TRANSLATION STRATEGIES OF THE JAMAICAN DIALECT IN HOUCK'S NOVEL 'TIGER'S VOYAGE'

Dialects in literary works give new challenges for translators. In the novel Tiger’s Voyage, one character with Jamaican English dialect is presented differently by the way of his speaking, so is in the Indonesian translation. This research aimed to analyze the translation strategies used for translating the dialects in Indonesian translation based on Berezowski’s dialectical translation strategies. This study applies qualitative method by utilizing data in the forms of dialogues spoken by the character. The result shows that six out of ten translation strategies were applied with artificial variety as the most dominant one. The application of the strategies was based on the phonological and syntactic deviation existing in the data, from which the Indonesian translator choses to keep the phonological deviation as the only modification remains. As an implication, the Indonesian translation of Tiger’s Voyage stays allegiant to the source text where Jamaican English dialect is presented through the character, even though it is made artificially. Through the modifications, however, the translation can still be comprehended by the target text readers. It is adjusted to the target language by adhering to domestication technique to anticipate the readers from confusion.

The shift in the translation of Japanese compound sentences into Indonesian in the novel Tokyo Tower by Lily Franky

Indonesian sentence structure with a subject-verb-object pattern differs from Japanese sentence structure with a subject-object-verb pattern. This significant difference in grammatical structure often creates difficulties in translating Japanese into Indonesian, especially in translating written texts with long or compound sentences. This article tries to analyze the translation of Japanese compound sentences into Indonesian from the aspect of translation shift. This study will explain the shift in translating Japanese compound sentences into Indonesian. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data sources of this research were taken from the Japanese novel Tokyo Tower by Lily Franky and the Indonesian translation of the novel with the same title. The result is 270 compound sentences as finding data. This study analyzes compound sentence data using translation shift theory according to Catford (1965), which is classified into six types: a level shift from lexical level to grammatical level, a level shift from grammatical level to lexical level, a structure shift, a class shift, a unit shift, and intrasystem shifts. The shift in structure is a definite thing because of the differences in the sentence structure between Japanese and Indonesian, especially in the translation of compound sentences.

Techniques and methods of translation in short story Is That So? I’m A Giraffe by Min-gyu Park

The same is true of the Indonesian translation of a Korean short story. Undoubtedly, the process is not simple. This study aims to find out the use of translation techniques, the use of translation methods, and the application of translation techniques and methods used in equivalents of the short story Is That So? I’m a Giraffe by Min-Gyu Park and using Molina and Albir's theory of translation techniques, Newmark's theory of translation method, and Nida and Taber's equivalence theory. This study used a descriptive qualitative method by analyzing the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences contained in the short story as the data source. The note-taking technique was also used. The results of the data analysis showed that there were ten translation techniques and eight translation methods used in translating the text. The modulation technique was the most frequently used technique with 172 occurrences, and the free translation method was the most common method with 176 occurrences. Based on these results, the translation of the short story is included in the dynamic equivalence which is more concerned with the meaning of the target language.

Translation of Adjectival Collocations in Sidney Sheldon’s “Tell Me Your Dreams” into Indonesian

Translating collocation is one of the most challenging tasks due to the linguistic and semantic features they have. This study analyzes the translation of the adjectival collocations of “Tell me your Dreams” into Indonesian. To be more specific, it aims at (1) discovering how English adjectival collocations are translated into Indonesian; (2) figuring out how many types of equivalence there are in the Indonesian translation from the English adjectival collocations; (3) discovering how many types of shift there are in the Indonesian translation from the English adjectival collocations; (4) figuring out whether shift happens more than equivalence or vice versa; and (5) figuring out whether the collocation translation makes the TL cohesive and coherent or not. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method because all of the data that are analyzed in this research are in form of words and sentences not numbers and it is directed to answer research questions concerning the status of the subject of the study. The result shows that equivalence dominates the translation of English collocations into Indonesian in the novel with 30 (58.8%) of the whole data, and the amount of shift is 21 (41.2%) of the whole data.

