A Diagnostic Case Study for Manufacturing Gas-Phase Chemical Sensors

In this work, we describe the design, manufacturing development, and refinement of a chemical detection platform designed to identify specific odorants in the natural gas industry. As the demand for reliable and sensitive volatile organic compound (VOC) detection systems is growing, our project aimed to construct multiple prototypes to enhance our detection capabilities and provide portable detection platforms. Throughout the development process across nominally identical and duplicated instruments, various failure modes were encountered, which provided insight into the design and manufacturing challenges present when designing such platforms. We conducted a post hoc root cause analysis for each failure mode, leading to a series of design modifications and solutions. This paper details these design and manufacturing challenges, the analytical methods used to diagnose and address them, and the resulting improvements in system performance. In the end, a debugging flow chart is presented to aid future researchers in solving the possible issues that could be encountered. Our findings show the complexities of bespoke chemical sensor design for unique applications and highlight the critical importance of iterative testing and problem-solving in the development of industrial detection technologies. Achieving consistency across devices is essential for optimizing device-to-device efficiency. The work presented is the first step towards ensuring uniform performance across a production run of chemically sensitive devices. In the future, a universal device calibration model will be implemented, eliminating the need to collect data from each individual device.

High-performance humidity sensors based on SnO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites coated on porous graphene electrodes

This study proposes the synthesis of SnO2/Ti3C2Tx composites on porous graphene electrodes (PGEs) for high-performance humidity sensors. In the heterojunction structure of SnO2/Ti3C2Tx composites, SnO2 nanoparticles prevented the layered structure of Ti3C2Tx to collapse and restack. Moreover, the high specific surface area of the SnO2/Ti3C2Tx composites provided more adsorption sites that improved their response. Porous graphene was fabricated by a fiber laser-induced process on the polyimide film as an electrode layer for flexible humidity sensors. The characteristics of the SnO2/Ti3C2Tx composites and PGEs were examined and investigated. SnO2/Ti3C2Tx composites were drop-cast on PGEs to fabricate the humidity sensor. Furthermore, the response of humidity sensors was tested in various RHs. The performance of the proposed humidity sensor demonstrated a wide detection range of 11 - 97% RH, low hysteresis of 2.8% RH, low response/recovery times of 14/49 s, high sensitivity of 862.19 kΩ/%RH, excellent long-time stability and repeatability, and good flexibility. In the future, the proposed sensor can be widely applied in human respiration monitoring, non-contact switch, and detection of volatile organic compounds.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy-Based Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are a major class of environmental pollutants hazardous to human health, but also highly relevant in other fields including early disease diagnostics and organoleptic perception of aliments. Therefore, accurate analysis of VOC is essential, and a need for new analytical methods is witnessed for rapid on-site detection without complex sample preparation. Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) offers a rapidly developing versatile analytical platform for the portable detection of chemical species. Nonetheless, the need for efficient docking of target analytes at the metallic surface significantly narrows the applicability of SERS. This limitation can be circumvented by interfacing the sensor surface with Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF). These materials featuring chemical and structural versatility can efficiently pre-concentrate low molecular weight species such as VOC through their ordered porous structure. This review presents recent trends in the development of MOF-based SERS substrates with a focus on elucidating respective design rules for maximizing analytical performance. An overview of the status of the detection of harmful VOC is discussed in the context of industrial and environmental monitoring. In addition, a survey of the analysis of VOC biomarkers for medical diagnosis and emerging applications in aroma and flavor profiling is included.

