ESTIMATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH - EVIDENCE FROM SIERRA LEONE EXPERIENCE

<p>The study analyzes the relationship between technology and economic growth in Sierra Leone from 2011 to 2022 and the data are treated via the E-Views program. ARDL methodology was used. The results showed a co-integration relationship between the study variables (computer use in general; computer use at work; and computer use in education, training, and economic growth) and the results presented that the deviation from long-term equilibrium is corrected using an error correction model which long term corrected as a percentage correction (−0.06) each year from the short term to the long term and showed the results of the structural stability test of the (ARDL) model. It is a structural stability test for long and short-term coefficients, which showed that the data used in this study are free from any structural changes but has stable parameters over time. The study also used CUSUM's Squares test, where the test results showed that the study model used is economically good and can be relied upon to anticipate economic solutions in Sierra Leone according to the situation in the coming years, and among the most important recommendations of the study are the following: the need to encourage the use of technology in work, education, and training, and the need for expansion in using these technological means as a gateway to the digital economy and the digital state.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>JEL</strong>: O33, O47, C51, C22, O14, O55</p><p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/soc/0708/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

The Investigation of the Relationship Between Classroom Teachers Views on Distance Education and Beliefs about Computer Use in Mathematics Education

In this study, we sought to investigate the opinions of classroom teachers about distance education and their beliefs about the use of computers in mathematics education. We used a relational survey model, one of the quantitative research designs, to collect data from 163 classroom teachers. The Opinion Scale on Distance Education developed by Kurnaz, Kaynar, Şentürk Barışık, and Doğrukök (2020) and the Belief Scale on Computer Use in Mathematics Education developed by Çakıroğlu, Güven, and Akkan (2008) were used as data collection tools. We analysed the data using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. A significant positive relationship was found between classroom teachers' views on distance education and their mean scores on computer use in mathematics education. The results of the study showed that the mean scores of classroom teachers' opinions about distance education and beliefs about the use of computers in mathematics education were both close to the middle level. Additionally, the mean scores of classroom teachers' opinions about distance education did not differ significantly by gender or education level, but they did differ significantly by professional seniority. Similarly, the mean scores of classroom teachers' beliefs about the use of computers in mathematics education did not differ significantly by gender or professional seniority, but they did differ significantly by education level.

Impact of Scaffolding Learning Strategy on Pre-Service Teachers’ Attitude to Cybercrime Prevention

The study investigated the impact of scaffolding learning strategy on pre-service teachers’ attitude to cybercrime prevention. The study adopted the quasi-experimental research design of the survey type. The following instrument was developed by the researcher and used for the study, namely: Scaffolding Learning Strategy Guide and Lecture Note (SLSG), Conventional Method Guide and Lecture Note (CMG), Attitude to Cybercrime Prevention Scale (ACPS) and Computer Literacy Test (CLT). The participants for this study were selected using multistage sampling procedure. The first stage involved the use of simple random sampling technique to select three universities (one university for each learning strategy) in the region i.e. Southwest, Nigeria. This was followed by the use of purposive sampling technique to select the department of Social Studies education in each of the universities was selected. Consequently, intact class in each of the selected universities was used alongside three research assistants and three lecturers of the department. The data obtained through the administration of the instruments was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. All the hypotheses were tested and decisions were taken at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that Scaffolding Learning Strategy (SLS) has no effect on the attitude of Social Studies Pre-service Teachers’ attitude to cybercrime prevention, teachers’ gender does not affect their attitude towards cybercrime prevention and computer literacy does not influence the attitude of social studies pre-service teachers to cybercrime prevention. Therefore, it was recommended that the use of instructional strategies should be well articulated so as to bring about change in the attitude of the learners, gender of the learners should not be seen as factor affecting the attitude of learners towards learning. Hence, during teaching, teachers should give room for gender disparity among the learners and emphasis should be place on the computer literacy of learners. That is, learners should be encouraged to have knowledge of the use of computers in teaching and learning process.

