Etiopathological study of Ardita w.s.r. to Facial Paralysis - An observational study

Ardita is one of the Vata Vyadhis which is caused by aggravation of Vata. Ardita has been enlisted amongst the eighty types of Nanatmaja Vata Vyadhis. The vitiation of Vata especially aggravation of Vata causes ‘Ardita’ as mentioned in almost all Ayurvedic classics. Acharya Charaka has included Sharirardha in Ardita while Sushruta has considered only face or upper part of the body is affected in Ardita. Ardita can be co-related with facial paralysis on the basis of its signs and symptoms mentioned in texts. Here, temporary suspension or permanent loss of function, especially loss of sensation or voluntary motion of unilateral side of face is considered. It occurs due to any injury or inflammation to facial-VIIth cranial nerve, which leads to partial or total loss of movement of unilateral face. Actually, facial paralysis leads to a disability of interaction by loss of facial expression, which is a major part of human communication. It may reoccur or leave synkinesis. Modern science found drugs like steroid and Antivirals etc. for it, also surgical and other treatments are available for facial paralysis. Yet, its recurrence and synkinesis also reported. Facial function plays an integral part in everyday lives disability of both verbal communication and facial expressions are hampered in Ardita. It is a condition that causes temporary weakness or paralysis of muscles in face.

Case Study on Avabahuka (Frozen Shoulder)

Avabahuka is one of the Dhatu Kshayajanya Vata Vyadhi. It is the Vyadhi which hampers the functions of the hand. In Ashtanga Hridaya, Acharya Vagbhatta mentioned that Amsamulasthita Vayu causes Sankochana of Sira which results in to the restrictions of movements of hands. Avabahuka is correlated with the Frozen Shoulder in contemporary science. It is a condition which is characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. Avabahuka includes Amsa Sandhi Shoola, Shotha, Stabdhata, Sakashta Hastakriya etc. This condition occurs more commonly in Diabetic patients. Therefore, now a day’s its management becomes more important. In Ashtanga Hridaya for Avabahuka Nasya treatment was mentioned as Sthanika Snehana, Swedana along with Shamana chikitsa.

Role of Panchakarma in the Management of GB Syndrome with special reference to Sarvangavata

Guillain-barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks nerves and causes damage to the peripheral nerves. The nerve injury often causes pain to precede muscle weakness that ascends rapidly from lower to upper limbs, loss of reflexes, Numbness, and Miller-Fisher syndrome presents with areflexia, and ophthalmoplegia, often with pupillary paralysis. The signs and symptoms of GBS can be correlated with Sarvangavata in our classics having symptoms like Chesta nivrutti, Ruja, Vaksthamba. In other systems of medicine, the line of treatment includes plasma exchange or intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, ventilatory support gives only symptomatic relief and the chance of re-occurrence will be higher, in such cases the Panchakarma chikitsa, plays an important role in correcting pathophysiology. Methodology: A single case study of male patient aged 16 years presents with bilateral upper limb weakness, Pain over forearm and legs, bilateral lower limb weakness, difficulty in closing the eyes, difficulty in swallowing, 10kg weight loss in a span of 3 months, the symptoms of GB syndrome was co-related with Sarvanga vata Vyadhi initially he was treated with Kosta Shodhana with Nimbamrutadi eranda taila and Agnilepa chikitsa for 7 days considering Kaphavruta vyana followed by the principles of Vatavyadhi chikitsa including Sarvanga abhyanga with Balashwagandha lakshadi taila followed by Shashtika shali pinda sweda, Yoga basti, Anuvasana with Ashwagandha ghrita, Niruha with Mustadi rajayapana with mamsa rasa (meat soup). Result: The patient was assessed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome Disability Scale (Hughes), the total score of the scale was 6. The score before treatment was 4 comes to 2 after treatment, thus we can conclude that Panchakarma treatment found a significant approach in managing GB syndrome.

AVABAHUKA (ADHESIVE CAPSULITIS) IS MANAGED WITH SIROVIRECHANA AND UTTARBHAKTIKA SNEHAPANA: A CASE STUDY

Avabahuka is a disease considered under Vata Vyadhi. It is caused by Vata Dosha with anubandha of Kapha Dosha. In modern, it is similar to Adhesive capsulitis of shoulder joint which is usually known as Frozen shoulder. It is a chronic condition characterized by pain and loss of range of motion. It has a negative impact on quality of life and work performance. In this study, a case of 49 years old female patient complained with pain and restricted movement of the shoulder joint for 2 years. Treatment was given along with Panchakarma procedure for 1 month. She was treated with Udhvartana for 6 days followed by Snehana – Swedana and Shirovirechana with Mahamasha taila along with Uttarbhaktika snehapana. The improvement was assessed on the basis of grading of sign and symptoms and Range of motion (ROM) before and after the treatment.

