Synergistic Removal of Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Constructed Wetlands Enhanced by Sponge Iron

Insufficient denitrification and limited phosphorus uptake hinder nitrogen and phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands (CWs). Sponge iron is a promising material for the removal of phosphorus and nitrogen because of its strong reducing power, high electronegativity, and inexpensive cost. The influence of factors including initial solution pH, dosage, and the Fe/C ratio was investigated. A vertical flow CW with sponge iron (CW-I) was established, and a traditional gravel bed (CW-G) was used as a control group. The kinetic analysis demonstrated that for both nitrogen and phosphorus, pseudo-second-order kinetics were superior. The theoretical adsorption capacities of sponge iron for nitrate (NO3−-N) and phosphate (PO43−-P) were 1294.5 mg/kg and 583.6 mg/kg, respectively. Under different hydraulic retention times (HRT), CW-I had better total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies (6.08–15.18% and 5.00–20.67%, respectively) than CW-G. The enhancing effect of sponge iron on nitrogen and phosphorus removal was best when HRT was 48 h. The increase in HRT improved not only the nitrogen and phosphorus removal effects of CWs but also the reduction capacity of iron and the phosphorus removal effect. The main mechanisms of synergistic nitrogen and phosphorus removal were chemical reduction, ion exchange, electrostatic adsorption, and precipitation formation.

New insights for simultaneous nutrient removal enhancement and greenhouse gas emissions reduction of constructed wetland by optimizing its redox environment through manganese oxide addition

Manganese oxide (MnOx) is receiving increased interest in the nutrient removal of constructed wetlands (CWs); however, its service effectiveness for simultaneous greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction is still vague. In this study, three vertical flow CWs, i.e., volcanics (CCW), manganese sand uniformly mixing with volcanics (Mn-CW) and MnOx doped volcanics (MnV-CW), were constructed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of MnOx on nutrient removal enhancement and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction. The results showed that the MnOx doped volcanics optimized the oxidation–reduction potential surrounding the substrate (-164.0 ∼ +141.1 mv), and resulted in the lowest GHG emissions (CO2-equivalent) from MnV-CW, 16.8–36.5 % lower than that of Mn-CW and CCW. This was mainly ascribed to mitigation of N2O produced during the NO3−-N reduction process, according to results of 15N stable isotope labeling. Analysis of the microbial community structure revealed that due to the optimized redox conditions through chemical doping of MnOx on volcanics, the abundance of microbe involved in denitrification and Mn-oxidizing process in the MnV-CW was significantly increased at genus level, which led to a higher Mn cycling efficiency between biogenic MnOx and Mn2+, and enhanced denitrification efficiency and N2O emission reduction. This study would help to understand and provide a preferable reference for future applications for manganese-based CW.

Biochar from co-pyrolysis of biological sludge and sawdust in comparison with the conventional filling media of vertical-flow constructed wetlands for the treatment of domestic-textile wastewater.

A biochar from co-pyrolysis of a mixture of sawdust and biological sludge (70/30, w/w), providing a high environmental compatibility in terms of water leachable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and inorganic elements, together with a remarkable surface area (389 m2/g), was integrated into laboratory-scale vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VF-CWs), planted with Phragmites australis and unplanted. Biochar-filled VF-CWs have been tested for 8 months for the refining of effluents from the tertiary clariflocculation stage of a wastewater treatment plant operating in a mixed domestic-industrial textile context, in comparison with systems filled with gravel. VF-CW influents and effluents were monitored for chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, and absorbance values at 254 and 420 nm, the latter as rapid and reliable screening parameters of the removal of organic micropollutants containing aromatic moieties and/or chromophores. Biochar-based systems provided a statistically significant improvement in COD (Δ = 22%) and ammonia (Δ = 35%) removal, as well as in the reduction of UV-Vis absorbance values (Δ = 32-34% and Δ = 28% for 254 and 420 nm, respectively), compared to gravel-filled microcosms. The higher removal of organic was mainly attributed to the well-known adsorption properties of biochars, while for nitrogen the biological mechanisms seem to play a predominant role.

Application of New Filling Material Based on Combined Heat and Power Waste for Sewage Treatment in Constructed Wetlands.

