Coherent Precipitates with Strong Domain Wall Pinning in Alkaline Niobate Ferroelectrics.

High-power piezoelectric applications are predicted to share approximately one-third of the lead-free piezoelectric ceramic market in 2024 with alkaline niobates as the primary competitor. To suppress self-heating in high-power devices due to mechanical loss when driven by large electric fields, piezoelectric hardening to restrict domain wall motion is required. In the present work, highly effective piezoelectric hardening via coherent plate-like precipitates in a model system of the (Li,Na)NbO3 (LNN) solid solution delivers a reduction in losses, quantified as an electromechanical quality factor, by a factor of ten. Various thermal aging schemes are demonstrated to control the average size, number density, and location of the precipitates. The established properties are correlated with a detailed determination of short- and long-range atomic structure by X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis, respectively, as well as microstructure determined by transmission electron microscopy. The impact of microstructure with precipitates on both small- and large-field properties is also established. These results pave the way to implement precipitate hardening in piezoelectric materials, analogous to precipitate hardening in metals, broadening their use cases in applications.

Is there a common reaction pathway for chromium sulfides as anodes in sodium-ion batteries? A case study about sodium storage properties of MCr2S4 (M = Cr, Ti, Fe)

We present new insights into the electrochemical properties of three metal sulfides MCr2S4 (M = Cr, Ti, Fe) probed as anode materials in sodium-ion batteries for the first time. The electrodes deliver decent reversible capacities and good long-term cycle stability, e.g., 470, 375, and 524 mAh g−1 are obtained after 200 cycles applying 0.5 A g−1 for M = Cr, Ti, and Fe, respectively. The reaction mechanisms are investigated via synchrotron-based X-ray powder diffraction and pair distribution function analyses. The highly crystalline educts are decomposed into Na2S nanoparticles and ultra-small metal particles during initial discharge without formation of intermediate NaCrS2 domains as previously reported for CuCrS2 and NiCr2S4. After a full cycle, the structural integrity of MCr2S4 (M = Cr, Ti, Fe) is not recovered. Thus, the Na storage properties are attributed to redox reactions between nanoscopic to X-ray amorphous conversion products with only local atomic correlations M···S/S···S in the charged and M···M/Na···S in the discharged state.Graphical

Cation configuration in transition-metal layered oxides

<h2>Summary</h2> The cation configuration of transition-metal (TM) layered oxides used as cathode materials for batteries, which significantly affects their intrinsic performance, is extremely important for understanding their electrochemical behavior and remained unclear until now. Herein, the local cation configuration of a series of Mn-based Li-rich layered oxides (Mn-LLOs) was revealed thoroughly by statistical methods, and the influence of the cation configuration on the cationic/anionic redox was also elucidated. Using neutron and synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function combined with Monte Carlo simulation, the existence of Li₂MnO₃ rather than Li₂MnO₃-like crystal domain in all Mn-LLOs is revealed strongly, showing each Li atom in the TM layer is surrounded by six Mn atoms with no Ni atom to form a LiMn₆ unit, and the reversibility of oxygen redox is closely related with those local structure environments. This work provides insights for the cation configuration investigation of oxide materials and also sheds light on the understanding of the local structure-activity relationship.

Local-Structure Analysis of Li Oxy-Sulfide Glass-Ceramic Solid Electrolytes

In the global quest to tackle climate change and the promotion of sustainable energy sources, energy storage has become an important aspect and consequently has attracted great research attention. Solid state batteries promise increased energy density and safety in comparison to current commercial Li-ion batteries[1]. Fast ion conducting solid electrolyte materials are an essential part of solid-state batteries. The study of suitable materials and the understanding of the conduction mechanisms is therefore of high importance.Sulfide and thiophosphate glasses have been identified as promising candidates as fast ion conducting materials and great progress has been made since the first studies in 1980[2]. One drawback of these materials is their sensitivity against humidity and instability on exposure to air. Recently, it was demonstrated that the doping of thiophosphate glasses with oxygen has a positive effect on the ion conductivity[2]. Furthermore, an improvement of the chemical and physical stability of these doped glasses could be achieved. The combination of these two effects renders oxygen doping a promising strategy. However, very little is known so far about the local structure of the doped glasses and glass ceramics, yet this information is crucial to enable purposeful development and further improvement of these materials.Hence, we have studied the local structure of oxy-sulfide glasses as well as their structural evolution and crystallization behavior with increasing temperature. Additionally, the influence of the starting materials was evaluated by comparing materials from two different set of starting materials using the same synthesis route. Oxy-sulfide glasses of the composition Li3POxS4-x with 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.2 were synthesized by ball milling appropriate amounts of either Li2O, Li2S and P2S5, or Li3PS4 and Li3PO4. Temperature dependent x-ray powder diffraction and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, supported by Raman spectroscopy and other characterization techniques, was then used to identify crystal phases and structural moieties. Atomic structure and Mott nature of the insulating charge density wave phase of 1T-TaS2