Room temperature detection of n-butanol Ce-doped MOF:ZnO sensor under UV activation

Being one of toxic and flammable volatile organic compounds (VOC), n-butanol has brought about many potential health risks, there is an urgent demand for highly sensitive detection techniques to monitor its concentration in occupational environments and the air. In this paper, Ce-doped MOF:ZnO sensors under UV activation for room-temperature detection of n-butanol were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and systemically characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, and XPS. The sensitive performances were evaluated by the use of a WS-30A gas sensor measurement system. The results showed that Ce doping has significantly enhanced the sensitivity of the MOF:ZnO sensors, and the response value of the 0.08 % Ce-doped ZnO sensor has achieved to 397.30, which was 9.32 times higher than that of the pristine MOF:ZnO. And the response and recovery times were 17 and 117 s respectively, demonstrating a speedy detection capability. In addition, the sensor gained excellent stability and reproducibility with special selectivity for n-butanol. The comprehensive achievements of this research would be promising to promote the development of volatile organic compound detection technology and beneficial to the well application in the fields of environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and public health.

Polyphenylene oxide based lossy mode resonance fiber sensor for the detection of volatile organic and inorganic compounds

This study presents the fabrication and characterization of a fiber optic gas sensor based on Lossy Mode Resonances (LMR). For the first time to our knowledge, a nanosized coating of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) is deposited on a cladding removed multimode silica fiber, serving both as the LMR supporting coating and sensitive overlay. The device exhibits a notable sensitivity of 2500 nm/RIU when immersed in glycerol-water based solutions. For gas detection, the PPO-based LMR device is exposed to varying concentrations of different volatile organic and inorganic compounds, including two alcohols (methanol and ethanol) and ammonia. The sensor demonstrates similar responses to methanol and ethanol gases with a sensitivity of about 0.56 nm/ppm and sensitivity of 0.25 nm/ppm to ammonia in the concentration range of 2.5–37.5 ppm, achieving limits of detection of a few ppm. To comprehensively evaluate the sensor performance, the investigation is also focused on the repeatability, reversibility, response times, as well as cross sensitivity to temperature and relative humidity.

Computational study of pure and Lithium decorated bismuthene for detection of VOCs

To meet the crucial need for VOC detection, we propose a nanosensor based on bismuthene, employing density functional theory calculations. This nano-sensor aims to detect specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in human breath, including acetone (C3H6O), ethanol (C2H6O), methanol (CH3OH), formaldehyde (CH2O), and toluene (C7H8), which serve as potential biomarkers for identifying physiological disorders. Additionally, we investigate how carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O), common in exhaled breath, interact with bismuthene as likely interfering species. Notably, toluene exhibited higher adsorption energy with pure and Li-decorated bismuthene. The favorable adsorption and desorption performance of bismuthene with molecules such as formaldehyde, methanol, and acetone at near-ambient temperatures suggest its suitability as a VOCs sensor with simple operational conditions. The density of states, charge analysis, adsorption properties, sensitivity, conductivity, selectivity, and recovery time have been calculated and discussed. Our results highlight Bismuthene’s potential as an efficient nano-sensor for detecting VOCs associated with pulmonary malignancies.

Integrated Mixed Potential Gas Sensor with Efficient Structure for Discriminative Volatile Organic Compounds Detection.

Amid growing interest in the precise detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial field, the demand for highly effective gas sensors is at an all-time high. However, traditional sensors with their classic single-output signal, bulky and complex integrated structure when forming array often involve complicated technology and high cost, limiting their widespread adoption. Here, this study introduces a novel approach, employing an integrated YSZ-based (YSZ: yttria-stabilized zirconia) mixed potential sensor equipped with a triple-sensing electrode array, to efficiently detect and differentiate six types of VOCs gases. This innovative sensor integrates NiSb2O6, CuSb2O6, and MgSb2O6 sensing electrodes (SEs), which are sensitive to pentane, isoprene, n-propanol, acetone, acetic acid, and formaldehyde gases. Through feature engineering based on intuitive spike-based response values, it accentuates the distinct characteristics of every gas. Eventually, an average classification accuracy of 98.8% and an overall R-squared error (R2) of 99.3% for concentration regression toward six target gases can be achieved, showcasing the potential to quantitatively distinguish between industrial hazardous VOCs gases.

Unveiling Colorectal Cancer Biomarkers: Harnessing Biosensor Technology for Volatile Organic Compound Detection.