The filling of constructed wetlands (CWs) affects the efficiency of sewage treatment and proper operation. Mineral aggregates are most often used as filling materials. Significant environmental burdens from mineral mining operations justify the search for waste fill. This study aimed to determine the possibility of increasing the efficiency of CW by using a Certyd aggregate as a new filling. Certyd is produced in the sintering process of coal ash, a waste from combined heat and power (CHP) plant operation. Comprehensive two-year studies were conducted using two real-scale subsurface vertical flow (SS VF) CWs supplied with domestic sewage. One bed was filled with a Certyd and the other was filled with appropriate fractions of a mineral aggregate. Both beds worked in parallel, and to compare their effectiveness, account seasonality was taken into account. The SS-VF Certyd-filled bed achieved an average efficiency of 88.0% for biological oxygen demand (BOD5), 80.2% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 80.4% for suspended solids (SSs), 80.2 for ammonia nitrogen (N-NH4), 72.2% for total nitrogen (TN), and 55.3% for total phosphorus (TP), while the gravel-filled bed achieved 84.5%, 77.0%, 86.9%, 74.2%, 69.4%, and 57.8% for the whole research period, respectively. A higher effect of the removed unit load was achieved in the bed filled with Certyd (36.2 g BOD5 m-2 d-1, 50.0 g COD m-2 d-1, 5.88 g SS m-2 d-1, 7.1 g TN m-2 d-1, 7.9 g N-NH4 m-2 d-1, 0.79 g TP m-2 d-1) compared to the gravel-filled bed (34.7 g BOD5 m-2 d-1, 47.0 g COD, 6.35 g SS m-2 d-1, 6.9 g TN m-2 d-1, 7.3 g m-2 d-1 N-NH4, 0.83 g TP m-2 d-1).

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi enhanced the drinking water treatment residue-based vertical flow constructed wetlands on the purification of arsenic-containing wastewater

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid that poses a potential risk to the environment and human health. In this study, drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) and ceramsite-based vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) were built to purify As-containing wastewater. As a method of bioaugmentation, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was inoculated to Pteris vittata roots to enhance the As removal of the VFCWs. The results showed that the As removal rates reached 87.82–94.29% (DWTR) and 33.28–58.66% (ceramsite). DWTR and P. vittata contributed 64.33–72.07% and 7.57–29% to the removal of As, while AMF inoculation intensified the As accumulation effect of P. vittata. Proteobacteria, the main As3+ oxidizing bacteria in the aquatic systems, dominated the microbial community, occupying 72.41 ± 7.76%. AMF inoculation increased As-related functional genes abundance in DWTR-based wetlands and provided a reliable means of arsenic resistance in wetlands. These findings indicated that the DWTR-based VFCWs with AMF inoculated P. vittata had a great purification effect on As-containing wastewater, providing a theoretical basis for the application of DWTR and AMF for As removal in constructed wetlands.

Impact analysis of hydraulic loading rate and antibiotics on hybrid constructed wetland systems: Insight into the response to decontamination performance and environmental-associated microbiota

Hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) are a promising solution for water ecology and environmental treatment, not only for conventional types of water pollution but also for antibiotics. Among the critical parameters for wetlands, the hydraulic loading rate (HLR) is especially important given the challenges of antibiotics treatment and frequent extreme rainfall. To investigate the removal performance of different HLRs on nutrients and antibiotics, as well as the response of antibiotics to nutrient removal, and the impact of HLRs on microbial communities, new HCWs with vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) and floating constructed wetlands (FCWs) in series were built. The results of the study showed that: (1) HCWs are highly effective in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4+−N, NO2−−N, and total phosphorus (TP) at low HLR (L_HLR), with removal efficiencies as high as 97.8%, 99.6%, 100%, and 80.5%. However, high HLR (H_HLR) reduced their removal efficiencies; (2) The average removal efficiency of fluoroquinolones (FQs) under different HLRs was consistently high, at 99.9%, while the average removal efficiency of macrolides (MLs) was 96.3% (L_HLR) and 88.4% (H_HLR). The removal efficiency of sulfonamides (SAs) was susceptible to HLRs, and the removal of antibiotics occurred mainly in the rhizosphere zone of wetland; (3) High concentrations of antibiotics in HCWs were found to inhibit and poison plant growth and to reduce the removal efficiency of TP by 12%. However, they had a minor effect on the removal efficiency of carbon and nitrogen nutrients; (4) H_HLR altered the diversity and abundance of microbial communities in different compartments of the wetland and also reduced the relative abundance of Bacillus, Hydrogenophaga, Nakamurella, Denitratisoma and Acidovorax genera, which are involved in denitrification and phosphorus removal processes. This alteration in microbial communities was one of the main reasons for the reduced performance of nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