Using x-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and computer modeling, we explore structure models for the complex charge density wave (CDW) phases of layered 1T-TaS2 that both well capture their atomic-level features and are amenable to electronic structure calculations. The models give the most probable position of constituent atoms in terms of 3D repetitive unit cells comprising a minimum number of Ta–S layers. Structure modeling results confirm the emergence of star-of-David (SD) like clusters of Ta atoms in the high-temperature incommensurate (IC) CDW phase and show that, contrary to the suggestions of recent studies, the low-temperature commensurate (C) CDW phase expands upon cooling thus reducing lattice strain. The C-CDW phase is also found to preserve the stacking sequence of Ta–S layers found in the room temperature, nearly commensurate (NC) CDW phase to a large extent. DFT based on the PDF refined model shows that bulk C-CDW 1T-TaS2 also preserves the insulating state of individual layers of SD clusters, favoring the Mott physics description of the metal-to-insulator (NC-CDW to C-CDW) phase transition in 1T-TaS2. Our work highlights the importance of using precise crystal structure models in determining the nature of electronic phases in complex materials.

Two-Dimensional Negative Thermal Expansion in a Facile and Low-Cost Oxalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework.

Two-dimensional negative thermal expansion (NTE) is achieved in a tetragonal oxalate-based metal-organic framework (MOF), CdZrSr(C2O4)4, within a temperature range from 123 to 398 K [space group I4̅m2, αa = -2.4(7) M K-1, αc = 11.3(3) M K-1, and αV = 6.4(1) M K-1]. By combining variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, a high-resolution synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function, and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry, we shows that NTE within the ab plane derives from the oriented rotation of an oxalate ligand in zigzag chains (-CdO8-ox-ZrO8-ox-)∞. That is simplified to the Zr atom rotating with an unchanged Zr···Cd distance as the radius, which also gives rise to the deformation of a hingelike connection along the c axis and results in its positive thermal expansion. By virtue of the facile and low-cost oxalate ligand, the present NTE MOF may show application prospects in the future.

Structural properties of defective (CH3NH3)2Cu(Cl1-xBrx)4 compounds.

The crystal structures of (CH3NH3)2Cu(Cl1-xBrx)4 compounds have been investigated by means of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis at room temperature. As a result, new insights are gained about the structural properties of these compounds, suggesting a monoclinic symmetry (space group No. 14: P21/c - C_{2h}^{5}) induced by the co-operative orbital ordering produced by the Jahn-Teller distortion characterizing the 3d9 Cu2+ ion. In contrast to previous studies, a significant amount of vacancies is found at halogen positions, a feature that can be likely ascribed to the synthesis technique adopted in the present study. Br atoms preferentially occupy axial positions, likely on account of reduced steric hindrance at these sites.

Investigating pair distribution function use in analysis of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite and carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a complex material, which is often nanocrystalline when found within a biological setting. This work has directly compared the structural characteristics derived from data collected using a conventional laboratory-based X-ray diffractometer with those collected from a dedicated pair distribution function (PDF) beamline at Diamond Light Source. In particular, the application of PDF analysis methods to carbonated HA is evaluated. 20 synthetic samples were measured using both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and PDFs. Both Rietveld refinement (of laboratory XRD data) and real-space refinement (of PDF data) were used to analyse all samples. The results of Rietveld and real-space refinements were compared to evaluate their application to crystalline and nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite. Significant relationships were observed between real-space refinement parameters and increasing carbonate substitution. Understanding the local order of synthetic hydroxyapatite can benefit several fields, including both biomedical and clinical settings.