Conventional screening options for colorectal cancer (CRC) detection are mainly direct visualization and invasive methods including colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy, which must be performed in a clinical setting and may be linked to adverse effects for some patients. Non-invasive CRC diagnostic tests such as computed tomography colonography and stool tests are either too costly or less reliable than invasive ones. On the other hand, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are potentially ideal non-invasive biomarkers for CRC detection and monitoring. The present review is a comprehensive presentation of the current state-of-the-art VOC-based CRC diagnostics, with a specific focus on recent advancements in biosensor design and application. Among them, breath-based chromatography pattern analysis and sampling techniques are overviewed, along with nanoparticle-based optical and electrochemical biosensor approaches. Limitations of the currently available technologies are also discussed with an outlook for improvement in combination with big data analytics and advanced instrumentation, as well as expanding the scope and specificity of CRC-related volatile biomarkers.

A luminescent binuclear Cu(I) complex constructed by bipyridine, TD-DFT calculation, and its fluorescent sensing properties for VOCs

The design and research of materials with strong luminescence and fluorescence sensing for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of great significance and challenge. Herein, we report a binuclear Cu(I) complex, [Cu2(POP)2(MeCN)2(4,4′-bipy)](PF6)2 (2), which is synthesized rationally through a substitution reaction between complex [Cu(POP)(4-PBO)(MeCN)](PF6) (1) and 4,4′-bipy lignand (POP is bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether, 4,4′-bipy is bipyridine, 4-PBO is 2-(4′-pyridyl)-benzoxazole). The complex 2 was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as an isolated binuclear structure constructed by a bridged 4,4′-bipy ligand. Under UV irradiation, both the powder and doped thin film of 1 and 2 exhibit broadband photoluminescence emission. The TD-DFT calculation reveals the details of the electronic transitions corresponding to the light absorption and emission of the two complexes, and also illustrates that the improved luminescence of 2 compared to 1 is due to the T1 excited state transforms from a localized transition to a charge transfer transition similar to the S1 excited state and the extremely small energy gap ΔE(S1-T1) value of 0.09 eV (2). Based on these complexes, fluorescent test strips were developed. It is gratifying to find that the test strip based 2 shows a distinguishable fluorescence response behavior to a variety of VOCs. Especially, the test strip showed a rapid quenching fluorescence response to acetophenone, and a rapid quenching followed by rapid enhancement fluorescence response to acetonitrile. Therefore, it can be used for rapid and highly selective fluorescence sensing detection of acetonitrile and acetophenone.

Facile Preparation of TiO2NTs/Au@MOF Nanocomposites for High-Sensitivity SERS Sensing of Gaseous VOC.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising and highly sensitive molecular fingerprint detection technology. However, the development of SERS nanocomposites that are label-free, highly sensitive, selective, stable, and reusable for gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection remains a challenge. Here, we report a novel TiO2NTs/AuNPs@ZIF-8 nanocomposite for the ultrasensitive SERS detection of VOCs. The three-dimensional TiO2 nanotube structure with a large specific surface area provides abundant sites for the loading of Au NPs, which possess excellent local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects, further leading to the formation of a large number of SERS active hotspots. The externally wrapped porous MOF structure adsorbs more gaseous VOC molecules onto the noble metal surface. Under the synergistic mechanism of physical and chemical enhancement, a better SERS enhancement effect can be achieved. By optimizing experimental conditions, the SERS detection limit for acetophenone, a common exhaled VOC, is as low as 10-11 M. And the relative standard deviation of SERS signal intensity from different points on the same nanocomposite surface is 4.7%. The acetophenone gas achieves a 1 min response and the signal reaches stability in 4 min. Under UV irradiation, the surface-adsorbed acetophenone can be completely degraded within 40 min. The experimental results demonstrate that this nanocomposite has good detection sensitivity, repeatability, selectivity, response speed, and reusability, making it a promising sensor for gaseous VOCs.