A Comparative Clinical Evaluation of Janu Basti with and Without Upnaha in Janu Sandhigata Vata (Osteoarthritis of Knee)

Sandhigata Vata is the commonest form of musculoarticular disorder. It comes under eighty Nanatmaja Vata Vyadhi which mainly occurs due to Dhatukshaya in Vriddhavasta. Janu Sandhi is the major bearing joint in the body it’s more subjected to wear and tear. Sandhi comes under Madhayam Roga Marga where Vata gets localized in Sandhi thereafter Shleshaka Kapha Kshaya and cause symptoms like Shoola, Shotha, Akunchana Prasarana Vedana, Vatapurna Driti Sparsha which limits everyday activities such as walking, sitting and standing etc thus making patient disable to do daily activities. In the Shastras, Acharya Sushruta has firstly given the method of treatment such as Snehana, Upnaha, Agnikarma, Bandhana, Mardana. Upnaha is a type of Sagni and Niragni Swedana, which relieves stiffness, heaviness, cold and induces sweat. Janu Basti is type of Bahya Snehana and Swedana. It provides strength to the knee muscle, joints, and improves function of knee joint. In this study 50 patients having the complaints of osteoarthritis were randomly divided into 2 groups in Group A patients were treated with Janu Basti with Upnaha and in Group B were treated with only Janu Basti. The data shows that Janu Basti along with Upnaha i.e., group A has provided better relief in the disease of Sandhigata Vata.

Ayurveda Management of Sarvangavata with special reference to Friedrich Ataxia

The collective meaning of Vatavyadhi indicates the specific disorder occurring due to Vata Dosha. Wherever, Vata Dosha get vitiated it first enters in all Srotas of the body and then creates different types of Vata Vyadhi describe in Classical Ayurvedic text. Sarvangavata is one of the most common disorders among Vata Nanatmaja Vikara. The global prevalence of Friedrich’s Ataxia incidence seen in 1 among 50,000. Objective: The aim of this study was to access the efficacy of Panchakarma modalities in Friedrich Ataxia condition. Material and Method: A 20 year old male patient who is K/C/O- Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1) since 1 year (insulin dependent) stopped since 2 months and N/K/C of Hypertension and IHD came to hospital with complain of reduced strength in bilateral upper and lower limb since 3years and associated with difficulty in walking and slurred speech since 2 years which was diagnosed with Sarvangavata and was treated with Sarvanga Abhyanga with Mahanarayana Taila followed by Dashamoola Qwatha Seka for 5 days, Virechanakarma for 13 days, Sarvanga Abhyanga with Mahanarayana Taila followed by Nadi Sweda for 7 days, Mustadhi Yapana Basti for 10 days, physiotherapy and Shamana Yoga’s. Result: After completion of one and half month of total treatment, the patient as found markly improvement gait, muscle tone and gain in strength in bilateral upper and lower limb. Conclusion: Sarvangavata can occur due to Beejopgataja, Dhatuksaya and Abhigataja where Vataja Lakshana were predominantly seen in this type of case and can be manage with different types of Sweda like Dashamoola Kayaseka, Virechana, Mustadi Yapana Basti, physiotherapy. Different Panchakarma modalities helped the patient markly improvement for doing his routine activities.

Role of Panchakarma in Gridhrasi with special reference to Peroneal Neuropathy

The collective meaning of Vatavyadhi indicates the specific disorder occurring due to Vata Dosha. Wherever, Vata Dosha get vitiated it first enters in all Srotas of the body and then creates different types of Vata Vyadhi describe in Classical Ayurvedic text. Objective: The aim of this study was to access the efficacy of Ayurvedic management including Shodhan and Shaman Chikitsa in Gridhrasi. Material and Method: A 45 year old male patient who is not a known case of diabetic mellitus and hypertension came to hospital with complain of pain low back radiating to bilateral lower limb (Rt.>Lt.) since 2 months associated with weakness, stiffness, heaviness of right lower limb and dragging type of gait due to right foot drop since 2 weeks which was diagnosed with Vata- Kahaja Gridhrasi and was treated with Dashamoola and Mahamanjistadi Qwatha Seka for 7 days, Churna Basti for 3 days, Patra Pinda Sweda for 7 days, Mustadhi Yapana Basti for 9 days, Shastika Shali Pinda Sweda for 15 days. Result: After completion of one month of total treatment, the patient as found significant relief in the back pain, numbness, heaviness, improvement in gait and gain in strength in bilateral lower limb Conclusion: Gridhrasi can occur due to Abhigataja and Dhatuksaya where Vatakaphaja Lakshana were predominantly seen in the case and treated with Seka, Basti, different types of Sweda. To combat the disease in minimum duration we have used multi treatment approach to get synergistic effect.

