THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GOOGLE CLASSROOM AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA: A CASE OF STATE ISLAMIC INSTITUTE OF KENDARI, INDONESIA

Purpose: This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Google Classroom in the learning process at the State Islamic Institute of Kendari.
 Methodology: The research method used in this study is a qualitative method, in-depth interview. Data collection was done through interview sessions with students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education.
 Main Findings: The findings showed that the use of Google Classroom was effective with various limitations: (1) not all students got an account what was provided by the lecturers because they did not have a smartphone, (2) Wi-Fi availability in the campus was limited and (3) the students did not have enough mobile data plan during the time of online discussion and even some students submitted their assignments using their friends’ account.
 Applications of this study: The study will allow future initiatives to take into consideration the issues and challenges related to accessibility, connectivity and affordability among the users of the platform, in this case the students.
 Novelty/Originality: This study provides valuable insights into the initiatives taken by the institutions of higher education in Indonesia that lack a proper platform for implementing e-learning. Issues and challenges found in this study contribute to making important strategic decisions when designing and implementing such initiatives in the future.

The high level of competition in retail makes the market participants constantly seek new tools to fight for the consumer and his means. One such tool is promotion. At the same time, the use of outdated technologies can not guarantee success. Accordingly, there is a need to find new tools for promoting retail businesses. The article determines that the modern promotion measures considered by scientists are unsystematic, there is no approach to the choice of promotion tools by retail enterprises of different types. It has been researched that the most promising are the directions of trading by such innovative methods: neuromarketing, innovative activity, event-events and introduction of social marketing. The approach to choosing effective ways of competitiveness depending on the type of retail networks is formed. Yes, audio marketing has advantages and ease of use when compared to aromarketing. The most relevant innovative tools that can be applied to all types of networks are the availability of Wi-Fi and electronic price tags, at the expense of relatively low cost and constant effect. Neuromarketing is effective only under continuous use. Innovative activity at the enterprise is introduced gradually due to high costs. The proposed activities are permanent, so the amount of costs is further reduced and customer comfort increases. Event activities have many tools and have a greater impact on customer mood and loyalty. However, a large number of event events can adversely affect the image of the retail network. Adaptive Decision of Wireless Access Network for Higher User Satisfaction

Today’s mobile devices mostly contain more than one wireless interface for Internet connection. Smartphones mostly have both LTE and Wi‐Fi for data communication through Internet. Although the availability of Wi‐Fi is incomparable to that of cellular network, its strength lies in the low cost and high data rate due to continuous PHY and MAC advancement of 802.11 protocol extensions. In this paper, we propose a device‐centric system that performs cost‐effective network connectivity to the mobile device by selectively activating Wi‐Fi communication according to the device mobility and corresponding history of Wi‐Fi usage. By analyzing the device mobility using attached sensors, the system selects appropriate Wi‐Fi that has been often used in that mobility state. The system was implemented in actual mobile devices that were used to several experiments we designed to prove high performance of the system.

Developing A Service Improvement System for the National Dutch Railways

Customer satisfaction is essential for public and railway services, because firms in these industries have contracts with governments requiring them to achieve specific customer satisfaction targets. In this paper, we describe a National Dutch Railways project in which we identify the major determinants of customer satisfaction. By combining multiple data sources, we link operational and marketing data to customer satisfaction. Our models show that train punctuality and sufficient seating within a train are important factors in customer satisfaction, as are other service elements, such as the availability of Wi-Fi in a train and the condition of facilities at a station. Drawing on the model results, the National Dutch Railways pursued initiatives to increase customer satisfaction. Among these initiatives is the development of an application that allows passengers to check seating availability, the design of a marketing dashboard reflecting developments in customer satisfaction, and the creation of a tool to identify the most critical determinants of customer satisfaction.

Understanding cross-cultural adoption of a first aid app

The increased availability of Wi-Fi and Internet coverage, coupled with the widespread use of Smartphones and tablet computers has facilitated the quick and efficient transfer of information through digital media, as well as the structured organisation of information into third-party apps. This paper focuses specifically on the use of a First Aid App in emergency situations, including large-scale critical events. We provide a comparative analysis of user engagement with a first aid app across nine culturally diverse countries. Due to the reported lack of reliable information provided by first aid and emergency apps generally, we analyse how organisational reputation affects user engagement with the app and provide a comparative analysis of user engagement during crises across countries with varying levels of risk. We determine that the key motivations influencing app uptake are largely dependent on users’ risk awareness and the local reputation of the app provider. We illustrate how such apps may contribute valuable insights into user behaviour during critical events across varying contexts of risk that can help fine tune user requirements for health and emergency apps across different risk contexts.

