Efficacy of topical forms of sertaconazole in treatment of mycoses of skin

Published research results indicate the high effectiveness of sertaconazole in the treatment of mycoses of the skin. According to a number of studies, it is superior to other antifungal agents in terms of cure rate and speed of action, and also has anti-inflammatory and antipruritic activity.Material and methods. The aim of the observational study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Zalain cream (sertaconazole 2%) in patients with mycosis of the smooth skin of the groin area. We observed 21 patients (13 men and 8 women) aged from 37 to 72 years with a verified diagnosis of mycosis of smooth skin, confirmed by microscopic and cultural methods. In patients, during a cultural study, a mixed fungal-bacterial infection was isolated in various combinations: 14 (66.7%) – Trichophyton rubrum and Staphylococcus, 7 (33.3%) – Candida albicans and Staphylococcus. Of the concomitant pathologies, the following diseases were most often diagnosed: hypertension (52.4%), obesity (BMI > 30) (47.6%), type 2 diabetes mellitus (42.9%), gastrointestinal diseases (23.8%), diseases of the hepatobiliary system (19.1%). The effectiveness was assessed taking into account the VAS index (erythema, infiltration, desquamation, cracks, itching, burning) and special methods (microscopic and cultural) of the study at control points B1 (before therapy) and B2 (after 4 weeks of therapy). Long-term results of observations (disease relapse) were assessed after 6 months.Results. The total VAS at control point B 2 decreased by 94.9% (p < 0.01). After therapy (4 weeks), in 18 (85.7%) patients, pathogenic fungi (Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale) were not sown during cultural examination. Patients with no laboratory cure were recommended to continue therapy with sertaconazole for 2–4 weeks until complete eradication of pathogenic fungi. Long-term results of observations (6 months) showed relapse of the disease in 28.6% of patients with concomitant metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Also, among patients with relapses, males predominated – 66.7%.Conclusions. Sertaconazole has a wide spectrum of antimycotic activity, which makes it possible to quickly achieve clinical and mycological recovery in patients with mycosis of smooth skin in the groin area.

Estudio clínico-micológico de 136 tiñas en atención primaria

BackgroundDermatophyte infections are common skin diseases in Primary Care (PC) but vary over time and between geographycal areas. ObjetivesThe aim of this study clinical cases was determined the epidemiological profile and etiological agents of dermatophytoses in two PC areas. Also sensitivity and specificity of direct wet mount microscopy 20% KOH solution (40% for nails specimens) versus culture was calculated by 2 x 2 table. MethodsIn period from 2006 to 2020 a total 327 specimens of skin, nails or hair were collected from 325 clinically suspected cases of dermatophytoses and subjected to microscopy and culture. ResultsTinea corporis (59,55%) , tinea unguium pedum (20,58%) and tinea pedis (11,76%) were predominant clinical forms. The most frequent species was Microsporum canis (36,02%), followed by Trichophyton rubrum (27,94%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (22,05%), T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (7,35%) and Epidermophyton floccosum (6,61%). M. canis was the major pathogen causing t. capitis (66,6%) and t. corporis (58%) and predominant until 15 years, while T. rubrum was the common isolated dermatophye in t. unguium pedum (78,57%) and t. pedis (56,25%) and affected mostly up 15 years. Sensitivity was 93% and specificity 92%. ConclusionsThe results revealed a Southern European and mediterranean pattern: t. corporis and M. canis are the most frequent clinical form and etiology of dermatophyte infection.

Synthesis and molecular modeling of some novel hydroxypyrone derivatives as antidermatophytic agents