Local monoclinic polarization rotation promoting a different domain alignment in rhombohedral Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ferroelectrics

Domain switching takes a substantial role in the macroscopic electrical properties of perovskite-type ferroelectric materials. However, the attainable domain alignment in polycrystalline states is often far away from the saturation due to the constraint of long-range crystallographic symmetry. Herein, we report a field-induced saturated polarization alignment, facilitated by local monoclinic polarization rotation in conventional rhombohedral $\mathrm{Pb}({\mathrm{Zr}}_{0.54}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{0.46}){\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ via advanced electrical basing in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction and pair distribution function measurements. It is found that the polarization alignment can reach the upper limit of theoretically calculated value in rhombohedral ceramic during high electric-field poling, and such a state can be maintained upon removal of electric field. In situ pair distribution function analysis demonstrates the occurrence of monoclinic distortion at local length $(&lt;10\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\AA{})$, where the electric-field driven polarization rotation emerges, and promoting the alignment of polarization variations. Concurrently, large local piezoelectric strain $(1000\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{pm}/\mathrm{V})$ and intrinsic lattice piezoelectric response $(1400\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{pm}/\mathrm{V})$ during poling are found to be generated, while large remanent strains are also observed. These results offer fresh insight into the role of local structure in domain switching behavior and have potential for the theoretical investigation of domain alignment in ferroelectrics.

Chemical order-disorder nanodomains in Fe3Pt bulk alloy.

Chemical ordering is a common phenomenon and highly correlated with the properties of solid materials. By means of the redistribution of atoms and chemical bonds, it invokes an effective lattice adjustment and tailors corresponding physical properties. To date, however, directly probing the 3D interfacial interactions of chemical ordering remains a big challenge. In this work, we deciphered the interlaced distribution of nanosized domains with chemical order/disorder in Fe3Pt bulk alloy. HAADF-STEM images evidence the existence of such nanodomains. The reverse Monte Carlo method with the X-ray pair distribution function data reveal the 3D distribution of local structures and the tensile effect in the disordered domains at the single-atomic level. The chemical bonding around the domain boundary changes the bonding feature in the disordered side and reduces the local magnetic moment of Fe atoms. This results in a suppressed negative thermal expansion and extended temperature range in Fe3Pt bulk alloy with nanodomains. Our study demonstrates a local revelation for the chemical order/disorder nanodomains in bulk alloy. The understanding gained from atomic short-range interactions within the domain boundaries provides useful insights with regard to designing new functional compounds.

Mesophase Transitions in [(C2H5)4N][FeBrCl3] and [(CH3)4N][FeBrCl3] Ferroic Plastic Crystals

Plastic crystals are supramolecular materials that possess a unique high entropy mesophase at elevated temperatures, where a long-range structural symmetry coexists with a local molecular orientational disorder. The transition to mesophase can involve a large entropy change useful for thermal energy storage and influences the temperature range of ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties, important for sensor applications. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis were used to study the structure, while calorimetry, dielectric, leakage current measurements, and density functional theory were used to investigate the influence of the organic cation on the structure and properties of tetraethylammonium bromotrichloroferrate(III) [(C2H5)4N][FeBrCl3] and tetramethylammonium bromotrichloroferrate [(CH3)4N][FeBrCl3]. The [(C2H5)4N][FeBrCl3] mesophase transition had an entropy change of 151.5 J·K–1·kg–1, while [(CH3)4N][FeBrCl3] had only 49 J·K–1·kg–1. This was explained by the [(C2H5)4N][FeBrCl3] mesophase having less long-range structural symmetry and more local orientational disorder, of both the cations and anions, compared to [(CH3)4N][FeBrCl3]. Both materials exhibited at least two conductive mechanisms below the transition, vacancy-mediated ionic and electronic conduction. The introduction of anion orientational freedom, as opposed to cation orientational freedom, at the mesophase transition was most influential for the electrical properties.

A new Ti2V0.9Cr0.1C2Tx MXene with ultrahigh gravimetric capacitance

MXenes are a recently discovered family of two-dimensional (2D) early-transition metal carbides and carbonitrides that have already shown many attractive properties and great promise in energy storage and other applications. Although many MXenes have been synthesized, most MXenes contain only one or two transition metals. The preparation of medium-entropy or high-entropy MXenes is an important and challenging task due to the excellent properties resulting from increased configurational entropy. Herein, new three-transition-metal MAX phases, Ti2V1−yCryAlC2, and the corresponding MXenes were synthesized successfully for the first time. By combining aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM), density functional theory (DFT) and synchrotron X-ray pair distribution functions (PDF) analyses, we determined the structure of Ti2V0.9Cr0.1C2Tx, which exhibits a Ti-V-Cr solid solution in the three atomic layers. Furthermore, when applying these MXenes as the electrode of a supercapacitor, the single-layer Ti2V0.9Cr0.1C2Tx shows a remarkable gravimetric capacitance (553.27 F g−1 at 2 mV s−1). This work not only expands the family of MXenes, but also provides a strategy to prepare medium-entropy and high-entropy MXenes.