Biodegradation and sorption of nutrients and endocrine disruptors in a novel concrete-based substrate in vertical-flow constructed wetlands

Removing phosphorus and endocrine-disruptors (EDC) is still challenging for low-cost sewage treatment systems. This study investigated the efficiency of three vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) vegetated with Eichhornia crassipes onto red clay (CW-RC), autoclaved aerated concrete (CW-AC), and composite from the chemical activation of autoclaved aerated concrete with white cement (CW-AAC) in the removal of organic matter, nutrients, and estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol. The novelty aspect of this study is related to selecting these clay and cementitious-based materials in removing endocrine disruptors and nutrients in VFCW. The subsurface VFCW were operated in sequencing-batch mode (cycles of 48-48-72 h), treating synthetic wastewater for 308 days. The operation consisted of Stages I and II, different by adding EDC in Stage II. The presence of EDC increased the competition for dissolved oxygen (DO) and reduced the active sites available for adsorption, diminishing the removal efficiencies of TKN and TAN and total phosphorus in the systems. CW-RC showed a significant increase in COD removal from 65% to 91%, while CW-AC and CW-AAC maintained stable COD removal (84%–82% and 78%–81%, respectively). Overall, the substrates proved effective in removing EDC, with CW-AC and CW-AAC achieving >60% of removal. Bacteria Candidatus Brocadia and Candidatus Jettenia, responsible for carrying out the Anammox process, were identified in assessing the microbial community structure. According to the mass balance analysis, adsorption is the main mechanism for removing TP in CW-AC and CW-AAC, while other losses were predominant in CW-RC. Conversely, for TN removal, the adsorption is more representative in CW-RC, and the different metabolic routes of microorganisms, biofilm assimilation, and partial ammonia volatilization in CW-AC and CW-AAC. The results suggest that the composite AAC is the most suitable material for enhancing the simultaneous removal of organic matter, nutrients, and EDC in VFCW under the evaluated operational conditions.

Performance evaluation and microbial profiling of integrated vertical flow constructed wetland (IVFCW) for simultaneous treatment of domestic and pulp and paper industry waste water

The present study demonstrates the potential of an integrated vertical flow-constructed wetland (IVFCW) for simultaneously treating black liquor and domestic wastewater. IVFCW was operated and monitored for 12 samples with the frequency of one sample per week with the following specifications viz,4 L of wastewater, a blend of 1:1 of pulp and paper industry effluent (black liquor BL), and domestic wastewater, was fed daily in a continuous mode with organic loading rate (OLR) of 1230 mg COD/L-Day, at a temperature range of 40-45℃ (natural temperature of the workstation). Valves controlled each chamber's hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 days and flow rate of 10 mL/minute. The IVFCW showed remarkable efficiency in removing various pollutants, including total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS), by 100 % and 83 %, respectively, and organic contaminants such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) by 80 % and 81 %, respectively. Moreover, the IVFCW efficiently reduced nutrients such as sulfates (SO₄-2), phosphates (PO₄-3), and total nitrogen by about 81 %, 63 %, and 61 %, respectively. The treatment also led to the reduction of lignin content by 83 %. Microbiological analysis revealed a significant reduction in fecal coliforms, and microbial profiling of Typha latifolia roots confirmed the presence of bacteria involved in lignin degradation. Seed germination and seedling survival were found to be negativelyaffected by untreated wastewater in a phytotoxicity study, suggesting that the wastewater's toxic chemicals could be harmful to plant life.This study highlights the effectiveness of IVFCW as a sustainable, economically viable, and resilient wastewater treatment system for mitigating environmental concerns related to the release of untreated wastewater.