AbstractDermatophytes are pathogenic fungi, comprising the major cause of superficial fungal infections called dermatophytes. Although they infect keratinized tissues such as skin, nail, and hair, invasive serious infections may occur in immunocompromised patients. However, current antifungal drugs show considerable drawbacks, such as toxicity and multiple drug resistance, compelling and directing researches for new antidermatophyte agents. Herein, a series of hydroxypyrone bearing compounds inspired from the natural metabolite kojic acid was reported. Their antidermatophytic effects of the compounds against Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinaceid, and Epidermophyton floccosum were evaluated. The cytotoxicity of the compounds on healthy (MRC‐5) and carcinogenic (He‐La) cell lines was also investigated, and their cytopathogenic effects were expressed as maximum non‐toxic concentrations. According to the activity studies, compounds 10 and 22 were found as the most promising antidermatophytic agents (MIC: 2 μg/ml), exhibiting comparable effect with that of griseofulvin (MIC: 0.5–1 μg/ml) and terbinafine (MIC: 0.125–0.5 μg/ml) which are the most widely used agents for treating mycoses caused by dermatophytes. Molecular docking analysis of the most active compounds, compound 10 and compound 22, with homology model of β‐tubulin protein was carried out to investigate the possible binding conformation of the compounds in the targeted macromolecule.

Transungual Drug Delivery System for the Topical Treatment of Onychomycosis: A Review

Abstract: Onychomycosis is an infection caused by a fungus that causes discoloration and thicken-ing of the nail layer, and it is the most common nail infection in the world. Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigital is the most common anthropophilic dermato-phytes that trigger it. Onychomycosis is caused by yeasts such as Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis, as well as moulds such as Aspergillus spp. Treatment is determined by the type of nail invasion, the fungus genus, and the number of nails affected. Approaches towards conventional methods showed certain drawbacks, which emphasizes the need for alternate approaches to produce better therapeutic efficacy of a product. The present review focused on reporting an updated classi-fication of Onchyomycosis, causative organisms, factors influencing drug permeation, novel treat-ment strategies for Onychomycosis, and drug permeation enhancement methods.

BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF ANAMORPHE AND TELEOMORPHE OF THE CAUSING AGENT OF HUMAN INTERDIGITAL TRICHOPHYTHY

The article presents the results of isolation of anthropophilic strains of dermatomycetes and analysis of their biological properties. The biological properties of dermatomycetes were studied: cultural, morphological, biochemical, phenotypic and genetic identification of strains was carried out. It has been established that the T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale No. 5 isolated from the patient's skin and affected nail was distinguished by polymorphism of cultural characters and a variety of morphological microstructures. The fungus strain T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale No. 9 isolated from the skin of the lesion of the interdigital folds of the legs had more stable cultural and morphological characteristics. Analysis of biochemical properties revealed the presence of saccharolytic and urease activity. At the initial isolation of the culture, the anthropophilic strains were phenotypically reliably the strains of Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale. Long-term storage of cultures by subculturing has led to the appearance of morphologically heterogeneous colonies of strains which was expressed in the appearance of pronounced wrinkling, noticeable radial grooves and zonal rings, powerful branching into the substrate and its breaks, changes in the color of the colony, changes in the pigmentation of the reverzum. As a result of the molecular genetics identification of the strain strain by analysis of the ITS region in BLAST, it was revealed that the cultures are a teleomorph of the dermatomycete T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale known as Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii with 100% confidence.

Superficial Mycosis at the Avicenne Military Hospital in Marrakesh: 5-Years Review

Superficial mycosis were diagnosed in 1231 cases, a prevalence of 62.07%. The average age of the patients was 45 years, the sex ratio M/F was 1.19. The majority of the patients were followed as outpatients (96.99%). Of all superficial mycosis, onychomycosis was the most frequent with a rate of 52.32%, followed by epidermomycosis (37.44%), scalp mycosis (8.37%), oral mycosis (1.71%) and genital mycosis (0.16%). Dermatophytes were the most isolated (85.05%), followed by yeasts (13.65%), molds (1.30%). The main dermatophytic species were represented by Trichophyton rubrum (80.99%), followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (8.88%) and Microsporum canis (6.59%). The most common yeasts found were Candida albicans (67.86%), followed by Malassezia furfur (22.02%). Scopulariopsis brevicaulis was the most isolated mold (68.75%). At the end of this study we conclude that mycological examination is essential in the management of patients with superficial mycoses; which must also include the elimination of favourable factors in order to avoid recurrence.

Factors influencing epidemiology of dermatomycoses at Gdansk, Poland and Grodno, Belarus.