DISPOSICIÓN A PAGAR POR EL SERVICIO DE UN TREN RÁPIDO ENTRE BARRANQUILLA Y CARTAGENA

El presente trabajo estudia los factores que influyen en la disposición a pagar (DAP) por un nuevo servicio de tren rápido de pasajeros entre Barranquilla y Cartagena. Como instrumento de toma de datos se utilizó la técnica de valoración contingente y mediante una estrategia de experimentación secuencial fueron identificados los factores con efecto significativo sobre la DAP, cuyo valor medio fue de $29.000. Se calibró un modelo de regresión de primer orden que explica la DAP en función de las variables intervalo del servicio, tiempo de viaje y acceso a red Wi-Fi y tomas eléctricas. El proceso de optimización para la variable de respuesta permitió aumentar su valor hasta $39.000, que se considera muy bajo si se compara con los referentes internacionales para este tipo de servicios, llegando a la conclusión que queda en entredicho la viabilidad del sistema propuesto

Performance Modeling, Analysis, and Optimization of Delayed Mobile Data Offloading for Mobile Users

Operators have recently resorted to Wi-Fi offloading to deal with increasing data demand and induced congestion. Researchers have further suggested the use of delayed offloading: if no Wi-Fi connection is available, (some) traffic can be delayed up to a given deadline or until WiFi becomes available. Nevertheless, there is no clear consensus as to the benefits of delayed offloading, with a couple of recent experimental studies largely diverging in their conclusions, nor is it clear how these benefits depend on network characteristics (e.g., Wi-Fi availability), user traffic load, and so on. In this paper, we propose a queueing analytic model for delayed offloading, and derive the mean delay, offloading efficiency, and other metrics of interest, as a function of the user’s patience, and key network parameters for two different service disciplines (First Come First Served and Processor Sharing). We validate the accuracy of our results using a range of realistic scenarios and real data traces. Finally, we use these expressions to show how the user could optimally choose deadlines by solving the variations of a constrained optimization problem, in order to maximize her own benefits.

Performance Analysis of Mobile Data Offloading in Heterogeneous Networks

An unprecedented increase in the mobile data traffic volume has been recently reported due to the extensive use of smartphones, tablets, and laptops. This is a major concern for mobile network operators, who are forced to often operate very close to their capacity limits. Recently, different solutions have been proposed to overcome this problem. The deployment of additional infrastructure, the use of more advanced technologies (LTE), or offloading some traffic through Femtocells and WiFi are some of the solutions. Out of these, WiFi presents some key advantages such as its already widespread deployment and low cost. While benefits to operators have already been documented, it is less clear how much and under what conditions the user gains as well. Additionally, the increasingly heterogeneous deployment of cellular networks (partial 4G coverage, small cells, etc.) further complicates the picture regarding both operatorand user-related performance of data off loading. To this end, in this paper we propose a queueing analytic model that can be used to understand the performance improvements achievable by Wi-Fi-based data off loading, as a function of Wi-Fi availability and performance, user mobility and traffic load, and the coverage ratio and respective rates of different cellular technologies available. We validate our theory against simulations for realistic scenarios and parameters, and provide some initial insights as to the offloading gains expected in practice.

Distributed Localization for Participatory Sensing Systems

The focus of this paper is on participatory sensing in which every participant carrying smartphone senses its environment and shares it with server. Most of the applications require location information to perform sensing activity. But, GPS drains considerable amount of energy if used for localization. There exists a centralized localization approach to detect a set of devices for the role of broadcaster which must turn on GPS. Its neighbouring devices rely on them to calculate their position. In this paper, we provide a novel distributed solution for finding roles for the participating mobile devices. It is important in real scenario to alleviate server from the burden of assigning roles. Our proposed approach does not make any assumption about the presence of infrastructure or device capabilities, other than the availability of WiFi and the ability to know devices within the WiFi range. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first protocol for distributed localization in participatory sensing system. Simulation results using real dataset demonstrate that our algorithm is capable of assigning role in 70-85% less time compared to the centralized algorithm but consumes 12-15% more energy as it does not find the optimal set of broadcasters which requires global information.