Advancements in miniaturized infrared spectroscopic-based volatile organic compound sensors: A systematic review

The global trends of urbanization and industrialization have given rise to critical environmental and air pollution issues that often receive insufficient attention. Among the myriad pollution sources, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) stand out as a primary cluster, posing a significant threat to human society. Addressing VOCs emissions requires an effective mitigation action plan, placing technological development, especially in detection, at the forefront. Photonic sensing technologies rooted in the infrared (IR) light and matter interaction mechanism offer nondestructive, fast-response, sensitive, and selective chemical measurements, making them a promising solution for VOC detection. Recent strides in nanofabrication processes have facilitated the development of miniaturized photonic devices and thus sparked growing interest in the creation of low-cost, highly selective, sensitive, and fast-response IR optical sensors for VOC detection. This review work thus serves a timely need to provide the community a comprehensive understanding of the state of the art in this field and illuminate the path forward in addressing the pressing issue of VOC pollution.

Synthesis of ZnO@Fe2O3 microflowers with enhanced performance in volatile organic compound detection

Metal-oxide semiconductor is widely applied in gas sensor for volatile organic compound detection. However, these sensors usually exhibit poor selectivity and inferior sensitivity. Here, ZnO@Fe2O3 microflowers were synthesized using FeOOH microflowers as precursors via a simple solution reaction route, followed by heat treatment. The ZnO@Fe2O3 microflowers were characterized using a series of techniques, and their sensing responses to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were evaluated in comparison with those of pristine Fe2O3. The ZnO@Fe2O3 microflower sensor exhibited better responses to several gases, especially acetone, with a response of 74.3 towards 100 ppm acetone, which is 2.85 times higher than that of the Fe2O3 microflower sensor. The sensor also presented high selectivity, reproducibility, and stability in sensing different VOCs. The large specific surface area, heterostructure, favorable hierarchical flower-like nanostructure assembled by the nanosheets, and high porosity of the ZnO@Fe2O3 microflowers contributed to its enhanced gas-sensing responses. Overall, this synthetic strategy for fabricating flower-like ZnO@Fe2O3 nanostructures can be widely applied.

Non-invasive VOCs detection to monitor the gut microbiota metabolism in-vitro

This work implemented a non-invasive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) monitoring approach to study how food components are metabolised by the gut microbiota in-vitro. The fermentability of a model food matrix rich in dietary fibre (oat bran), and a pure prebiotic (inulin), added to a minimal gut medium was compared by looking at global changes in the volatilome. The substrates were incubated with a stabilised human faecal inoculum over a 24-h period, and VOCs were monitored without interfering with biological processes. The fermentation was performed in nitrogen-filled vials, with controlled temperature, and tracked by automated headspace-solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. To understand the molecular patterns over time, we applied a multivariate longitudinal statistical framework: repeated measurements—ANOVA simultaneous component analysis. The methodology was able to discriminate the studied groups by looking at VOCs temporal profiles. The volatilome showed a time-dependency that was more distinct after 12 h. Short to medium-chain fatty acids showed increased peak intensities, mainly for oat bran and for inulin, but with different kinetics. At the same time, alcohols, aldehydes, and esters showed distinct trends with discriminatory power. The proposed approach can be applied to study the intertwined pathways of gut microbiota food components interaction in-vitro.

ZIF-8-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance and Fabry-Pérot Sensors for Volatile Organic Compounds.

This work explores the use of ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework (MOF) material, for its use in the optical detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Fabry-Pérot and surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based sensors. The experiments have been carried out with ethanol (EtOH) and show response times as low as 30 s under VOC-saturated atmospheres, and the estimated limit of detection is below 4000 ppm for both sensor types. The selectivity towards other VOCs is relatively poor, although the dynamics of adsorption/desorption differ for each VOC and could be used for selectivity purposes. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8 has been confirmed and the fabricated sensors are insensitive to this compound, which is a very attractive result for its practical use in gas sensing devices.