Digital approach in pedagogy and psychology of the future: trends, globalization challenges

People have been interested in the phenomenon of learning for a very long time. An impressive number of hypotheses and theories of learning have emerged along with the development of human thought and the scientific method of cognition of nature. The use of computers in education has been the subject of much research and debate. Technology has often been seen as a tool to help both teachers and students. Research in related literature has shown that we learn differently and engage in different types of knowledge creation when we use technology. The use of technology in teaching and learning has fueled the development of digital pedagogy. The SCOPUS and Web of Science databases were used to assess the problematic nature of the topic. 144 articles were analyzed, of which 20 articles related to the topic were taken for analysis. This paper analyzes trends in the digital approach to pedagogy and psychology of the future in the context of globalization. During the 2022-2023 academic year, a survey was conducted in three stages. The empirical study involved 216 teachers of pedagogical faculties from different higher education institutions of Ukraine who filled out a questionnaire through Google forms. The results of the survey have identified the main ideas of the digital approach to education, made it possible to identify the most popular digital learning tools, outline key areas in the education of the future, and determine the main trend in pedagogy in the face of globalization challenges, namely, a change in the educational paradigm that would allow digital technologies to coexist with traditional educational norms.

Teaching Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Zimbabwean Polytechnical Colleges: Success and Challenges

The aim was to investigate the success and challenges of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Zimbabwean Polytechnics. The study was guided by the objectives that included assessing the success in common computing skills levels among the staff and students, investigating levels of usage of ICT skills adoption and integration between students and staff, and to investigate the challenges in ICT skills adoption and integration between staff and students. Relevant literature was covered in chapter two. The literature was presented by referring to different researchers that wrote on challenges of ICT adoption and integration in the form of constructive argument by the aid of authors in support and those against. The research adopted interprevist research philosophy he target population of the study constituted 220 employees of the polytechnics and was reduced to 140 making use of sample size determination model by Krejice and Morgan. Operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and use of the internet were the common computing skills level among the staff and students. Frequency use of ICT tools in teaching and learning, frequency use of computers and the Internet for teaching and learning purposes, mandatory use of computers for teaching and learning, students being conversant with the use of ICT tools, and having a college budget to support ICT skills development determined the levels of usage of ICT skills adoption and integration between students and staff. The challenges in ICT skills adoption and integration between staff and students were lack of funding from the government and stakeholders, improper ICT infrastructure, expensive hardware and software costs and lack of skills and expert knowledge. The recommendations of the study were that the institutions should upgrade their ICT infrastructure and resources in order to maintain the success in computing skills level of staff and students, come up with short computer courses with diverse computer packages to enhance the level of ICT skills usage of staff and students and identify critical needs in the community and come up with potential projects to sustain themselves and build a reliable ICT infrastructure.

THE ANALYSIS OF COMPUTER MEDIA USE IN ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION LEARNING

<p>The use of computers in education is a factor; specifically, the computerization of educational materials is essential for both administration and the learning process. This includes the Islamic Religious Education because so far, there are still many that use traditional learning methods or lectures which make learning monotonous and boring for students. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the use of computer-based learning media in Islamic Religious Education subjects, the benefits, and also its obstacles. The research approach used is library research and data collection techniques with documentation, such as collecting journals, books, documents, and others related to the computer media use in Islamic religious education learning. The results obtained that the use of computer media in learning is very important to do because every learning process must follow the era, so that it is not monotonous. It takes the teachers ability to master computer and present more interesting learning with computer-based media</p>

واقع استخدام الحاسوب في التدريس لدى تدريسي جامعة رابرين

The researcher has used a descriptive method . The community of the research is composed of the teaching staff at Raparin University for the academic year ( 2020 – 2021 ) , and the sample of the research takes ( 70 ) members of the teaching staff including ( 50 ) master degree and ( 20 ) PHD degree , The researcher prepared a measuring tool for the reality of the use of computer by using the criteria by ( Al-Rashidi et al . 2004 ) and ( Al – Dahmish , 2007 ) , and by depending on the literature review and previous researches about the reality of using computer . The criteria consists of ( 36 ) items . The researcher investigated the Face Validity of the measuring tool by displaying it to a group of experts and specialists in the field . After making sure of the accuracy of the criteria , the researcher extracted the stability of the criteria by using the ( Cronbach Alpha ) method which was ( 0.83 ) , After collecting data , analyzing and solving the problem statistically by means of ( SPSS ) , the study has reached the following conclusions : According to the teaching staff’s the use of computer in teaching is at an intermediate level . They also believe that using and utilizing computer in teaching is at the same level among instructors having Master or PHD degree . Teachers seem to agree that providing course in computer training is sufficient . Teachers thinks that the obstacles to the use of computer are minor factors ; the factors and obstacles do not prevent the use of computer in teaching .