AMUSE: Empowering Users for Cost-Aware Offloading with Throughput-Delay Tradeoffs

To cope with recent exponential increases in demand for mobile data, wireless Internet service providers (ISPs) are increasingly changing their pricing plans and deploying WiFi hotspots to offload their mobile traffic. However, these ISP-centric approaches for traffic management do not always match the interests of mobile users. Users face a complex, multi-dimensional tradeoff between cost, throughput, and delay in making their offloading decisions: while they may save money and receive a higher throughput by waiting for WiFi access, they may not wait for WiFi if they are sensitive to delay. To navigate this tradeoff, we develop AMUSE (Adaptive bandwidth Management through USer-Empowerment), a functional prototype of a practical, cost-aware WiFi offloading system that takes into account a user's throughput-delay tradeoffs and cellular budget constraint. Based on predicted future usage and WiFi availability, AMUSE decides which applications to offload to what times of the day. Since nearly all traffic flows from mobile devices are TCP flows, we introduce a new receiver-side bandwidth allocation mechanism to practically enforce the assigned rate of each TCP application. Thus, AMUSE users can optimize their bandwidth rates according to their own cost-throughput-delay tradeoff without relying on support from different apps' content servers. Through a measurement study of 20 smartphone users' traffic usage traces, we observe that though users already offload a large amount of some application types, our framework can offload a significant additional portion of users' cellular traffic. We implement AMUSE and evaluate its effectiveness with 3G and WiFi usage data obtained from a trial with 37 mobile users. Our results show that AMUSE improves user utility, when compared with AMUSE, other offloading algorithms yield 14\% and 27\% lower user utilities for light and heavy users, respectively.

E-Atmospheric Effects on Youth Intention to Revisit a Cafe

Abstract The importance of studying cafe e-atmospherics has been acknowledged by academics, practitioners and government bodies. However, there is still lacking of implementation of cafe e- atmospherics that suits youth preferences, so as to increase their intention to revisit the cafe. Thus, this paper aims to provide specific youth profile and analyze e-atmospheric elements that can influence youth's intention to revisit the cafe. A structured interview is being conducted among twenty youths in Selangor, and it was found that majority of the youth is in the age of twenty two years old, bachelor's degree student earning less than RM1,000 per month. These sets of youth intend to revisit a cafe that have three main categories of e-atmospherics, which are cozy ambience, availability of Wifi and beautiful facility aesthetics.This paper concludes with the research implications and limitations of the study.

Marketing Evaluation of Public Transport Quality Attributes: Review of Two Waves of Research

Marketing activity in the sector of public transport (PT) is focused on the development of alternative to private cars use. Creation of this alternative requires development and delivery of value propositions to private cars’ owners. Such value propositions should be significant to the owners and lead to switch to public transport use. The paper is designed to promote better understanding of possibilities and limitations of attributes, which define PT quality aspects focused on the attraction of private cars’ users. We carried out two waves of research based on the methodology of parametric indicators use. Attributes under study are the following: cleanliness in PT, ticket sale speed, availability of cellular communication signal, availability of WiFi, availability of navigation tools in PT, etc. Findings allowed drawing the following conclusions: characteristics of PT service indicators can be improved based on regular researches; increase in PT service quality didn’t lead to decrease in private cars number; it’s necessary to carry out the analysis of private cars’ owners’ values to find out value propositions significant to them and consequently leading to shift to PT use. Selfie syndrome: An Infectious Gift of IT to Health Care

World wide availability of smart phones, Wi-Fi and mobile data package has worsened this scenario further. One recent survey of Media usage in the USA revealed that the three medias gaining people’s time are television as well as desktop and mobile internet. Between 2009 and 2012, average daily TV consumption per capita grew 11 minutes, desktop internet grew 27 minutes, and mobile internet grew by 60 minutes. In 2010, mobile surpassed print media for the first time. On the global level, desktop internet was the most used medium (approximately 260 minutes) per capita daily. Television ranked second with 150 minutes whereas mobile internet was used for 77 minutes per capita daily on average.

Improving interchanges in China: the experiential phenomenon

This paper examines the development of multimodal passenger rail hubs as part of the high-speed rail (HSR) network in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The instrumental, attitudinal and affective experience of the journey through the interchange is assessed from the user perspective. Surveys are used from three HSR stations: Beijing South, Chengdu East and Suzhou North (N=150), representing three types of HSR stations, i.e. national capital, regional capital and sub-regional city. ‘Expected’ and ‘realised’ facilities are compared – with the difference representing the ‘disgruntlement’ factor (after Stradling et al., 2007).The unprecedented urbanisation process currently being witnessed in the PRC, together with the rapid development of the HSR network and associated multimodal interchanges, offers much opportunity to develop a leading-edge public transport system and urban development predicated on the use of public transport. Although the importance of intermodal interchange hubs is being increasingly recognised, the journey experience through the interchange often remains poor, with problems including Wi-Fi availability, waiting and seating, the availability of door-to-door ticketing, crowdedness, access to the hub, time of travel through and waiting in the hub. MANOVA analysis and factorial (three way) MANOVA analysis are used to explore the differences between intermodal hubs, with many instrumental and particularly attitudinal and affective factors being significantly influenced by location.