Application of the Monte-Carlo Method to Assess the Operational Reliability of a Household-Constructed Wetland with Vertical Flow: A Case Study in Poland

The objective of this study was to model the operation of a vertical-flow constructed wetland (VF-CW) for domestic wastewater, using Monte-Carlo simulations and selected probability distributions of various random variables. The analysis was based on collected wastewater quality data, including the values of the pollutant indicators BOD5 (biochemical oxygen demand), CODCr (chemical oxygen demand), and TSS (total suspended solids), in the 2017–2020 period. Anderson–Darling (A–D) statistics were applied to assess the fit of the theoretical distributions to the empirical distributions of the random variables under study. The selection of the best-fitting statistical distributions was determined using the percentage deviation (PBIAS) criterion. Based on the analyses that were performed, the best-fitting statistical distributions for the pollution indicators of the raw wastewater were the generalised extreme value distribution for BOD5, the Gaussian distribution for CODCr, and the log-normal distribution for TSS. For treated effluent, the log-normal distribution was the best fit for BOD5 and CODCr; the semi-normal distribution, for TSS. The new data generated using the Monte-Carlo method allowed the reliability of the VF-CW operation to be assessed by determining the reliability indices, i.e., the average efficiency of the removal of pollutants (η), the technological efficiency index (R), the reliability index (CR), and the risk index of the negative control of the sewage treatment plant operation (Re). The obtained results indicate that only in the case of CODCr, the analysed treatment facility may fail to meet the requirements related to the reduction of organic pollutants to the required level, which is evidenced by the values of the indicators CR = 1.10, R = 0.49, and η = 0.82. In addition, the risk index of the negative operation of the facility (Re) assumes a value of 1, which indicates that during the period of its operation, the VF-CW system will not operate with the required efficiency in relation to this indicator. The novelty of this work is the implementation of the indicated mathematical simulation methods for analysing the reliability of the operation of the domestic wastewater treatment facility.

Adding Corbicula fluminea altered the effect of plant species diversity on greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen removal from constructed wetlands in the low-temperature season

Plant species diversity is crucial in greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen removal from constructed wetlands (CWs). However, previous studies have overlooked the impact of benthos on cumulative greenhouse gas emissions during the low-temperature season in CWs. In this study, we established 66 vertical flow CWs with three levels of species richness (1, 2, and 4 species) and eleven species compositions. The Corbicula fluminea was added or not added at each diversity level and monitored greenhouse gas emissions and effluent nitrogen concentration. Our findings indicated that (1) in microcosms without C. fluminea, high species richness significantly increased effluent nitrogen concentrations (NO3−-N, NH4+-N, and TIN), but plant species richness did not affect cumulative CH4, N2O, and CO2 emissions. The presence of Hemerocallis fulva significantly increased cumulative CO2 emissions, while the presence of Iris tectorum significantly increased effluent nitrogen (NO3−-N and TIN) concentrations and cumulative N2O emissions; (2) in microcosms with C. fluminea, the lowest cumulative CH4 emissions occurred when there were two species, but plant species richness did not affect cumulative CO2 and N2O emissions. The presence of H. fulva significantly increased cumulative CH4 emissions, while the presence of Reineckea carnea significantly increased effluent nitrogen (NO3−-N, NH4+- N, TIN) concentrations; (3) at the same diversity level, the addition of C. fluminea significantly increased cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions, as well as effluent nitrogen concentrations. These results demonstrate that C. fluminea alters the effect of plant species diversity on cumulative greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen removal from CWs during the low-temperature season. We recommend using a two-species mixture to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, we caution against using plant compositions with H. fulva or I. tectorum for effective wastewater treatment and greenhouse gas reduction in CWs.

The impact of external plant carbon sources on nitrogen removal and microbial community structure in vertical flow constructed wetlands

The present study was developed to explore nitrogen removal performance and associated microbial mechanisms of action in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) when using external carbon sources. These analyses ultimately revealed that alkali-soaked Phragmites australis (P. australis) could serve as an effective plant carbon source, exhibiting the lower levels of total nitrogen (TN) release and the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) of all tested carbon sources. Nitrogen removal efficiency improved following the addition of plant carbon sources, and under carbon/nitrogen (C/N) rations of 2, 4, 5, and 7, the VFCW system was able to remove 43.69%–75.76% TN, with the highest removal rate being observed at a C/N of 5. The abundance of denitrifying microorganisms such as Thiobaillus and Halomonas were also more enriched in VFCW1 than VFCW0, with stronger correlations in the microbial network community. A qPCR approach was used to analyze functional genes involved in denitrification, revealing that the addition of plant carbon sources was associated with increases in total gene abundance and the abundance of the denitrifying gene nirS, whereas no corresponding increase in amoA or nxrA abundance was observed. Higher total gene, amoA, and nxrA abundance were observed in the upper levels of these VFCW systems as compared to the lower layers, whereas nirS exhibited the opposite abundance pattern. Overall, these findings suggested that short-range denitrification is likely to be the primary denitrification process active in this VFCW system.