A conceptual analysis of Marma Chikitsa in Avabahuka

Acharya Sushruta has classified Avabahuka, a disease of the Amsa Sandhi (shoulder joint), under the eighty varieties of Vata Vyadhi. Amsa Shosha (wasting of the shoulder) can be considered as the preliminary stage of the disease, where loss or dryness of Sleshaka Kapha from Amsa Sandhi occurs. Its growing prevalence in today's world necessitates efficient management with quick and long-lasting effects. Therefore, in such cases, Marma Chikitsa, an alternate Ayurvedic therapy, can be recommended. Multiple sittings are required for better results. Avabahuka can be treated with improvements, regardless of its severity or duration. In this study, emphasis is laid upon eight specific Marma Sthana (or energy points) for the management of Avabahuka by considering the related literature. This conceptual study may prove beneficial from the clinical and surgical point of view.

Ayurvedic Interventions in Motor Neuron Disease

Motor neurons are the neurons through which the brain exerts control over skeletal muscles of the body. Motor neuron diseases are rare heterogeneous group of neurologic disorders characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neurons. A 55-year-old woman diagnosed as motor neuron disease was admitted to Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College Hospital, on 2/11/2023, for a 21 day duration, presenting with complaints of weakness of both upper limbs associated with muscle wasting predominantly on right shoulder and wrist since 1 year. The clinical and laboratory features suggested a diagnosis of brachial amyotophy diplegia, a regional variant of ALS. According to Ayurveda, Avarana vatavyadhis are found to have close resemblance to Motor Neuron Diseases and her symptomology can be correlated to Kaphavruta Vyanavata. The patient underwent Avaranagna and Vata vyadhi chikitsa. Assessment of the patient was done before and after treatment by physical examination, ALSFRS-R and Neuro QoL scale. A satisfactory improvement was observed with gradual gaining of upper limb strength and quality of life. This case study demonstrates that brachial amyotophy diplegia can be symptomatically managed with Ayurvedic therapy.

AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH OF VEERATARU (Dichrostachys cinerea Linn.) ON VATAVYADHI W.S.R TO SANDHIGATA VATA

Neurological disorders are of excellent incidence today and affect our day-to-day lives. More than 600 known neurological disorders and conditions affect the human nervous system and are hampering the working potential of humans. For many of them, treatment options are minimal. The increasing dissatisfaction with the side effects and long-term consequences of today’s potent and fast-acting medications has led people to seek alternatives. Hence, many are looking towards the safest alternative therapies, of which Ayurveda stands in the first line. This trend indicates the potential for Ayurveda to emerge as a significant medicinal science globally, not only just in India. Neurological disorders can be correlated in Ayurveda under Vatavyadhi. Vata vyadhi is not a single disease but a group of disorders affecting all body systems. Pakshaghata (hemiplegia), Ardita vata (facial paralysis), Sandhigata vata (osteoarthritis), Grdhrasi (sciatica), etc., come under vata vyadhis. Traditionally, a large number of herbs are used to manage Vata vyadhi. One among them is Veerataru (Dichrostachys cinerea Linn.), which is not highlighted in the practice of Ayurveda. Acharya Susruta quoted Veerataru in Veerataradi gana as having complex actions like HANTI VATAKRTAN GADAN (eradicates diseases of vata), RUJAPAHA (reduces pain), and Bhavamisra mentioned in Guduchyadi varga and it is attributed to have the property of action like ANILARTIJIT (overcomes the pain due to vata). Raja Nighantukara mentioned it as VATAMAYA VINASANA (destroys diseases of vata), VATA VIKARANUT (acts on vata disorders), etc., as described by various Acharyas which are essential in treating Vatavyadhi.