Development of an organ-on-chip model for the detection of volatile organic compounds as potential biomarkers of tumour progression

Early detection of tumours remains a significant challenge due to their invasive nature and the limitations of current monitoring techniques. Liquid biopsies have emerged as a minimally invasive diagnostic approach, wherein volatile organic compounds (VOCs) show potential as compelling candidates. However, distinguishing tumour-specific VOCs is difficult due to the presence of gases from non-tumour tissues and environmental factors. Therefore, it is essential to develop preclinical models that accurately mimic the intricate tumour microenvironment to induce cellular metabolic changes and secretion of tumour-associated VOCs. In this study, a microfluidic device was used to recreate the ischaemic environment within solid tumours for the detection of tumour-derived VOCs. The system represents a significant advance in understanding the role of VOCs as biomarkers for early tumour detection and holds the potential to improve patient prognosis; particularly for inaccessible and rapidly progressing tumours such as glioblastoma.

Detection of volatile organic compounds as new paradigm to accelerate antimicrobial susceptibility testing: performance evaluation of VITEK® REVEAL™.

The measurement of VOCs release in the headspace of a bacterial culture represents a new approach to rapidly assess antimicrobial susceptibility. Herein, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of the VITEK® REVEAL™ system directly from a collection of Gram-negative positive blood cultures. One hundred and twenty-eight positive blood cultures were included in the analysis (Enterobacterales, n = 95; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, n = 21; Acinetobacter baumannii complex, n = 12). Samples were processed using VITEK® REVEAL™ according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and MICs of 22 antimicrobials were compared with those obtained using reference methods. Categorical agreement (CA), essential agreement (EA) and categorical errors were calculated. Overall, 2220 strain/antibiotic pair combinations were analysed. Of these, most were classified as resistant by reference antimicrobial susceptibility testing (1091/2220; 48.7%). The overall CA and EA were 97.6% and 97.7%, respectively. CA ranged from 97.5% in Enterobacterales to 97.9% in both P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii complex. The overall number of categorical discrepancies were: 18 very major errors (1.6%), 13 major errors (1.2%) and 22 minor errors (2.4%). EA ranged from 95.2% in P. aeruginosa to 98.1% in Enterobacterales. Screening test for ESBL phenotype was positive, indeterminate and negative in 13.7%, 32.6% and 27.4% of Enterobacterales isolates tested by both VITEK® REVEAL™ and the reference method, showing 100% CA. VITEK® REVEAL™ represents a reliable tool to obtain antimicrobial susceptibility results of the main Gram-negative species directly from positive blood cultures with time to results of less than 8 h.

Nanofibrous Conductive Sensor for Limonene: One-Step Synthesis via Electrospinning and Molecular Imprinting.

Detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from different plant species and their organs can provide valuable information about plant health and environmental factors that affect them. For example, limonene emission can be a biomarker to monitor plant health and detect stress. Traditional methods for VOC detection encounter challenges, prompting the proposal of novel approaches. In this study, we proposed integrating electrospinning, molecular imprinting, and conductive nanofibers to fabricate limonene sensors. In detail, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) served here as fiber and cavity formers, respectively, with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) enhancing conductivity. We developed one-step monolithic molecularly imprinted fibers, where S(-)-limonene was the target molecule, using an electrospinning technique. The functional cavities were fixed using the UV curing method, followed by a target molecule washing. This procedure enabled the creation of recognition sites for limonene within the nanofiber matrix, enhancing sensor performance and streamlining manufacturing. Humidity was crucial for sensor working, with optimal conditions at about 50% RH. The sensors rapidly responded to S(-)-limonene, reaching a plateau within 200 s. Enhancing fiber density improved sensor performance, resulting in a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 137 ppb. However, excessive fiber density decreased accessibility to active sites, thus reducing sensitivity. Remarkably, the thinnest mat on the fibrous sensors created provided the highest selectivity to limonene (Selectivity Index: 72%) compared with other VOCs, such as EtOH (used as a solvent in nanofiber development), aromatic compounds (toluene), and two other monoterpenes (α-pinene and linalool) with similar structures. These findings underscored the potential of the proposed integrated approach for selective VOC detection in applications such as precision agriculture and environmental monitoring.