Vertically constructed wetlands for greywater reuse: Performance analysis of plants

Vertical Flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) are environmentally feasible engineered systems that mimic the functions of natural wetlands. They are alternative engineering systems that are economical, and simple in structure with reduced land area compared to Horizontal Flow Constructed Wetlands (HFCW). Thus provides a sustainable solution for greywater treatment to a considerable extent. However, VFCWs feasibility and plant performance were not tested in the context of Sri Lanka for the greywater treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of household greywater treatment using apilot-scale VFCW and examine the performance characteristics of different types of plants. Three types of plants, the Canna plant (Canna indica), Ferns plant (Matteuccia struthiopteris), and Cattail plant (Typha latifolia) were used as emergent plants and a retention tank was constructed to retain solid particles in the greywater as primary treatment. The experiments were carried out for two months using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) for three replicates. The quality of the influent and effluentwas testedfortnight for a number of water quality parameters. Results revealed that the removal efficiency of contaminants was increased. Cattail plants showed higher removal efficiency for dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrates (NO31-), turbidity, and electrical conductivity. In addition, Canna plants had higher efficiencies for the removal of total dissolved solids (TDS) and phosphates (PO43-). Furthermore, Ferns plants presented higher efficiency only for removing sulphate (SO43-). Conclusively, Cattail plants presented the overall best performance in treating greywater. This can be attributed to the ability of the Cattail's dense fibrous root system to absorb more contaminants from greywater. This research also discussed the importance of microplastic analysis in greywater treatment which is a vital part of the current day research. The results of this study will be helpful to the further advanced research. Furthermore, this methodology can be implemented to other similar plants across the globe irrespective of geographical area.

Optimization of a combined system of vertical flow constructed wetland and solar photo-Fenton for ketoprofen removal in sewage and landfill leachate

Emerging contaminants in the environment are a matter of concern due to their widespread use and continuous disposal without proper treatment. Conventional treatments in sewage treatment plants (STPs) are not able to completely eliminate them, resulting in the presence of these compounds in several environmental matrices. Therefore, exploring and adding technologies to reduce or avoid the disposal of these compounds in the environment is necessary. This study aimed to use the solar photo-Fenton process combined with a partially saturated bottom vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) to remove ketoprofen (KET) from anaerobic effluent (sewage + landfill leachate) post-treated by a real-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The combined constructed wetland + solar photo-Fenton in pH 3.0 (CW + SPF3) and constructed wetland + solar photo-Fenton in pH 6.0 (CW + SPF6) systems showed high efficiency in degrading KET, achieving removal rates of 97% and 95%, respectively. The systems also showed efficiency in removing conventional parameters such as COD, BOD5,20, and turbidity. In addition to having a lower cost, only the combined CW + SPF6 system was able to eliminate toxicity for Artemia sp. and Lactuca sativa (TU < 0.4). The solar photo-Fenton process and constructed wetlands have proven to be compatible technologies. This combination resulted in an innovative and effective method for wastewater treatment systems containing emerging contaminants. The use of new technological arrangements for the treatment of sewage and effluents, such as constructed wetlands (CWs), which are nature-based solutions, and environmentally sustainable advanced solar oxidation processes, establish a NEXUS concept, promoting the circular economy.

Vertical flow constructed wetlands as green facades and gardens for on-site greywater treatment in buildings: Two-year mesocosm study on removal performance