Shifting perceptions, shifting identities: Communication technologies and the altered social, cultural and linguistic ecology in a remote indigenous context

While a digital divide remains evident in many remote Indigenous Australian communities, individual and collective information and communication technologies practices have developed in accordance with broadband, satellite or WiFi availability. This article examines the ways in which Indigenous youth in remote Australia are ‘coming of age’ in contexts where digitally‐mediated social interaction is a taken‐for‐granted aspect of social practice, communication and learning. While there are many positive aspects to this rapid development, it can also lead to intergenerational tensions as young people explore new patterns of behaviour, and older people come to terms with new cultural challenges. Drawing on long‐term ethnographic observations in Central Australia, the impact of technology and the shift in perceptions, communication modes, and social and cultural practice across the generations in the Western Desert region are traced.

Dynamic WIFI-Based Indoor Positioning in 3D Virtual World

Abstract. A web-based system based on the 3DTown project was proposed using Google Earth plug-in that brings information from indoor positioning devices and real-time sensors into an integrated 3D indoor and outdoor virtual world to visualize the dynamics of urban life within the 3D context of a city. We addressed limitation of the 3DTown project with particular emphasis on video surveillance camera used for indoor tracking purposes. The proposed solution was to utilize wireless local area network (WLAN) WiFi as a replacement technology for localizing objects of interest due to the wide spread availability and large coverage area of WiFi in indoor building spaces. Indoor positioning was performed using WiFi without modifying existing building infrastructure or introducing additional access points (AP)s. A hybrid probabilistic approach was used for indoor positioning based on previously recorded WiFi fingerprint database in the Petrie Science and Engineering building at York University. In addition, we have developed a 3D building modeling module that allows for efficient reconstruction of outdoor building models to be integrated with indoor building models; a sensor module for receiving, distributing, and visualizing real-time sensor data; and a web-based visualization module for users to explore the dynamic urban life in a virtual world. In order to solve the problems in the implementation of the proposed system, we introduce approaches for integration of indoor building models with indoor positioning data, as well as real-time sensor information and visualization on the web-based system. In this paper we report the preliminary results of our prototype system, demonstrating the system's capability for implementing a dynamic 3D indoor and outdoor virtual world that is composed of discrete modules connected through pre-determined communication protocols.

Fine-grained localization is extremely important to accurately locate a user indoors. Although innovative solutions have already been proposed, there is no solution that is universally accepted, easily implemented, user centric, and, most importantly, works in the absence of GSM coverage or WiFi availability. The advent of sensor rich smartphones has paved a way to develop a solution that can cater to these requirements. By employing a smartphone's built-in magnetic field sensor, magnetic signatures were collected inside buildings. These signatures displayed a uniqueness in their patterns due to the presence of different kinds of pillars, doors, elevators, etc., that consist of ferromagnetic materials like steel or iron. We theoretically analyze the cause of this uniqueness and then present an indoor localization solution by classifying signatures based on their patterns. However, to account for user walking speed variations so as to provide an application usable to a variety of users, we follow a dynamic time-warping-based approach that is known to work on similar signals irrespective of their variations in the time axis. Our approach resulted in localization distances of approximately 2m--6m with accuracies between 80--100% implying that it is sufficient to walk short distances across hallways to be located by the smartphone. The implementation of the application on different smartphones yielded response times of less than five secs, thereby validating the feasibility of our approach and making it a viable solution.

Context-Based Network Estimation for Energy-Efficient Ubiquitous Wireless Connectivity

Context information brings new opportunities for efficient and effective system resource management of mobile devices. In this work, we focus on the use of context information to achieve energy-efficient, ubiquitous wireless connectivity. Our field-collected data show that the energy cost of network interfaces poses a great challenge to ubiquitous connectivity, despite decent availability of cellular networks. We propose to leverage the complementary strengths of Wi-Fi and cellular interfaces by automatically selecting the most efficient one based on context information. We formulate the selection of wireless interfaces as a statistical decision problem. The challenge is to accurately estimate Wi-Fi network conditions without powering up the network interface. We explore the use of different context information, including time, history, cellular network conditions, and device motion, to statistically estimate Wi-Fi network conditions with negligible overhead. We evaluate several context-based algorithms for the estimation and prediction of current and future network conditions. Simulations using field-collected traces show that our network estimation algorithms can improve the average battery lifetime of a commercial mobile phone for an ECG reporting application by 40 percent, very close to the estimated theoretical upper bound of 42 percent. Furthermore, our most effective algorithm can predict Wi-Fi availability for one and ten hours into the future with 95 and 90 percent accuracy, respectively.