Disseminating medical literature and knowledge in India in the 1980s: the SMLRT story.

The informed netizen of today is in a state of information overload. With 785 million broadband subscribers and an urban and rural teledensity of 138% and 60%, respectively [1], India is already the second-largest online digital market. Today, in theory, medical journals and textbooks can be accessed by anyone, anytime, anywhere, and at affordable rates. Fifty odd years ago, when the authors entered medical school, the use of computers in medical education was unknown in India, as in other parts of the world. It was in this milieu, thirty-seven years ago, that eleven young Madras (Chennai)-based doctors decided to make medical literature easily accessible, particularly to clinicians in suburban and rural India. The aim was to make relevant, affordable reprints easily available to the practitioner at their place of work or study. Photocopying and using the postal service was the chosen, and indeed the only available, mode of operation. This article will outline the methodology used, trials and tribulations faced, and persistence displayed. At that time, the processes deployed appeared relevant and truly innovative. Over the ensuing years, developments in information technology made the services redundant. Extensive, even revolutionary, changes such as universal digitization and availability of a cost-effective Internet radically changed how medical literature could be accessed in India.

Teachers’ Use of Computers in Teaching and Learning in Public Secondary Schools in Arusha City Council, Tanzania

This study investigated the extent to which teachers use computers in teaching and learning in public secondary schools in Arusha city council, Tanzania. Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory guided the study. Convergent parallel design under mixed research approach was adopted. Purposive and stratified simple random technique were used to obtain 110 respondents where by 100 were teachers and 10 were heads of schools. Instruments of data collection were questionnaires, structured Interview guide and observation guide. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively usingmean, standard deviation, frequency tables and percentages, while qualitative data were thematically analyzed. Research ethics were observed whereby sources of information and anonymity of respondents were strictly adhered. The study found that, computers, electrical power and related programs were available in public secondary schools, but technical support as well as supportive and auxiliary infrastructures were found to be averagely available or not available in other schools. Findings gathered that, teachers to a small extent use computers in planning for teaching, lesson preparation, lesson presentation, assessment and evaluation as well as in communication and information sharing. Nevertheless, to a moderate extent teachers use computers for record keeping. Findings exposed that, teachers less often use computers in assessment and evaluation and in record keeping but rarely in planning for teaching, lesson preparation, lesson presentation as well as in communication and information sharing. The study recommended the government to ensure trainings of teachers to enhance their skills in using computer in teaching and learning.

O USO DAS TECNOLOGIAS DA INFORMAÇÃO E COMUNICAÇÃO NO ENSINO DE QUÍMICA

The application of some technologies in the educational field, especially the computer, has been causing this process to undergo considerable changes. The new information and communication technologies (TICs) are beginning to be used in the construction of knowledge. Looking to discuss this issue, this paper proposes to establish a discussion about the use of computers in education; the positive and negative aspects of TICs; and on some technologies for teaching chemistry, pointed out as tools that favor learning in a pleasant and pleasant way. Through the knowledge resulting from this study, it is verified that improving the teaching-learning process, especially of chemical discipline, is not an inherent attribute of the various digital resources available for this, but a consequence that is tied to the way in which they are used. It is the function of the teacher to conciliate all these resources at his disposal to better prepare and teach his classes, always establishing a dialogic and dynamic relationship with the student.

Book Review: ICT and Changing Education

ICT and Changing Education is edited by Chris Abbott. The book was published in 2001 and it has 142 pages. The ISBNs of the book for different versions are as follows; ISBN-10: 0750709502; ISBN-13: 978-0750709507. The book describes the evolution of computer use in education and addresses the notion of virtual learning communities through case studies involving learners, parents, and educators along with the different national policies.

