Honeybees age faster but bring back fattier pollen after consuming pesticide

Fat can be a blessing and a curse, sustaining creatures through times of scarcity but also causing disease when carried in excess. However, the loss of fat carried by honeybees in the fat body triggers the insects’ transition from life as hive-bound nurses to adventurous foragers around 21 days of age, ready to embark on a search for nectar and pollen to feed the hive. The premature loss of fat caused by stress can also accelerate this ageing process, leading nurse bees to initiate the transformation sooner. Megan Deeter from the University of Arizona, USA, wondered whether these precocious foragers may also shift their choice of diet to fattier pollen, in an attempt to compensate for their loss. Joining forces with Lucy Snyder, Charlotte Meador and Vanessa Corby Harris from the Carl Hayden Bee Research Center, USA, Deeter decided to find out.‘We were interested in a group of pesticides, insect growth regulators, and their potential to affect bee ageing and behaviour’, says Deeter, who selected two pesticides, pyriproxyfen and spirodiclofen, which target different aspects of the ageing process, to discover first how dining on the chemicals affected the bees’ survival. Collecting recently emerged young adults from a hive, the team gently fed the youngsters a single 2 μl sip of sugar water laced with either pyriproxyfen or spirodiclofen, ranging from 21 to 84 ng. The researchers then monitored the bees, keeping track of those that perished, and discovered that increasing the dose of pyriproxyfen had a dramatic effect: 50% of the insects survived the weakest dose for 25 days, falling to 17 days after the strongest dose. In contrast, the size of the spirodiclofen dose seemed to have little effect on the bees’ survival.Next, the team tagged 900 bees, administered a dose of pesticide to each and monitored when the insects departed on their maiden flights – noting the insects’ ages, when they left and returned, the duration of their flight and whether they were carrying nectar or pollen when they came back, which is indicative of foraging rather than simply getting their bearings – to find out whether the pesticides affected the bees’ ageing process and behaviour. Comparing the novices’ departure ages, it was clear that all of the young adults embarked on their orientation flights around similar ages, from 5 to 15 days, regardless of the pesticide they had consumed. However, the pyriproxyfen-fed bees began foraging sooner than the insects that had been fed spirodiclofen, although when the team checked whether the insects were returning with pollen or nectar, it seemed that the pesticides did not skew the bees’ choice of diet. But were the stressful pesticides affecting the quality of the pollen that the bees returned with and the amount of fat carried by the insects in their fat bodies?Collecting returning foragers with their corbiculae (pollen baskets) crammed with pollen, the team recorded the amount of pollen they were transporting and its fat content, in addition to the mass of the insects’ fat bodies, and found that the fat stores of the spirodiclofen-fed bees dwindled significantly, causing them to age faster and collect less pollen, but the pollen they collected was fattier.So, stressed forager bees lose their fat reserves faster than unstressed bees, especially when fed spirodiclofen, which prevents the insects from producing fat, but the insects compensate for their loss by bringing back fattier pollen, whereas bees that have consumed pyriproxyfen begin ageing faster and foraging sooner. Deeter suggests that beekeepers provide hives with high calorie supplements to maintain the bees’ fat stores once the flowering season has passed.

In Memoriam – Thomas S. Gladsky

Tom Gladsky was born August 26, 1939, in the coal-mining community of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. He passed away March 30, 2022, in Monroe Township, New Jersey, where he and his wife Rita had retired after long academic careers. A scholar in her own right, Rita passed away just five weeks before Tom, on February 21, 2022.Gladsky earned degrees in history and English education from Bloomsburg State Teachers College—now Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania—before going on to receive an MA in English from the University of Arizona and a PhD in American Literature from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.He joined the English Department at the University of Central Missouri, where he later served as Interim Dean of Graduate Studies, and continued his administrative career as Dean of the Graduate School and International Programs at Eastern Illinois University. While there he formed the Polish/Eastern European Cultural Interest Group for students. He later served as Academic Dean at St. Mary's College, Orchard Lake, Michigan, helping to develop the Polish and East Central European Studies Program before the college closed in 2003.Gladsky's interest in his Polish roots, combined with his literary studies, also led him to spend considerable time in Poland. He was a Fulbright Professor at Marie-Curie Sklodowska and Jagiellonian Universities, as well as a guest lecturer at the University of Rzeszow's Institute of English Studies.Princes, Peasants, & Other Polish Selves: Ethnicity in American Literature, Gladsky's 1992 study, helped ensure a place at the table for Polish American writing in the field of ethnic American literature and Polish American studies. His next book, Something of My Very Own to Say: American Women Writers of Polish Descent, which he edited with Rita Holmes Gladsky, helped open the door to what is now a well-established focus on Polish American women and on gender issues. Something of My Very Own to Say won PAHA's 1999 Halecki prize. Gladsky's stint as Project Director of PAHA's Polish American Memoirs Project underscores his interest in the making a space for the under-represented voices within Polonian history. In addition to his work on Polish American literature, Gladsky published on Polish literary figures like Jerzy Kosinski.Tom Gladsky served as PAHA president from 1998–2000, and in 2002 received the Haiman award for “sustained contribution to the study of Polish Americans.” He helped shape the universe of Polish American Studies as we now know it, and left a lasting legacy to this organization and to the scholars who took inspiration from his work.