VISHWACHI -A CASE REPORT

Vata is the prime cause of all diseases. Vishwachi is one of the vataja nanatmaja vyadhi. Being shoola pradhana vyadhi, it affects the neck and upper extremities. The clinical presentation of vishwachi resembles cervical spondylosis, a degenerative condition of the cervical spine. Hence, the Vishwachi line of treatment can be adopted in the management of cervical spondylosis. Materials and methods: Swedana, Basti karma and nasya are the samanya chikitsa for vata vyadhi. In this present case, radiating pain starting from the nape region to the right upper limb was effectively managed through Jambeera pinda sweda for five days, Kukkutanda pinda sweda for seven days, and Karpasastyadi taila nasya and oral medications were administered. Results: The patient had a significant reduction in pain and improvement in range of motion. Conclusion: Vishwachi's treatment line for cervical spondylosis yields better results.

Efficacy of Marma Chikitsa in the management of Avabahuka (frozen shoulder) - A Single Case Study

Avabahuka (frozen shoulder) is a type of Vata Vyadhi caused by vitiated Vata Dosha with Anubhandha of Kapha Dosha. The symptoms of Avabahuka can be correlated with the symptoms of adhesive capsulitis, which is commonly known as frozen shoulder. Being a disease of shoulder joint, which has the greatest range of motion, it seriously affects routine day-to-day activities. A 56-year-old female came to the OPD of Pt. Khushilal Sharma Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Bhopal (MP) with pain and restricted movement in the right shoulder since 6 months, having undergone conventional treatment without any significant improvement. In this case study effect of Marma Chikitsa in the management of Avabahuka (frozen shoulder) is evaluated. The patient was treated with Marma Chikitsa for 10 days. The range of movements improved gradually from 45 to 123° for abduction, 102° to 165° for flexion, 53 to 65 for external rotation, and 30° to 45° for extension. VAS score for pain in the right shoulder was 7 before treatment, which came down to 4 after first course of the treatment regimen and gradually to 3 after completion of the treatment. The study suggested that Marma Chikitsa may be used for relieving symptoms of Avabahuka; however, study on large population was suggested.

Ayurvedic management in case of Vishwachi (Cervical Radiculopathy): A Case Report

Cervical problems are very similar to Vata Vyadhi disorders. Thus, in the current investigation, in Vata Dosha Janya Vyadhi management by Brimhana Chikitsa is very effective. A disease known as Vishwachi has been described in Ayurvedic Samhitas as one of these illnesses. The symptoms of Cervical Radiculopathy, such as pain in neck region which is radiating to the upper limbs and sometimes restricted neck movements, have been explained in Internal Medicine books (Davidsons, Harrison). Vishwachi is a Vataja Nanatmaja Vyadhi. According to several Acharyas Ruja, Stambhata, Todan, Karmakshaya, and Chestapaharana of Bahus are symptoms that affects the cervical region and upper extremities. According to Acharya Dalhana, the treatment of Vishwachi is similar to Gridhrasi, a disorder that affects the unilateral or bilateral lower extremities and divided into two types: Vataja and Vatakaphaja. Vishwachi has symptoms which are comparable to Cervical Radiculopathy, a degenerative disorder of the cervical spinal part. Nasya Karma has been described as the treatment of Shirogata Vyadhis. Dhatukshaya is a main contributor of disease to the development of Vishwachi. Present study is an effort made to better understanding of disease and its management.

A conceptual review on the efficacy of Agnitundi Vati in the management of Gridhrasi w.s.r. to Sciatica

Background: Gridhrasi is Shoolapradhan Nanatmaj Vata Vyadhi mainly caused due to vitiation of Vata Dosha. The cardinal signs and symptoms of Gridhrasi are Ruk, Toda, Muhuspandan, Stambha. Gridhrasi can be correlated with sciatica due to resemblance of symptoms. The prevalence of sciatica varies considerably ranging from 1.6% in the general population to 43% in selected working population. Sciatica is characterised by constant aching pain in the lumbar region radiating to the buttock, calf and foot caused by irritation to the sciatic nerve. Being a nervine disorder, it can be treated by a drug having Vatashamak & Shoolaghna properties. Agnitundi Vati is a unique formulation having Shoolaghna & Vatahara properties. Kuchala is the major content of Agnitundi Vati which is more effective in nervine disorder. Kuchala being a potent spinal poison contains two major alkaloids named strychnine and brucine and it is subjected to be used after proper Shodhan process of Kuchala. Present study aimed to compile all the available literature regarding the pharmacological action of Agnitundi Vati. Aim & Objectives: To study the literary review of Agnitundi Vati & it’s mode of action in Gridhrasi. Materials & Methods: Various Samhita Granthas, textbooks and articles related to Agnitundi Vati & sciatica were studied. Result & Discussion: Agnitundi Vati is the formulation having Vatashamak & Shoolahar properties due to its Ushna Virya. Hence it proved to be a potent formulation for management of pain in Gridhrasi.