Stable CsPbBr3 Nanoclusters Feature a Disk-like Shape and a Distorted Orthorhombic Structure.

CsPbBr3 nanoclusters have been synthesized by several groups and mostly employed as single-source precursors for the synthesis of anisotropic perovskite nanostructures or perovskite-based heterostructures. Yet, a detailed characterization of such clusters is still lacking due to their high instability. In this work, we were able to stabilize CsPbBr3 nanoclusters by carefully selecting ad hoc ligands (benzoic acid together with oleylamine) to passivate their surface. The clusters have a narrow absorption peak at 400 nm, a band-edge emission peaked at 410 nm at room temperature, and their composition is identified as CsPbBr2.3. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function measurements indicate that the clusters exhibit a disk-like shape with a thickness smaller than 2 nm and a diameter of 13 nm, and their crystal structure is a highly distorted orthorhombic CsPbBr3. Based on small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering analyses, the clusters tend to form a two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal packing with a short-range order and a lamellar packing with a long-range order.

Pyrolysis of a metal-organic framework followed by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, powder diffraction and pair distribution function analysis.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can serve as precursors for new nanomaterials via thermal decomposition. Such MOF-derived nanomaterials (MDNs) are often comprised of metal and/or metal oxide particles embedded on porous carbon. The morphology of MDNs is similar to that of the precursor MOF, and improved stability and catalytic properties have been demonstrated. However, the pathway from MOF to MDN is only well understood for a few systems, and in situ studies are needed to elucidate the full phase behaviour and time/temperature dependency. In this work, we follow the MOF-to-MDN transformation in situ by using three complementary techniques: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and X-ray total scattering/pair distribution function (TS/PDF) analysis. The thermal decomposition of HKUST-1, i.e. the archetypical MOF Cu3(btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)2, is followed from room temperature to 500 °C by applying different heating ramps. Real space correlations are followed by PDF and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis, and quantitative phase fractions are obtained by refinement of PXRD and PDF data, and by linear combination analysis (LCA) of X-ray absorption near edge Structure (XANES) data. We find that HKUST-1 decomposes at 300-325 °C into copper(I) oxide and metallic copper. Above 350-470 °C, metal particles remain as the only copper species. There is an overall good agreement between all three techniques with respect to the phase evolution, and the study paves the road towards rational synthesis of a Cu2O/Cu/carbon material with the desired metal/metal oxide composition. More importantly, our investigations serve as a benchmark study demonstrating that this methodology is generally applicable for studying the thermal decomposition of MOFs.

Effects of aluminum incorporation on the schwertmannite structure and surface properties.

Schwertmannite is a common nanomineral in acid sulfate environments such as Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) and Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS). Its high surface area and positively charged surface result in a strong affinity towards toxic oxyanions such as arsenate in solution. However, natural precipitation of schwertmannite also involves the accumulation of other impurities, in particular aluminum, an element that is often incorporated into the structure of Fe-oxide minerals, such as goethite and ferrihydrite, affecting their structural and surface properties. However, little is known about the effect of Al incorporation in schwertmannite on the removal capacity of toxic oxyanions found in AMD and ASS (e.g. arsenate). In this paper, schwertmannite samples with variable Al concentration were synthetized and employed in arsenate adsorption isotherm experiments at a constant pH of 3.5. Solid samples before and after arsenate adsorption were characterized using high energy X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analyses in order to identify structural differences correlated with the Al content as well as variations in the coordination of arsenate adsorbed on the mineral surface. These analyses showed limited Al accumulation on schwertmannite (up to 5%) with a low effect on its structure. The maximum arsenate sorption capacity (258 mmolH2AsO4 molFe-1) was in the range of that with pure schwertmannite, but a higher proportion of inner-sphere coordination was observed. Finally, Al was found to desorb from schwertmannite, with adsorbed arsenate preventing this effect and increasing the stability of the mineral. These results are useful to interpret observations from the field, in particular from river water affected by AMD and ASS, where similar conditions are observed, and where aluminum incorporation is expected.

Nanopore facilitated monohydrocalcitic amorphous calcium carbonate precipitation.

Predicting the precipitation of solids is important in both natural systems and subsurface energy applications. The factors controlling reaction mechanisms, phase selection and conversion between phases are particularly important. In this contribution the precipitation and growth of an amorphous calcium carbonate species from flowing aqueous solution in a nanoporous controlled pore glass is followed in situ with differential X-ray pair distribution function analysis. It is discovered that the local atomic structure of this phase indicates monohydrocalcite-like pair-pair correlations, yet is functionally amorphous because it lacks long-range structure. The unexpected occurrence of synthetic proto-monohydrocalcite amorphous calcium carbonate, precipitated from a solution undersaturated with respect to published solubilities, suggests that nanopore confinement facilitates formation of an amorphous phase at the expense of more favorable crystalline ones. This result illustrates that confinement and interface effects are physical factors exerting control on mineral nucleation behavior in natural and geological systems.