Native knowledge of great lakes ecology: Climate changes to Odawa lands

Climate change has been observed for hundreds of years by the plant specialists of three Odawa Tribes in the Upper Great Lakes along Lake Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SLBE) is the focus of two National Park Service (NPS) studies of Odawa Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of plants, ecosystems, and climate change. Data collected during these studies contributed to developing Plant Gathering Agreements between tribes and parks. This analysis derived from 95 ethnographic interviews conducted by University of Arizona (UofA) anthropologists in partnership with expert elders appointed by tribes. Odawa elders recognized in the park 288 plants and five habitats of traditional and contemporary concern. Tribal elders explained that 115 of these traditional plants and all five habitats are known from multigenerational eyewitness accounts to have been impacted by climate change. The TEK study thus represents what Odawa people know about the traditional environment and thus provides a foundation for more complex government-to government relationships between Odawa tribes and the NPS. These research findings are neither intended to test Native TEK nor the climate findings of Western science. It should however be pointed out that both are in general agreement about what has happened due to climate change and thus there is now a TEK data base for co-stewardship.

Revolutions in science: The proposal of an approach for the identification of most important researchers, institutions and countries based on co-citation reference publication year spectroscopy exemplified at research on physical modelling of Earth’s climate

Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS) is a bibliometric method originally introduced to reveal the historical roots of research topics or fields. RPYS does not identify the most highly cited papers of the publication set being studied (as is usually done by bibliometric analyses in research evaluation), but instead it indicates most frequently referenced publications – each within a specific reference publication year. In this study, we propose to use the method to identify important researchers, institutions, and countries in the context of breakthrough research. To do so, we focus on research on physical modeling of Earth’s climate and the prediction of global warming as an example. Klaus Hasselmann (KH) and Syukuro Manabe (SM) were both honoured with the Nobel Prize in 2021 for their fundamental contributions to research on physical modeling of Earth’s climate and the prediction of global warming. Our results reveal that RPYS is able to identify most important researchers, institutions, and countries. In our example, all the relevant authors’ institutions are located in the United States. These institutions are either research centers of two US National Research Administrations (NASA and NOAA) or universities: the University of Arizona, Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Stony Brook. The limitations of our approach to identify important researchers, institutions, and countries in the context of breakthrough research are discussed.

Paris and its Revolutionary Ideas: A Guide to French Culture and the Capital by Suzanne Lalonde