Clinical evaluation of Erand Tail Nabhi Puran in the management of Dysmenorrhea : Pilot Study

Dysmenorrhea is defined as painful menstrual cramps of uterine origin which can be correlated with Udavartini Yonivyapad. It is very common gynecological disorder in females specially in reproductive age. Sometimes it also hampers women’s daily routine. Udavarta Yonivyapad is explained in Ayurveda as a Nanatmaja Vata Vyadhi by Charaka where there is abnormal movement of Vayu in Pakwashay with painful menses. There are different types of NSAIDS, OC pills, painkillers, etc. to give temporary relief from pain but it also has side effects on body if taken in excess amount. In Ayurveda lot of formulations are used for treatment of same. An attempt has been made through Ayurveda classics in regards to dysmenorrhea with Nabhi Puran using Eranda Taila.

THE MULTIFUNCTIONAL ROLE OF HERBAL PRODUCTS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GOUT (VATARAKTA): A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Introduction: Vatarakta is a Vata Vyadhi that occurs due to exacerbated Vata and Rakta Dosha by their causa-tive factors. It can occur in the whole body but since joints of the hand and foot are more affected it resembles gouty arthritis as described in allopathic science. Gout is a disease described in conventional medicine that has similarities to the Vatarakta. It is a type of inflammatory arthritis that is triggered by the crystallization of uric acid within the joints and is often associated with hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia can be caused by overproduc-tion of uric acid, or, more commonly by inefficient excretion by the kidneys. The clinical presentation of gout ranges from the typical episodic acute inflammation of the joint to chronic tophaceous gout, chronic polyarticular arthritis, urate nephrolithiasis, and interstitial nephropathies. Several herbal drugs are well known for their thera-peutic effects and lower toxicity and are important substances for new drug development. Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to explore and validate the efficacy of herbal medicines in the management of gout. This review aims to update some research findings regarding the biological activities of the herbal ingredients of Ayurvedic medicines used in gout and also to collect an adequate basis for the opti-mal integration of Ayurvedic medicines into the conventional health system (Allopath). Materials & Methods: Systematic literature searches were carried out and the available information on Vatarak-ta and gout was collected via electronic search and a library search for articles published in peer-reviewed jour-nals and locally available books. Literature searches were also carried out to find the biochemical effects of vari-ous herbs mentioned in the management of hyperuricemia and gout. Conclusion: It has been demonstrated that plant-derived biochemicals have a potential effect on gout. These ef-fects comprise XOD inhibitory action, uricosuric, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant effects, etc. During the analy-sis of the literature available in Ayurveda, Allopathy, and related other branches of health science it was found that integrative medicine would be the optimal strategy to develop more effective agents in the treatment of gout (Vatarakta) and a combination of therapies may be very effective in reducing both the effect and frequency of disease.

A COMPARATIVE CLINICAL STUDY ON AGNIKARMA, NIRGUNDYADI UPANAHA, AND SHEPHALIKA KWATHA IN MANAGING GREEVA SANDHI-GATA VATA WITH RESPECT TO CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS.

Greevasandhigata Vata is a form of Vata Vyadhi caused by the interference or entrance of vitiated Vata in Greeva Sandhi, leading to symptoms like Sandhishoola (pain in joint), Sandhishopa (sweeling in joint), Prasaran Aakunchnayo Pravariticha Savedana (restricted movement of joint) etc. Cervical Spondylosis is one of the leading disorders in older adults caused by degenerative changes in cervical spine vertebrae and causing symptoms like pain & restricted joint movement, etc., in the neck, which further leads to the struggle of the patients to fulfil their daily routine work. Patients of Cervical spondylosis, are bound to choose analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections and physiotherapy as conservative treatments to improve their quality of life. In the advanced stage, surgical treatments like spinal fusion, spinal decompression, etc., are the only options. However, these procedures do not fulfil the goal of patients because of the very high cost and therapeutic limitations. Even after surgery, patients have to take analgesics for longer duration. These drugs are also not free from adverse effects like gastritis, hyperacidity, nephrotoxicity, etc. Treatment modalities like Agnikarma, Nirgundyadi Upanaha and Shephalika Kwatha are the non-pharmacological and result oriented therapies, recommended in Ayurveda for such type of disease condition. These are proven to be Vatashamaka & Vedanashamaka in various contexts.