IntroductionAn increase in numbers of cutaneous fungal infections is being observed around the world. Dermatomycoses occur in every age group and can significantly decrease quality of life. Examining the prevalence and epidemiological trends of cutaneous fungal infections is necessary for developing new effective preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Many factors can influence the growth and patterns of global spread of the different species of fungi.AimTo investigate the differences between the prevalence of dermatophytes and cutaneous fungal infections observed at two mycological laboratories and their plausible causes.Material and methodsMycological examination was performed in 7324 patients in Gdansk, Poland and in 4729 patients in Grodno, Belarus who exhibited clinical signs and symptoms of cutaneous fungal infections. Direct preparations was made in 20% KOH with 40% DMSO. Additionally cultures were prepared on modified Sabouraud dextrose agar.ResultsDermatophytes were cultured in 642 (53.58%) cases in Gdansk. The most common species of dermatophytes were Trichophyton rubrum (306 cases), Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. granulosum (193 cases) and Microsporum canis (127 cases). Yeasts were isolated in 531 (44.40%) cases out of which Candida albicans was the most frequently identified in 323 cases. Similarly, dermatophytes were the most common in 1158 (68.72%) cases in Grodno. Candida were isolated in 527 (31.28%) cases. Analysing the localization of dermatomycoses onychomycosis was observed in majority of the infected patients in Gdansk. In Grodno the most common location of superficial cutaneous infection was tinea corporis In the Gdansk region dermatomycoses were observed in 688 female patients and in 508 male patients. In Grodno the prevalence is inverted with the majority of cases observed in 921 males and 764 females.ConclusionsThe prevalence of superficial fungal infections is higher in Grodno, Belarus when compared to Gdansk, Poland. Similarly, dermatophytes were most commonly observed in both Laboratories.

Les teignes du cuir chevelu: étude épidémiologique dans la région de Tunis de 2012 à 2020

Les teignes du cuir chevelu (TCC) constituent la principale mycose superficielle de l´enfant avant la puberté. La distribution des dermatophytes en cause change avec le temps et varie d´un pays à l´autre. Le but de ce travail était d´étudier les caractéristiques épidémiologiques et mycologiques des TCC dans la région de Tunis. Notre étude est rétrospective ayant porté sur 474 patients adressés pour prélèvement mycologique du cuir chevelu entre janvier 2012 et décembre 2020. Pour chaque patient, une fiche de renseignement clinique a été remplie et un prélèvement mycologique a été réalisé. L´identification des dermatophytes isolés a reposé sur des critères macroscopiques et microscopiques des colonies. L´identification moléculaire a été réalisée pour 4 isolats par Réaction en chaîne par polymérase (PCR) en temps réel en utilisant le kit DermaGenius®2.0. Nous avons colligé 210 prélèvements positifs soit une prévalence de 44,3% (n=210). Les patients de sexe masculin sont plus fréquemment atteints par les TCC (81%, n=170). L´âge moyen des patients est de 6,2±3,4 ans. Les teignes tondantes à grande plaque étaient prédominantes (88%, n=184). La sensibilité de l´examen direct était de 87% (n=182). Il s´agissait d´un parasitisme ectothrix microsporique dans (79%, n=166) des cas et endothrix trichophytique dans (7%, n=14) des cas. La culture était positive dans (98%, n=207) des cas et isolait cinq espèces de dermatophytes: Microsporum canis (87%, n=182), Trichophyton violaceum (9%, n=19). Trichophyton mentagrophytes var mentagrophytes (3%, n=6), Microsporum gypseum (0,5%, n=1) et Trichophyton verrucosum (0,5%, n=1). Notre étude montre l´émergence des dermatophytes zoophiles particulièrement M. canis. L´examen mycologique est essentiel pour la confirmation du diagnostic, la surveillance épidémiologique des dermatophytes selon les régions et la prise en charge thérapeutique.

Sterically Hindered Quaternary Phosphonium Salts (QPSs): Antimicrobial Activity and Hemolytic and Cytotoxic Properties.