Measuring the Attitude of Pre-Service Teachers towards the use of Computer in Mathematics at University Level

Integration of computers in teaching-learning has been a positive development in the field of education. However, there is a dire need of knowing the use of computers in teaching. Therefore, it is necessary to study the attitude of pre-service teachers related to the use of computers in instructional practices of Mathematics. The current study aims to explore the attitudes of pre-service teachers towards the use of computer in teaching Mathematics. A quantitative approach was used within it descriptive cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. The sample of present the study consists of (n=111) pre-service teachers of teacher training colleges. The reliability of the study was found as Cronbach α=.778. The results revealed that the pre-service teachers have an encouraging attitude towards the usage of computer in Mathematics. Overall, attitudes of pre-service teachers were supporting the idea of technological integration in Mathematic.

INFORMÁTICA BÁSICA APLICADA NA EDUCAÇÃO INFANTIL

Resumo: O presente artigo sustenta reflexões sobre Informática Básica Aplicada a Educação, fazendo uma análise do uso do computador, software educacional e o papel do professor/aluno no processo ensino aprendizagem. Trata do uso do computador como ferramenta de auxílio na aprendizagem infantil, ressaltando software educacional onde os alunos ampliem conhecimentos de forma prazerosas. Logo, podemos dizer que o uso de computador na educação infantil é tão importante quanto as demais fases, é um desafio para os professores/pesquisadores. Com os avanços tecnológicos, vários aplicativos e softwares educacionais vem sendo oferecidos para alunos/professores em geral. A maioria desses programas são de domínio público, visando oferecer ao aluno um ambiente interativo, adequado à transmissão da informação e desenvolvimento do conhecimento. Os softwares são adotados com a finalidade de facilitar o processo de ensino-aprendizagem, estimulando a interação entre alunos independentemente da sua escolaridade e faixa etária. O artigo, trata as vantagens e desvantagens do uso do computador como objeto de ensino, auxiliando no processo da construção do conhecimento. Portanto a pesquisa bibliográfica foi realizada com diversos autores, compreendendo como se dá o uso do computador, não para ensinar conteúdos de ciência da computação, mas sim ensinar computação do ponto de vista educacional desde a educação infantil, ajudam no processo ensino-aprendizagem do aluno.
 
 

The system of multimedia technologies implementation in high school

Recent research highlights the effective use of multimedia as an auxiliary strategy; it helps to easily deliver educational material to students and plays a positive role in strengthening the overall trend towards computer use in education. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of multimedia technologies in education. Multimedia technologies help simplify abstract content, allow you to differ from individual people, and allow you to coordinate diverse views from different points of view. Of course, multimedia technologies improve teaching and learning process, but this technology has a number of drawbacks that make it difficult to implement it into the higher school program. The authors of the study developed the system of MMT implementation is the educational process in high school. The system was developed according to the content of MM phenomenon based on advantages as well as eliminated disadvantages of new technologies in learning process. The definite level of financing and technical support, provided according to the State Program on Digital Economy of the Russian Federation, allows high school to organize the learning process via MMT providing a big volume of different opportunities for specific purposes. Follow the developed system allows educating digital personnel ready to work for digital economy of the region.

Perceived attributes of instructional computer use in early childhood education: A scale adaptation and validation study

Based on Rogers’ (2003) Diffusion of Innovations Theory, this study aims to describe the construction and validation of the “Perceived Attributes of Computer Use” (PACU) scale to measure pre-service early childhood teachers’ (N=581) tendency towards computer use for instructional purposes in early childhood settings. The development and validation process of PACU scale, reworking on the structure and item numbers of the original English scale ‘Perceived Characteristics of Innovating’ (Moore & Benbasat, 1991), was accomplished in four steps, namely (1) translation and adaptation procedure, (2) Q-Sort method, (3) exploratory factor analysis, and (4) confirmatory factor analysis. A five-factor scale with 23 items was revealed and a good fit between the data set and the proposed Turkish version scale was confirmed (NNFI=.92, CFI=.93, RMSEA=.97, χ2/df=2.58). Moreover, the reliability value of the scale was found .90. In the end, the overall measures and evidence validated a ready-to-use scale for prospective early childhood teachers.