A case study on Gridhasi w.s.r. to Sciatica

Gridhasi is one of the most common disease of Vata Vyadhi, which closely related with sciatica. This is characterised by low back pain and radiates towards posterior part of leg or discomfort associated with sciatic nerve. It has painful (Shoola Pradhan) condition which hampers the routine of life. In Gridhasi pain starts form Kati-Prushta (Pelvic & Lumbo-Sacral resion) radiating towards Jangha (Thigh), Pada (Legs) with impairment of lifting leg (Stiffness). The prevalence of sciatica varies considerably ranging from 3.8% in the working population to 7.9% in nonworking population. Contemporary medicine has limitations giving short term relief in pain or surgical intervention with side effect. The aim of this study was to access the effect of Ayurvedic management through Shodhan and Shaman Chikitsa. Here in this case study a 60 year female patient was suffering from sciatic pain (Low back Pain) radiating towards posterior part of leg due to herniation of L4-L5 and L5-S1 that is correlated with Gridhasi since 6 months approached to Ayurvedic Hospital and She was treated with Panchakarma treatment including Dashmooladi Niruha Basti, Merudand Basti, Patra Pinda Sweda and Raktmokshan along with Shaman Chikitsa. The treatment was continued for consecutive two months.

An open label single arm clinical study of Dashamooladi Yamaka Pratimarsha Nasya and Prasaranyadi Kashaya in Apabahuka (Frozen Shoulder)

Background: Apabahuka is a Vata Vyadhi which affects Amsa Sandhi and causes Amsa Bandha Shoshana. Prakupita Vata causes Kshaya of Shleshaka Kapha and Sira Sankochana leading to Bahupraspanditahara. Nasya and Uttarbhaktika Snehapana are the indicated Chikitsakrama for Apabahuka. Dashamooladi Yamaka Pratimarsha Nasya and Prasaranyadi Kashaya are the indicated Chikitsa Yoga for Apabahuka in Vatavyadhichikitsa. Hence this study is intended to evaluate the same. Objective: To clinically evaluate the combined effectiveness of Dashamooladi Yamaka Pratimarsha Nasya and Prasaranyadi Kashaya in Apabahuka (Frozen Shoulder). Methodology: 36 subjects were administered with Dashamooladi Yamaka Pratimarsha Nasya 2 Bindu in each nostril after food morning and night and Prasaranyadi Kashaya 16ml 3 times a day on before food for a period of 14 days. Subjective and objective parameters were assessed by Constant Murley score. Results: Statistically significant (P < 0.05) improvement was observed in subjective parameters such as Amsasandhi Shoola, Bahupraspanditahara. With objective parameters like range of movement of shoulder significant change was observed. Conclusion: Dashamooladi Yamaka in the form of Pratimarsha Nasya and Prasaranyadi Kashaya orally together were found effective in the management of Apabahuka.

Literature Review on Sandigata Vata w.s.r to Osteoarthritis in Ayurveda

In the present era, sandhivata is one of the most common diseases affecting a large population. The word Sandhivata is derived from “Sandhi” and “Vata”. When the vitiated vata localizes in sandhi i.e. joint, it is termed classically as sandhigata vata. It is one, among the eighty nanatmaja vata vyadhis. It has been studied in close proximity to Osteoarthritis. Sandhivata most commonly occurs in vridhaavastha due to dhatukshaya. mostly affecting the weight bearing ones. Here, vata afflicted due to nidan sewana, localizes in kha baigunya; sandhi, manifesting pain, swelling and restriction of movement locally. Material and Methods: Review of literature using ayurvedic textbooks, especially bṛihat trai and laghu trai, scientific articles from Pubmed, Google Scholar, databases searched with key words Sandhivaata, Osteoarthritis, Vatavyadhi etc. Articles were selected based on their title and relevance. The reported informations were screened and analyzed for the study. Conclusion: Sadhivata has been addressed as vatavyadhi commonly occurring in old age due to vata vitiation and depletion of body tissues. Various classical textbooks have mentioned sodhana and shamana therapy as well as multiple pathya and apathya which are helpful for preventive and curative aspect of sandigata vata.,The findings showed that with the collective approach of different shodhana procedures, including snehana (internal oleation), svedana (sudation) basti (medicated enema) and mrudu virechana (soft purgation), upanaha, jalauka, agnikarma, avagahana and shamana treatment (pacification) with vatahara, vedanahara dravya , sandhigata vata can be efficiently cured.