Structure–activity relationships are important for the design of biocides and sanitizers. During the spread of resistant strains of pathogenic microbes, insights into the correlation between structure and activity become especially significant. The most commonly used biocides are nitrogen-containing compounds; the phosphorus-containing ones have been studied to a lesser extent. In the present study, a broad range of sterically hindered quaternary phosphonium salts (QPSs) based on tri-tert-butylphosphine was tested for their activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria and fungi (Candida albicans, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. gypseum). The cation structure was confirmed to determine their biological activity. A number of QPSs not only exhibit high activity against both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria but also possess antifungal properties. Additionally, the hemolytic and cytotoxic properties of QPSs were determined using blood and a normal liver cell line, respectively. The results show that tri-tert-butyl(n-dodecyl)phosphonium and tri-tert-butyl(n-tridecyl)phosphonium bromides exhibit both low cytotoxicity against normal human cells and high antimicrobial activity against bacteria, including methicillin-resistant strains S. aureus (MRSA). The mechanism of QPS action on microbes is discussed. Due to their high selectivity for pathogens, sterically hindered QPSs could serve as effective tunable biocides.

Antifungal Activity and the Chemical and Physical Stability of Microemulsions ContainingCitrus hystrixDC Leaf Oil

Citrus hystrix DC (kaffir lime) leaf oil exhibited antifungal activities against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of kaffir lime leaf oil and microemulsions containing kaffir lime oil against Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale. The chemical components of kaffir lime leaf oil were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Microemulsions containing kaffir lime oil were formulated using Tween 80, propylene glycol, and water using a phase titration method. The microemulsion of kaffir lime leaf oil was evaluated for droplet size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential using a dynamic light scattering technique. The antifungal activities of kaffir lime oil and its microemulsion were investigated through macrodilution and agar well diffusion methods, respectively. The degradation of citronellal in the microemulsion was analyzed by validated UV-Visible spectrophotometry. The minimum inhibitory concentration value of kaffir lime oil was 1.08 ± 0.00 mg/mL. The microemulsion of kaffir lime leaf oil exhibited potent antifungal activity against T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale. The size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential of freshly prepared microemulsion were 12.82 ± 0.40 nm, 0.183 ± 0.072, and −7.87 ± 0.06 mV, respectively. The microemulsion of kaffir lime leaf oil also demonstrated good physical and chemical stability at specific temperatures. The kaffir lime oil microemulsion was highly stable when stored at 4 °C and 30 °C for 1 month but was unstable at 45 °C. The microemulsion of kaffir lime leaf oil may be an alternative therapeutic against tinea pedis caused by T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale.

Antifungal activity of Ficus sycomorus L. extracts against dermatophytes and other associated fungi isolated from Camels ringworm lesions

Ficus sycomorus antifungal efficacy against some dermatophytes and other associated fungi isolated from Camels ringworm lesions was investigated in this study. Camel shows a high importance part of the national livestock population in Egypt including transportation in the desert and as a source of milk and meat. In this study, a total of 26 fungal species appertaining to 13 genera were recovered from camel hair and skin lesion samples. The most dominant fungal genera were Aspergillus followed by Trichophyton and Microsporum. The medicinal plant, Ficus sycomorus methanol fractions 20% and 40% of root, stem-bark and leaf showed a promised antifungal activity against isolated fungi. Whereas, all tested dermatophytic fungi (Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei, Microsporum audouinii and M. gypsum) and the cycloxamide-resistance fungi (Fennellia nivea, Choaenophora cucurbitarum , Aspergillus carneus and A. fumigatus) showed high sensitivity to 40% methanol fraction except Fennellia nivea which showed the highest sensitivity to the stem-bark (20% methanol fraction). In the HPLC analysis for flavonoids content of the methanolic fractions (20% and 40%) of the different plant part (stem-bark, leaf and fruit), twenty-one compounds were detected. F. sycomorus plant extracts possess a potent antifungal effect, especially with dermatophytes.