The Idioms and Culture-Specific Items Translation Strategy for a Classic Novel

A translator must have a thorough grasp of a language and its culture in order to determine the most appropriate interpretation while being true to the culture's intent. They must understand the translation technique and category to maintain consistency while translating cultural texts such as idioms and culture-specific items. This study explored translation procedures for idioms and culture-specific items, as well as their categories, in light of these considerations. The researcher did a descriptive qualitative study utilizing two instruments from Lucy M. Montgomery's original novel "Anne's House of Dreams," which was first published in 1917 and had 275 pages. Meanwhile, Maria M. Lubis released a 275-page Indonesian translation in 1998. According to the findings, there were 146 data points for idioms and 26 data points for culture-specific things. The most common translation approach utilized was Translation by Paraphrase, and the least common was Translation by Omission, according to the initial statistics on idioms. Meanwhile, the second set of data on Culture-specific Items revealed that Transfer was the most regularly utilized translation approach, while Deletion was the least. Finally, the most often used category for classification was Ecology. Overall, we believe that this study will aid readers in comprehending translation.

The Shift of Adjunct Structures of Indonesian Translation of English in a News Portal: A Linguistic Study

Abstract. The purpose of the present study was to explore the phrase that functions as an adjunct in the articles which are written in two version of the language: English and Bahasa Indonesia. Therefore, it can be seen in the deep structure of the article whether the translations are kept to use the same structure from the English or to use another one in the Indonesian translation. This will reveal the strategy that the translator uses in translating the articles. News Articles from www.bbc.com were taken as the data of the present study. In gaining the data, purposive sampling technique was used. This technique was to find out more comprehensive data. There are twenty-two data studied in this study which comprises eleven English and Indonesian text in equal. The data were the same articles that were written in English and their translations, in Bahasa Indonesia. Results of the present study show that, first, there were different variations of constituent constructing the phrase when written in both languages. Second, two different constituents can create a new phrase in which there is no such a head representing the phrase. Third, a preposition in Bahasa Indonesia can precedes the adjectives.Keywords: English, Indonesian, Adjunct, News Portal

The use of consultation on Incontinence Questioner – Nocturia (ICIQ-N) in Indonesian population: an affirmation study

Background: Nocturia is a urological condition in which individuals urinate more frequently than usual at night and it affects both genders. The clinician frequently uses questionnaires to diagnose nocturia however, some validated questions were in English. This study evaluated the validity of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire – Nocturia (ICIQ-N) in Indonesian patients. Methods: Two certified bilinguals (English-Indonesian) translated the ICIQ-N questionnaire from English to Indonesian. The reverse translation was done by two certified bilingual (Indonesian-English) translators, and the writers reviewed all of the translations leading to the final Indonesian translation. Instead of a linguistic translation, this technique ensured a thorough and unambiguous intellectual translation. The translated ICIQ-N was presented twice to the subjects, two weeks apart, to verify the questionnaire. The responses' validity and reliability were then investigated. Pearson and Cronbach’s alpha analysis were used to determine validity and reliability. Results: The r-Pearson correlation values ranged from 0.933 to 1 (p:0.001). The translated ICIQ-N questioner items were found to be reliable with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.994 (>0.6). Conclusions: The ICIQ-N Indonesian version generated for this study is valid and reliable. As a result, it may be utilized as a diagnostic tool in Indonesian population.

Expressions of Violence against Women in French Novel Syngué Sabour and the Indonesian Translation

Abstract Violence against women is a gender issue that often appears in literary works. In cases where those works become translated, this theme may experience shifts in context from the source text to the target text, which can cause a shift in meaning as well. This research aims to discern how expressions of violence against women as narrated in a source text become translated into the target text. In this qualitative descriptive study, data in the forms of words, phrases, or sentences denoting violence against women have been taken from the French novel Syngué Sabour and its Indonesian translation, Batu Kesabaran. The results show that the expressions related to verbal and sexual violence were translated by means of overlexicalization. The translator employed this strategy to place emphasis on the problems raised, although the results give the impression that the translator portrays women in an exceedingly inferior and negative manner. On the other hand, expressions related to physical violence, murder, and human trafficking tend to use a more neutral language. This is true since the issue of violence against women in literary works can be seen not only through the chosen diction but also through the characters’ actions and behaviors.