Paris and its Revolutionary Ideas: A Guide to French Culture and the Capital. Cognella, 2021. ISBN 978-1-5165-3870-6. Pp. xxii + 213. "Can the past shed light on our future?" (xviii). That is the question that LaLonde asks as she searches for guidance––for herself and her students––in dealing with contemporary social, environmental, and medical crises. Turning to French revolutionary thinkers, she answers that through them "we may very well" find inspiration and guidance (xviii). LaLonde's original and ambitious work is designed as a textbook for students studying Parisian culture; it includes analyses of writers, artists, philosophers, scientists, and others who "confronted troubling times" in their own eras and "responded with revolutionary ideas" (xviii). She divides her study into ten chapters based on forms of revolution: educational, moral, ethical, political, emotional, artistic, psychological, metaphysical, psycho-philosophical, and global. Each chapter is clearly organized, beginning with a timeline of the key events, and including "Tool Boxes" with study tips, such as "History to Focus on While Reading" (3) or "Concepts from Literature to Focus On" (9), as well as questions to assist students, "Connect the Past with the Present" (9), and "Thinking Allowed: Topics to Ponder and Debate in Class" (xxii). Each chapter also has a "we may very well guide" (or guides), a key figure or writer in the revolutionary idea of that chapter. Throughout her study, LaLonde draws particular attention to paradigm shifts that "promoted a greater sense of dignity for humanity and the natural environment" (xviii), and she focuses primarily on literature and art because, she says, "Literature and art not only make us hear the voice of the voiceless, but they also prime our minds to feel empathy for others" (xx). LaLonde periodically relates a chapter's topic of study to contemporary issues to aid students in drawing connections between the past and present. For example, in her discussion of André Breton, LaLonde contrasts the revolutionary expansiveness of surrealism with the lack of innovation of realism, saying: "Images from realist literature mirror viral clichés on Facebook, kitschy objects for sale at a museum, or stock images on the Internet" (133). She incorporates a vast range of material, first providing necessary historical background for each chapter and then undertaking an analysis of some key works. For example, in chapter IX, "A Psycho-Philosophical Revolution: A Decolonization of the Mind," LaLonde begins with a summary of "colonial history in general" and then moves on to the history of the French colonial empire––together these comprise six pages (168-174); she then turns to Albert Camus and Frantz Fanon, providing a brief biography of each, followed by a short study of their key works. Finally, LaLonde discusses the Quai Branly Museum and its "contradictory goals" (182). Given the broad range of topics, LaLonde's treatment of each is necessarily introductory, however her original perspective and stimulating choice of topics create an [End Page 298] exciting and timely study. The textbook could be used in its entirety for a lower-division course of French culture focusing on Paris, or it could be supplemented for more advanced courses. Observed sidewalk autonomous delivery robot interactions with pedestrians and bicyclists

The recent deployment of sidewalk autonomous delivery robots (SADRs) across university campuses has offered students, staff, and faculty a convenient option for food delivery to their residences or workplaces. However, these low-speed automated food delivery services, which were first commercially deployed on American campuses in early 2019 and continued to offer an important contactless delivery service during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, traverse campuses on pathways originally designed for pedestrians and bicyclists, creating a potential for conflicts among the different pathway users and potentially unsafe transportation conditions. This study examines one week of field-recorded video from ten locations across the Northern Arizona University campus to help understand the prevalence and severity of SADR-involved interactions with pedestrians and bicyclists. The severity of SADR-involved interactions was quantified by using the surrogate safety measure of post-encroachment time, which was then modeled as a function of conflict- and site-level characteristics to identify predictors of moderate or dangerous conflicts between SADRs and human pathway users. Findings from this study, which provides initial real-world insights into the impacts of SADRs sharing pathways with pedestrians and bicyclists, are intended to help inform facility management strategies capable of supporting the safe introduction of this emerging autonomous freight technology on shared-use facilities in current and potential future settings.

Evaluation of E3SM land model snow simulations over the western United States

Abstract. Seasonal snow has crucial impacts on climate, ecosystems, and humans, but it is vulnerable to global warming. The land component (ELM) of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) mechanistically simulates snow processes from accumulation, canopy interception, compaction, and snow aging to melt. Although high-quality field measurements, remote sensing snow products, and data assimilation products with high spatio-temporal resolution are available, there has been no systematic evaluation of the snow properties and phenology in ELM. This study comprehensively evaluates ELM snow simulations over the western United States at 0.125∘ resolution during 2001–2019 using the Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) in situ networks, MODIS remote sensing products (i.e., MCD43 surface albedo product), the spatially and temporally complete (STC) snow-covered area and grain size (MODSCAG) and MODIS dust and radiative forcing in snow (MODDRFS) products (STC-MODSCAG/STC-MODDRFS), and the snow property inversion from remote sensing (SPIReS) product and two data assimilation products of snow water equivalent and snow depth – i.e., University of Arizona (UA) and SNOw Data Assimilation System (SNODAS). Overall the ELM simulations are consistent with the benchmarking datasets and reproduce the spatio-temporal patterns, interannual variability, and elevation gradients for different snow properties including snow cover fraction (fsno), surface albedo (αsur) over snow cover regions, snow water equivalent (SWE), and snow depth (Dsno). However, there are large biases of fsno with dense forest cover and αsur in the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada in winter, compared to the MODIS products. There are large discrepancies of snow albedo, snow grain size, and light-absorbing particle-induced snow albedo reduction between ELM and the MODIS products, attributed to uncertainties in the aerosol forcing data, snow aging processes in ELM, and remote sensing retrievals. Against UA and SNODAS, ELM has a mean bias of −20.7 mm (−35.9 %) and −20.4 mm (−35.5 %), respectively, for spring, and −13.8 mm (−27.8 %) and −10.2 mm (−22.2 %), respectively, for winter. ELM shows a relatively high correlation with SNOTEL SWE, with mean correlation coefficients of 0.69 but negative mean biases of −122.7 mm. Compared to the snow phenology of STC-MODSCAG and SPIReS, ELM shows delayed snow accumulation onset dates by 17.3 and 12.4 d, earlier snow end dates by 35.5 and 26.8 d, and shorter snow durations by 52.9 and 39.5 d, respectively. This study underscores the need for diagnosing model biases and improving ELM representations of snow properties and snow phenology in mountainous areas for more credible simulation and future projection of mountain snowpack.