Fungal Leukonychia and Melanonychia: a Review

Fungal leukonychia is a common condition in immunosuppressed patients; the most common clinical forms are white superficial and proximal white superficial onychomycosis. It is frequently associated with Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and with Trichophyton rubrum. The diagnosis can be easily made by direct examination and culture. Fungal melanonychia is the nail plate pigmentation caused by fungal infections. The most frequently isolated fungi is T. rubrum and melanized molds like Neoscytalidium dimidiatum. The main differential diagnosis is malignant melanoma, although other causes include subungueal hematomas, exogenous pigmentation, and bacterial infection. If homogeneous pigmentation in lines or structureless discoloration, and the absence of melanin inclusions are seen by dermoscopy, diagnosis must be complemented with KOH preparations and cultures.

Os fungos mais frequentemente implicados no Hospital de Braga são o Microsporum canis e o Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. granulare. Trata-se de uma infecção frequente em crianças mas rara nos adultos. O Trichophyton violaceum é um dermatófito antropofílico raro nos países desenvolvidos. Descreve-se o caso clínico de uma mulher adulta, com história de lúpus discóide, com tinha do couro cabeludo por Trichophyton violaceum.

An outbreak of a mixed infection due to fungal (Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes) and parasitic (Geckobiella donnae) agents on green iguanas

Background: Green iguana (Iguana iguana) is one of the newly imported exotic pets which has been observed with increasing regularity in veterinary clinics in Iran. Despite their popularity, information about their diseases is scarce. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the pathogenic agents in green iguanas with skin disorders. METHODS: The animals were brought to Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Tehran, Iran, with chronic pruritic dermatitis, scabs, loss of spines and deep ulcerative dermatitis located over the body. During physical exam, deposits of dry seborrhea were taken and processed for diagnosis. The clinical specimens were cultured on sabouraud dextrose agar containing chloramphenicol and cycloheximide and mycosel agar. RESULTS: Microscopic examination revealed fungal elements as Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes and psoroptid mites as Geckobiella donnae. CONCLUSIONS: This was the first report of the presence of fungal and parasitic agents as the etiological agents of dermatological disorders in green iguanas.

Dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei in a dog: a case report

Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei is rarely isolated from dogs with dermatophytosis. It is a zoophilic dermatophyte transmitted by hedgehogs and, in contrast to other dermatophyte species, is characterised by a severe suppurative and inflammatory response known as kerion. A 5-year-old male mongrel dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a 2-week history of a localised pruritic and suppurative alopecic lesion on the scrotum. Routine blood tests, peripheral blood smears, multiple skin scrapings and bacteriological culture did not reveal any abnormalities. However, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei was isolated from a fungal culture. The presence of hedgehogs around the daily walking areas of the dog suggested the possibility of direct or indirect contact of the dog with hedgehogs. Fungicidal treatment was implemented with oral itraconazole (5 mg/kg once daily) and topical application of clotrimazole (twice daily) for a month. The scrotal lesion healed completely and hair grew back within a month. No recurrence occurred during a 4 month follow-up. T. mentagrophytes var. erinacei should be included in the differential diagnosis of suppurative scrotal skin lesions of dogs, which have come into possible contact with hedgehogs.

Comparative study chromatographic fractions activities from Terminalia ivorensis and Ketoconazole as standard antifungal on Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale in vitro growth.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate in-vitro antimicrobial activity of Ketoconazole and extracts from trunk’s barks of Terminalia ivorensis A. Chev (Combretaceae). In vitro antimicrobial activity of all the extracts was done by agar slant. Extracts were incorporated in Sabouraud medium culture and extract has been inserted to this medium according to the Agar slant method and Ketoconazole were used as standards for antifungal assay. Antimicrobial activity was determined by diminution of mushroom in the assay tubes. For each extract five tests were done. The antifungal activity was more pronounced against Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale. The fraction F8 showed best antifungal activity. T. ivorensis barks extracts showed better antifungal activity than commercially used antibiotics. Demonstration of antimicrobial activity of T. ivorensis provides the scientific basis for the use of this plant in the traditional treatment of diseases and may help to discover new chemical classes of antibiotic substances that could serve as selective agents for infectious and cutaneous diseases. This investigation has opened up the possibility of the use of this plant in drug development for human consumption possibly for the treatment of various infections caused by opportunists’ mushrooms.

