuli, such as an electric field and stress. A well established technique for local structural studies is PDF analysis, but the extraction of X-ray PDF data is usually based on angular integrations of isotropic X-ray structure functions, which is no longer valid for the anisotropic responses of materials under orientation-dependent stimuli. Therefore, an advanced spherical harmonics method has been developed, to transform 2D X-ray total-scattering data into anisotropic PDF data on the basis of the 3D diffraction geometry and a Fourier transform. The electric-field-induced local structural change in PbZr0.54Ti0.46O3 ceramics is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.

Noncovalent bonding assessment by pair distribution function.

Noncovalent interactions are essential in the formation and properties of a diverse range of materials. However, reliably identifying noncovalent interactions remains challenging using conventional methods such as X-ray diffraction, especially in nanocrystalline, poorly crystalline or amorphous materials which lack long-range lattice periodicity. Here, we demonstrate the accurate determination of deviations in the local structure and tilting of aromatic rings during the temperature-induced first order structural transition in the 1 : 1 adduct of 4,4'-bipyridinium squarate (BIPY:SQA) from the low temperature form HAZFAP01 to high temperature HAZFAP07 by X-ray pair distribution function. This work demonstrates how pair distribution function analyses can improve our understanding of local structural deviations resulting from noncovalent bonds and guide the development of novel functional materials.

Detailed insights into the formation pathway of CdS and ZnS in solution: a multi-modal in situ characterisation approach.

The high stability, high availability, and wide size-dependent bandgap energy of sulphidic semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) render them promising for applications in optoelectronic devices and solar cells. However, the tunability of their optical properties depends on the strict control of their crystal structure and crystallisation process. Herein, we studied the structural evolution during the formation of CdS and ZnS in solution by combining in situ luminescence spectroscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) and pair distribution function (PDF) analyses for the first time. The influence of precursor type, concentration, temperature and heating program on the product formation and on the bandgap or trap emission were investigated in detail. In summary, for CdS, single-source precursor (SSP) polyol strategies using the dichlorobis(thiourea)cadmium(II) complex and double-source precursor approaches combining Cd(CH3COO)2·2H2O and thiourea led to the straightforward product at 100 °C, while the catena((m2-acetato-O,O')-(acetate-O,O')-(m2-thiourea)-cadmium) complex was formed at 25 and 80 °C. For ZnS, the reaction between Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O and thiourea at 100 °C led to the product formation after the crystallisation and dissolution of an unknown intermediate. At 180 °C, besides an unknown phase, the acetato-bis(thiourea)-zinc(II) complex was also detected as a reaction intermediate. The formation of such reaction intermediates, which generally remain undetected applying only ex situ characterisation approaches, reinforce the importance of in situ analysis for promoting the advance on the production of tailored semiconductor materials.

Structural water in amorphous carbonate minerals: ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of X-ray pair distribution experiments.

Water is known to play a controlling role in directing mineralization pathways and stabilizing metastable amorphous intermediates in hydrous carbonate mineral MCO3·nH2O systems, where M2+ is a divalent metal cation. Despite this recognition, the nature of the controls on crystallization is poorly understood, largely owing to the difficulty in characterizing the dynamically disordered structures of amorphous intermediates at the atomic scale. Here, we present a series of atomistic models, derived from ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, across a range of experimentally relevant cations (M = Ca, Mg, Sr) and hydration levels (0 ≤ n ≤ 2). Theoretical simulations of the dependence of the X-ray pair distribution function on the hydration level n show good agreement with available experimental data and thus provide further evidence for a lack of significant nanoscale structure in amorphous carbonates. Upon dehydration, the metal coordination number does not change significantly, but the relative extent of water dissociation increases, indicating that a thermodynamic driving force exists for water dissociation to accompany dehydration. Mg strongly favors monodentate conformation of carbonate ligands and shows a marked preference to exchange monodentate carbonate O for water O upon hydration, whereas Ca and Sr exchange mono- and bidentate carbonate ligands with comparable frequency. Water forms an extensive hydrogen bond network among both water and carbonate groups that exhibits frequent proton transfers for all three cations considered suggesting that proton mobility is likely predominantly due to water dissociation and proton transfer reactions rather than molecular water diffusion.

Switch of Thermal Expansions Triggered by Itinerant Electrons in Isostructural Metal Trifluorides.

Manageable thermal expansion (MTE) of metal trifluorides can be achieved by introducing local structure distortion (LSD) in the negative thermal expansion ScF3. However, an open issue is why isostructural TiF3, free of LSD, exhibits positive thermal expansion. Herein, a combined analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray pair distribution function, and rigorous first-principles calculations was performed to reveal the important role of itinerant electrons in mediating soft phonons and lattice dynamics. Metallic TiF3 demonstrates itinerant electrons and a suppressed Grüneisen parameter γ ≈ -20, while insulating ScF3 absence of itinerant electrons has a considerable γ ≈ -120. With increasing electron doping concentrations in ScF3, soft phonons become hardened and the γ is repressed significantly, identical to TiF3. The presented results update the thermal expansion transition mechanism in framework structure analogues and provide a practical approach to obtaining MTE without inducing sizable structure distortion.