Editorial. Special Issue in Honor of Dr. Alfred L. Gardner

It is a great pleasure to introduce this special feature honoring Dr. Alfred Lunt Gardner. Al’s many contributions to mammalogy span seven decades, two continents, and practically the entire tree of mammals. It is impossible to imagine what mammalogy in the Americas would look like without him. His academic contributions are as significant as his imposing stature. Al was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1937 and spent his early childhood there. His first interests in natural history were sparked by his 3rd-grade teacher, an amateur ornithologist who kept a cabinet of specimens in her classroom (Gardner 2005). In 1947, the Gardner family relocated to a farm in North Andover, Massachusetts, where, according to Al, he “practically lived in the woods fishing, hunting, and trapping” (pg. 277, Gardner 2005). In his adolescent years, Al would spend considerable time in the outdoors, honing his trapping and skinning skills. By his freshman year of high school, he was selling furs and evading game wardens (Gardner 2005). In 1953, his family moved to Tucson, Arizona, where Al found a trove of new habitats and wildlife to explore. By 1955, Al graduated high school, signed up for the Army Reserves, and enrolled at the University of Arizona, where his mammalogical interests would be further stimulated by E. Lendell Cockrum and his graduate students.

Constrained shuffled complex evolution algorithm and its application in the automatic calibration of Xinanjiang model

The Shuffled Complex Evolution—University of Arizona (SCE-UA) is a classical algorithm in the field of hydrology and water resources, but it cannot solve constrained optimization problems directly. Using penalty functions has been the preferred method to handle constraints, but the appropriate selection of penalty parameters and penalty functions can be challenging. To enhance the universality of the SCE-UA, we propose the Constrained Shuffled Complex Evolution Algorithm (CSCE) to conveniently and effectively solve inequality-constrained optimization problems. Its performance is compared with the SCE-UA using the adaptive penalty function (SCEA) on 14 test problems with inequality constraints. It is further compared with seven other algorithms on two test problems with low success rates. To demonstrate its effect in hydrologic model calibration, the CSCE is applied to the parameter optimization of the Xinanjiang (XAJ) model under synthetic data and observed data. The results indicate that the CSCE is more advantageous than the SCEA in terms of the success rate, stability, feasible rate, and convergence speed. It can guarantee the feasibility of the solution and avoid the problem of deep soil tension water capacity (WDM)<0 in the optimization process of the XAJ model. In the case of synthetic data, the CSCE can accurately find the theoretical optimal parameters of the XAJ model under the given constraints. In the case of observed data, the XAJ model optimized by the CSCE can effectively simulate the hourly rainfall-runoff events of the Hexi Basin and achieves mean Nash efficiency coefficients greater than 0.75 in the calibration period and the validation period.

Optimization of solids composition in ferrock mortar

Ferrock is the commercial name given by the Dr Stone working with university of Arizona which holds the patent on this novel material. This is an alternative material developed for structural applications in place of concrete. In this paper, ferrock mortar is prepared with various solids such as iron powder, iron dust, cement and fly ash to establish the optimum combinations of solids for preparing the high strength ferrock systems. Iron dust in the form of powder (size less than 90 microns) and fine aggregate (size between 150 microns to 2.36mm) is used in the study to develop the iron carbonate matrix which is major binding material in ferrock. For the process of iron carbonation, carbon dioxide is prepared from the chemical reaction of sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid. Iron dust cubes are carbonated to form iron carbonation matrix upon fusion. This material has very high strength than the references cement mortar samples.