DERMATOPHYTOSIS IN ZOO MACROPODS: A QUESTIONNAIRE STUDY

Limited published data are available on dermatophytosis in zoo macropods, despite anecdotal reports of disease occurrence and recurrent mob outbreaks. The aim of this questionnaire study was to analyze data from Australian and international zoos to evaluate estimated disease prevalence in zoos housing macropods, affected macropod species, causative organisms, predisposing factors, clinical presentations, diagnostics, treatments, and disease risk management. Two questionnaires (initial detailed and subsequent brief) were distributed via email to zoo veterinarians, with an estimated response rate of 23%. The overall estimated disease prevalence from responding zoos was 28%, with 73% of responding Australian zoos and 14% of responding non-Australian zoos reporting disease. The first cases of confirmed and suspected dermatophytosis in several macropod species and in association with Trichophyton verrucosum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. nodulare are reported, with young red kangaroos (Macropus rufus) appearing predisposed. Diagnosis was most commonly based on fungal culture or presumptively on typical clinical signs of minimally/nonpruritic alopecia, crusting, and scaling distributed most frequently on the tail, pinnae, and hind limbs. Both disease resolution without treatment and resolution after an average of 1 to 2 mo of treatment were reported.

Dermatophyties diagnostiquées au laboratoire de parasitologie et mycologie de l’hôpital Le Dantec de Dakar, entre 2007 et 2011

Dermatophytosis is a disease caused by dermatophytes, filamentous fungi adapted to human and animal keratin, colonizing and infecting human skin. The goal of this study was to identify dermatophytes responsible for dermatophytosis among patients, seeking for care in Dakar. Material and methods This study was carried out at the laboratory of parasitology and mycology at Le Dantec Hospital, in Senegal between June 2007 and December 2011, and included 2026 patients. Among these 2026 patients, 796 patients presented a dermatophytosis, confirmed after direct examination and/or culture in 1044 specimens. Patients' age varied between 3months to 89years with 25.5 years of age average; the infestation index was 39.3%. Patients between 20-29years were more infested with 15.3%, followed by 10-19years (9.1%), 0-9years (8.7%), 30-39years (2.7%), 40-49years (1.5%), 50-59years (1.3%), 60-69years (0.4%), 70-79years (0.2%), and 80-89years (0.1%). Women were more infected (77%) than men 23%. The main species isolated were Trichophyton soudanense (52.78%), Trichophyton rubrum (30.94%), Microsporum canis (4.89%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (4.50%), Microsporum langeronii (3.54%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (1.82%). This study shows that dermatophytes and dermatophytosis are endemic to Senegal.

When the infection is clinically mimicking another cutaneous disorder or when the clinical presentation is modified by the use of inappropriate treatment, it is referred to as tinea atypica or tinea incognito.We report a series of nine cases of patients with tinea atypica, imitating and diagnosed initially as different skin diseases. Two patients were defined as pyoderma in the facial and pubic regions (caused respectively by Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis) and one as herpes zoster ophthalmicus (caused by Trichophyton rubrum). Six additional patients were initially misdiagnosed: (1) Plaque-like formation of the skin misdiagnosed as an impetiginized eczema (with isolated agent Trichophyton verrucosum). (2) A rare form of skin infection of the hand caused by T. rubrum, imitating clinically cutaneous infection with tuberculum mulgentium. (3) Rosacea-like dermatitis with an isolated agent Fusarium. (4) A patient with the typical clinical symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis of the face (and with isolated T. rubrum as a causative agent). (5) Another patient presented with a widespread folliculitis by Trichophyton mentagrophytes. (6) In a patient with bullous pemphigoid and immunosuppression pemphigoid-like eruptions were caused by Malassezia pachydermatis and T. rubrum. The diagnosis in the presented cases was based on direct microscopic examination with KOH and a culture on Sabouraud agar.After the diagnosis of tinea, treatment with topical and systemic antifungal agents was administrated, followed by complete clinical remissions in all cases.The clinical manifestations of tinea atypica can mimic a large number of other dermatoses, which often leads to misdiagnosing, and as a consequence--to serious difficulties in the management of clinical symptoms and in offering appropriate therapy.