Zr4+ solution structures from pair distribution function analysis.

The structures of metal ions in solution constitute essential information for obtaining chemical insight spanning from catalytic reaction mechanisms to formation of functional nanomaterials. Here, we explore Zr4+ solution structures using X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis across pH (0-14), concentrations (0.1-1.5 M), solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile) and metal sources (ZrCl4, ZrOCl2·8H2O, ZrO(NO3)2·xH2O). In water, [Zr4(OH)8(OH2)16]8+-tetramers are predominant, while non-aqueous solvents contain monomeric complexes. The PDF analysis also reveals second sphere coordination of chloride counter ions to the aqueous tetramers. The results are reproducible across data measured at three different beamlines at the PETRA-III and MAX IV synchrotron light sources.

Growth kinetics determine the polydispersity and size of PbS and PbSe nanocrystals.

A library of thio- and selenourea derivatives is used to adjust the kinetics of PbE (E = S, Se) nanocrystal formation across a 1000-fold range (kr = 10−1 to 10−4 s−1), at several temperatures (80–120 °C), under a standard set of conditions (Pb : E = 1.2 : 1, [Pb(oleate)2] = 10.8 mM, [chalcogenourea] = 9.0 mM). An induction delay (tind) is observed prior to the onset of nanocrystal absorption during which PbE solute is observed using in situ X-ray total scattering. Density functional theory models fit to the X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) support a Pb2(μ2-S)2(Pb(O2CR)2)2 structure. Absorption spectra of aliquots reveal a continuous increase in the number of nanocrystals over more than half of the total reaction time at low temperatures. A strong correlation between the width of the nucleation phase and reaction temperature is observed that does not correlate with the polydispersity. These findings are antithetical to the critical concentration dependence of nucleation that underpins the La Mer hypothesis and demonstrates that the duration of the nucleation period has a minor influence on the size distribution. The results can be explained by growth kinetics that are size dependent, more rapid at high temperature, and self limiting at low temperatures.

Point defect induced incommensurate dipole moments in the KCa2Nb3O10 Dion-Jacobson layered perovskite

Local structural distortions due to isolated atomic defects and defect complexes strongly affect the macroscopic properties of oxide ceramics. While the characterization of local defect structures is more common in simple $\mathrm{AB}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ perovskites, unambiguous determination of the same in layered perovskites is more difficult due to their complex crystal structures. Here, we combined x-ray pair distribution function and density functional theory calculations to characterize the structure of cation-oxygen divacancy pairs in a Dion-Jacobson (D-J) layered perovskite. Our results indicate that local incommensurate dipole moments with polarization density in the range of $\ensuremath{\sim}0.1--17\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{C}/\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$ are created due to divacancy-induced structural distortions in the D-J phase $\mathrm{K}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{2}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{10}$. This is comparable with defect dipole moments observed in well-known perovskite ferroelectrics. The current results imply that controlling the atomic defects can potentially lead to significant control of dielectric properties in D-J layered perovskites.

A High Energy X-ray Diffraction Study of Amorphous Indomethacin

Amorphous pharmaceuticals often possess a wide range of molecular conformations and bonding arrangements. The x-ray pair distribution function (PDF) method is a powerful technique for the characterization of variations in both intra-molecular and inter-molecular packing arrangements. Here, the x-ray PDF of amorphous Indomethacin is shown to be particularly sensitive to the preferred orientations of the chlorobenzyl ring found in isomers in the crystalline state. In some cases, the chlorobenzyl ring has no preferred torsional angle in the amorphous form, while in others evidence of distinct isomer orientations are observed. Amorphous samples with no preferred torsion angles of the chlorobenzyl ring are found to favor enhanced inter-molecular hydrogen bonding, and this is reflected in the intensity of the first sharp diffraction peak. These significant variations in structure rule out amorphous Indomethacin as a possible standard for x-ray PDF measurements. At high humidity, time resolved PDF's for >40 h reveal water molecules forming hydrogen bonds with Indomethacin molecules. A simple linear hydrogen bond model indicates that water molecules in the wet amorphous form have similar hydrogen bond strengths to those found between Indomethacin dimers or chains in the dry amorphous form.