ИЗ ИСТОРИИ РАЗВИТИЯ КОМПЬЮТЕРНЫХ ТЕСТОВ

The article deals with the formation and development of computer tests in the education system. Based on the analysis of the content of works by foreign authors, the primary experience of using teaching devices and machines in the educational process is traced. The contribution of the pioneers in this direction, S. Pressi and G. Paska, is noted. Particular attention is paid to the ideas of the 60s and 70s on the use of electronic computers for teaching and control, on the use of machines in pedagogical testing. The analysis of the form of computer testing is carried out. The work on determining the advantages and disadvantages of computer tests is generalized.

Challenges and opportunities regarding usage of computers in the teaching and learning of Mathematics

Many studies have identified the fact that most mathematics teachers experience challenges in using technology in their teaching, and learners also find it difficult to use it in their learning. Teachers often fail to address opportunities regarding this usage to address the situation. This paper explores factors contributing to teachers’ and learners’ challenges and opportunities for using Information and Communication Technology (ICT), such as computers, in the teaching and learning of mathematics in the OR Tambo Education District. A case-study design was used. The sample comprised 5 teachers and 5 learners selected from 5 performing schools in the District. Individual interviews and open-ended questionnaires were used for data collection. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. The study revealed that a lack of computer tuition opportunities, school managers’ attitudes and limited material resources contributed to challenges and opportunities regarding the use of computers in mathematics instruction in schools. The study concluded that a lack of teachers’ access to the use of computers in schools made it difficult for them to assist learners in the use of computers for teaching and for school tasks. Recommendations have been made to help enforce and monitor the use of available computers in schools.Keywords: challenges; computer use; poor implementation; teachers and learners

Awareness regarding risk factors of low back pain among medical students in Punjab

Background: Occupational health hazards are very common. With promotion of industrial life, the prevalence of low back pain has increased markedly during the past decades. Many factors at work could predispose people to develop musculoskeletal disorders. The goals of a medical school are to produce competent, professional doctors and promote health care of society. But during the period of medical training, students are exposed to stress, study problems, long training hours in hospital wards and clinics. In addition to the increasing use of computers in teaching and learning.Methods: This cross-sectional study will be carried out among medical students of new final year (n=145) in government medical college in Patiala Punjab during the period April 2018. Data collected from the students were analyzed and frequencies and percentage were presented for categorical variables.Results: Most of the students 68.27% had experienced back pain in 12 months period (excluding the premenstrual pain. Among 68.27% students 3.4% students suffered low back pain always, 10.34 % students suffered pain frequently and 58.62% students suffered pain seldom.Conclusions: There was high prevalence of LBP among medical students and many risk factors like lack of exercise, physical activities, carrying bag packs were present and it highlight a need for behavior change communication, education, counseling, and restructuring of the medical curriculum.

La construcción del uso educativo del computador en la escuela

A pesar del apoyo que diferentes organismos responsables de promover el desarrollo de la región latinoamericana y del Caribe han dado a programas de dotación y formación en el uso de tecnologías en la escuela, diversos estudios acerca de la efectividad de dicha integración en los procesos educativos han demostrado que tal inversión no mejora necesariamente la calidad de la educación. Por el contrario, en ciertos contextos se han probado perjudiciales para el ambiente escolar. Este artículo presenta el análisis del estudio de caso de procesos de introducción de computadores en diez escuelas públicas colombianas beneficiadas por el programa Computadores para Educar. Además, se hace una propuesta interpretativa sobre la construcción del uso educativo del computador. Se quiere dar respuesta a dos preguntas: sobre qué procesos de ensamblaje y de constitución de relaciones sociotécnicas tuvieron lugar en el proceso de introducción de computadores en las aulas por este programa. Y cómo interpretar las transformaciones de los usos de esos computadores en términos educativos, a través de estos ensambles y relaciones. Para tal fin, se hizo un análisis documental y trabajo de campo (entrevistas y observaciones) en sedes educativas beneficiadas por el programa durante el periodo 2004-2008. Los principales resultados son la descripción de los procesos y una propuesta interpretativa sobre la construcción del uso educativo del computador, a partir de una elaboración teórica desde la sociología de los usos, la teoría del Actor-Red, la sociología de la tecnología, y las propuestas del triángulo pedagógico y los esquemas de utilización.