This study focuses on the performance and clogging of vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) planted with climbing ornamentals and ornamental plants for greywater treatment, after two years of operation at mesocosm level. Different substrate (sand, vermiculite) and vegetation (Trachelospermum jasminoides, Lonicera japonica, Callistemon laevis) types were evaluated to determine the optimal removal of pollutants. Results revealed that, during the second year of operation, removal efficiencies of turbidity and COD were significantly higher (1st year: 54–94 %; 71–89 %, 2nd year: 82–98 %; 86–95 %, respectively) for both studied planted substrates, compared to the first year. Moreover, it was found that sand systems from each studied plant as well as from the unplanted systems, were more effective compared to vermiculite for most of the studied parameters (turbidity, TSS, COD, anionic surfactants, pathogens). Sand systems were also quite effective in removing total coliforms (5 log reduction) and Escherichia coli (4 log reduction). At the end of the two-year experiment, all planted systems with sand had significantly higher hydraulic conductivity than the unplanted ones. With reference to evapotranspiration, even though planted systems had significantly higher losses, C. laevis systems demonstrated less water losses than the other vegetated systems. According to the findings, the studied plants managed to continue growing without facing added stress. Therefore, the application of climbing and ornamental plants in VFCWs for greywater treatment in buildings seems a promising option for developing green infrastructures in urban areas and enhancing the removal efficiency of such systems.

A Glance at a Sustainable Solution Using Vertical Constructed Wetland Based on Dewatered Drinking-Water Waste Augmented Nanoparticle Composite Substrate for Wastewater Treatment

The current investigation introduces and demonstrates a credible, economically sound system to remove agrochemical runoff using a vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW). DuPont 1179 carbamate insecticide was applied as a simulating greenhouse crop production controller, which resulted in runoff loaded with DuPont 1179. A novel composite of constructed wetland from an alum sludge conjugate magnetite nanoparticle substrate was applied and supported with gravel as a filtration/adsorption bed in a vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) system. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) augmented with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were employed to characterize the suggested composite substrate. The experimental data showed VFCW to be significant in eliminating DuPont 1179. The isotherm time was explored at 300 min, which corresponded to complete insecticide removal (100%). The operational parameters were located at the natural pH (6.9) of the solution and room temperature (25 °C). The VFCW column was also investigated at various substrate concentrations ranging from 100% to 40% of the composite material supported by a gravel medium, and the existence of composite at a 75% concentration showed the highest yield. The experimental data verified that the adsorption followed the pseudo second-order adsorption kinetic model. Furthermore, according to the isotherm model results, the scheme followed the Langmuir isotherm model. Thus, the presented study is a promising indicator of the possibility of using alum sludge conjugate nanoparticles for the elimination of agrochemicals from wastewater.

The response rule of wetland microorganisms by coupling of partial nitrification process and constructed wetland

In this study, the response rule of wetland microorganisms by coupling of partial nitrification (PN) process and vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) were determined. Coupling of PN effluent and exhaust gas positively affected microbial abundance and community. Results revealed that the microbial community structure in the VFCW was changed. The nitrification and denitrification intensities were promoted and the abundance of functional bacteria related to nitrogen and organic matter removal were increased. In addition, the removal efficiencies of pollutants of VFCW have been significantly improved. The results showed that the System II coupling the PN effluent and intermittent aeration with exhaust gas achieved better removal of NH4+-N (92.61 ± 2.25 %) and TN (70.33 ± 3.61 %) than the System I that only fed PN effluent without exhaust aeration. NO2−-N pollution in PN effluent was eliminated with a removal efficiency of 97.58 ± 1.08 %.

Vertical and Hybrid Constructed Wetlands as a Sustainable Technique to Improve Domestic Wastewater Quality

Developing safer and environmentally friendly methods for wastewater management is a crucial issue worldwide. Pollutants stemming from pure elemental, organic or inorganic compounds, or microbial sources, are an increasing problem in domestic wastewater. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been used as an effective and low-cost method of treating different types of polluted water. This review paper focuses on the effectiveness of pollutant-removal from domestic wastewater using vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) and hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs). Meta-analysis and ANOVA tests were conducted to analyse the potentiality of VFCW and HCW as a remedy for domestic wastewater and the effect of using different substrates and plant species. Meta-analysis shows a high significance (p = 0.001) between the interactions (method, plant, and substrate) on the pollutant’s removal efficiency. In both analysis methods, there were no significant differences between VFCW and HCW for the same pollutant (p &gt; 0.05); the average removal percentages when using VFCW and HCW (according to ANOVA analysis) were 80% vs. 90% for BOD, 78% vs. 77% for COD, 75% vs. 83% for ammonium-N, 48% vs. 56% for TN, and 60% for TP, respectively. Moreover, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the removal mechanisms for organics, inorganics, and metals from domestic wastewater using VFCW, and the effects of environmental parameters including substrate type, plant species, and dissolved oxygen which have direct and indirect impacts on physical, chemical, and biological removal mechanisms. In conclusion, VFCWs and HCWs seem to be an excellent approach, offering economical and environmentally friendly techniques for domestic wastewater treatment, but VFCW is considered simpler and more applicable for setting up on-site near houses, as there is no significant difference (p &gt; 0.05) between applying VFCW or HCW on removal percentages for most pollutants, according to ANOVA testing. More work is needed to study the effect of non-planted VFCWs and HCWs on removal efficiency.