Fiber Optic Sensor Coated with Multiple Layers of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Nanosheets (BNNS) for the Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds.

Nowadays, volatile organic compound (VOC) detection is imperative to ensure environmental safety in industry and indoor environments, as well as to monitor human health in medical diagnosis. Gas sensors with the best sensor response, selectivity, and stability are in high demand. Simultaneously, the advancement of nanotechnology facilitates novel nanomaterial-based gas sensors with superior sensor characteristics and low power consumption. Recently, boron nitride, a 2D material, has emerged as an excellent candidate for gas sensing and demonstrated exceptional sensing characteristics for new-generation gas sensing devices. Herein, ultrathin porous boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) with large lateral sizes were synthesized using a facile synthesis approach, and their material characteristics were investigated utilizing a variety of analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. A BNNS-coated cladding-modified fiber optic sensor (FOS) probe was prepared and employed for VOC (ammonia, ethanol, and acetone) sensing across concentrations varying from 0 to 300 ppm. The BNNSs-coated FOS demonstrated better selectivity toward 300 ppm ammonia, and specifically annealed BNNSs displayed a maximum sensor response of 55% along with a response/recovery times of 15 s/34 s compared to its counterparts. The superior ammonia sensing performances could be attributed to the formation of ultrathin nanosheets and a porous surface with slit-like features in hexagonal boron nitride.

Research Progress of Using Canine Olfactory Search for Human Remains.

In the process of murder investigation, it is of great significance to find the discarded and buried human remains accurately. The main methods of searching for human remains include human visual search, aerial detection, geophysical technology, remote imaging technology and canine olfactory search technique. Canine olfactory search for human remains is a recognized time-effective and non-invasive search method, making dogs the most valuable search tool in forensic investigation. By systematically reviewing and summarizing relevant literature, and based on the theory of volatile organic compound produced by the decomposition of human remains, this paper explores the basic principle of the canine olfactory search technique for human remains. This paper also reviews the application of training canine search technique for human remains in forensic investigation by using human blood, tissue, cadaver putrefying fluid and odor substitutes as sniffing sources. The application prospect of canine olfactory search for human remains was prospected from the perspectives of detection of volatile organic compound during cadaver decay, development of odor substitutes and adsorption devices, and technology tactics used in canine training and use, to provide references for the relevant research of canine olfactory search for human remains in China.

Facile synthesis of porous Au-decorated SnO2 microflowers with abundant oxygen vacancies for trace VOCs detection

Hierarchical Au-decorated SnO2 (Au@SnO2) microflowers with a porous structure were successfully synthesized. The preparation process involves in a hydrothermal method, calcination treatment, as well as modification. The hierarchical structure consisted of a large number of porous, uniform nanosheets. Excellent gas-sensing performances were demonstrated by the gas sensors fabricated using Au@SnO2 microflowers, for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In particular, for the accurate and fast detection of formaldehyde, the 2%Au-decorated SnO2 microflowers sensors showed a strong sensing response (76.5) for formaldehyde (100 ppm) at 140 °C, approximately three times higher than that (28.2) observed for the pure porous SnO2 microflowers. The response and recovery times (10 s/16 s) were shorter than those (12 s/25 s) of the pure SnO2, respectively. The detection limit for the 2%Au@SnO2 sensor was 19.03 ppb. The sensing mechanism of Au@SnO2 sensors was also investigated. Favorable porous 3-dimensional structure, high catalytic activity, and electron sensitization effect of Au nanoparticles (NPs) improved the gas-sensing performance. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of Au NPs was maximized due to their uniform distribution on the surface of each porous SnO2 nanosheet. The Au-decorated SnO2 microflowers sensors have great potential for the accurate, fast, and highly sensitive response detection of formaldehyde gas.