Diversity and functional annotation of microorganisms in anaerobic chamber treating nitrate-rich wastewater.

The vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) for the treatment of domestic wastewater has become a conventional and cost effective treatment system with one of the major disadvantage of elevated nitrate concentrations. The present study makes an effort in providing a new design of anaerobic denitrification unit termed as anaerobic chamber (AC) whichwas introduced after two-stage VFCW to remove nitrates from the treated wastewater (WW). The AC provided all the essential conditions of effective denitrification such as anaerobic environment with enough carbon and nitrogen source. To understand the pollutant removal mechanism in AC, microbial diversity and functional annotation was studied by metagenomic analysis of sequences obtained from biofilm formed in AC. The efficiency of AC was measured with respect to physicochemical wastewater quality parameters. The removal efficiencies were 88, 65, 43 and 27% for total nitrogen, nitrate (NO3), ammoniacal-nitrogen (NH4) andortho-phosphate respectively. The microbial flora was much more diverse and unique pertaining to anaerobic microbes in AC compared to WW with total of 954 and 1191 genuses respectively with minimum abundance of 10 hits. The metagenomes exhibited 188% more Archaea in the AC than WW where Crenarchaeota, Euryarchaeota, Korarchaeota, Nanoarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota were major phyla with 60 genuses. The nitrogen metabolism was reported in terms of assimilatory nitrate reductase. As the class, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria were prominent in WW, whereas Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi in AC were abundant. From functional annotation of sequences, the microbial flora in AC has the potential of removal of pollutants present in the form of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Polystyrene microplastics accumulation in lab-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands: impacts and fate

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous pollutants that significantly threaten organisms and ecosystems. Constructed wetlands (CWs), a nature-based treatment technology, can effectively remove MPs from wastewater. However, the responses of CWs when exposed to MPs remain unclear. In this study, lab-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) were installed for receiving polystyrene (PS) MPs at concentrations of 100 μg/L and 1000 μg/L. The results showed that exposure to PS-MPs has no effects on COD and TP removal in VFCWs, but TN removal decreased by 3.69–5.37 %. Further investigation revealed that PS-MPs significantly impacted microbial communities and metabolic functions. The abundances of predominant nitrifiers (Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas) and denitrifiers (Nakamurella, Bradyrhizobium, and Bacillus) in VFCWs were significantly reduced, aligning with the responses of key enzymes. The presence of PS-MPs also decreased nitrogen removal by plant uptake, leading to decreased plant biomass and chlorophyll by 39.32–48.75 % and 5.92–32.19 %, respectively. Notably, > 90 % removal rates were observed for PS-MPs within VFCWs. In addition to PS-MPs interception by VFCWs substrate, the increase of released benzenes indicated that the PS-MPs biodegradation occurred. Such insights are vital for developing sustainable solutions to mitigate MPs' adverse effects on ecosystems.

Unveiling the nitrogen removal performance from microbial network establishment in vertical flow constructed wetlands

The combined effects of substrate types (natural zeolite or shale ceramsite) and hydraulic retention time (HRT, 3-day or 6-day) on nutrient removal and microbial co-occurrence networks in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) remains to be elucidated. In this study, zeolite-packed VFCWs demonstrated superior removal rates, achieving 93.65% removal of NH4+-N and 83.84% removal of COD at 6-day HRT. The activity and establishment of microbial community were influenced by combined operating conditions. The abundances of Amx, amoA, nxrA, and nosZ genes increased with longer HRTs in zeolite-packed VFCWs. Additionally, a 6-day HRT significantly increased the relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Nitrospirae. At the species level, zeolite-packed VFCWs exhibited ecological niche sharing as a coping strategy in response to environment changes, while ceramsite-packed VFCWs displayed ecological niche differentiation. Both zeolite-packed and ceramsite-packed VFCWs established functional networks of nitrogen-transforming genera that utilized ecological niche differentiation strategies.