The Translation Procedures Found in English Novel Entitled Looking for Alaska into Indonesian

This study focuses on two aspects: (1) the translation procedures are found in English into Indonesian novel entitled Looking for Alaska; and (2) the most dominant translation procedure found in the novels entitled Looking for Alaska. The data were taken from a novel entitled Looking for Alaska and its Indonesian translation with the same title. The data collection was done by documentation method, reading and taking notes. The data were analysed by descriptive and qualitative methods. The data analysis was presented by using the informal method to describe and explain the types and translation procedures. The results suggested that (1) borrowing procedure found in the novel is 31 data, calque procedure with 10 data, literal translation procedure with 8 data, transposition procedure with 4 data, equivalence with 6 data, adaptation with 1 data; (2) the most dominant procedure used by the translator was borrowing procedure.

Grammatical equivalence in the Arabic poets of the Daulah Umawiyyah period

This study will examine the translation products of Arabic literary works that existed in the period of the Umawiyyah. This research generally uses two approaches, namely the literature approach and the translation science approach. Based on the translation approach, this study will measure the grammatical equivalence between Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia in the literary works of Arab poets during the Daulah Umawiyyah period. Then, this study will examine the application of translation techniques and methods in the literary works of the Arab poets of the Umawiyyah period. As for the approach to Literature, this research will investigate the product of the translation of literary works of Arab poets in the period of the Daulah Umawiyyah structurally. The diversity in Arabic Indonesian translation can be found in some aspects such as: (1) number, (2) gender, (3) person, (4) tense and aspect, and (5) voice. In addition, the application of translation techniques has a significant impact on the quality of Arabic poetry translation.

CATEGORY SHIFTS ANALYSIS IN THE TRANSLATION OF THE TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD

In the process of translation, numerous challenges oftentimes emerge due to the differences between the source language and the target language. For each difficulty, there are various translation theories and strategies that can be applied to address them. This research focuses on one of the strategies, namely category shifts as proposed by Catford (1965). The sources of the data used are J.K. Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard (2008) and its Indonesian translation, Kisah-Kisah Beedle Si Juru Cerita (2009). This research aims to find category shifts in the translation and how they are implemented. The method used in conducting the research is descriptive qualitative and the data are chosen randomly. The result of the research shows that the translation uses all kinds of category shifts with a total of 131 data, which include 33 structure-shifts, 32 class-shifts, 52 unit-shifts, and 14 intra-system-shifts. It is expected that this research can be used by translators as they encounter difficulties related to category shifts, or by future researchers who are willing to conduct similar research.

STRATEGIES USED IN TRANSLATING THE FANTASTIC EVENTS IN VENUS DARI KOTA ILLE

The fantastic (le fantastique) is a literary genre that originated from France, which has a specific characteristic of an ambiguous event that cannot be found in other literary works from other countries that introduce similar genres. This study discusses the translation strategies used to translate these fantastic events in Venus dari Kota Ille, the Indonesian translation version of the fantastic story of La Vénus d'Ille by Mérimée (1837). The objective of this research is to see what strategies the translator use in translating the fantastic events that are present in the French version that contained uncanny elements and whether these elements are preserved in the Indonesian translation. By implementing the theory of translation techniques by Molina & Albir (2002), six translation strategies are found in Venus dari Kota Ille, namely established equivalent, literal translation, modulation, calque, compensation, and amplification. These translation strategies are used to maintain the uncanny element of supernatural creatures in the characteristics of a French fantastic story. In addition, the translator also creates a more intensive sinister element in the target text (TT) by using compensation. These results show that although there are differences in the characteristics of French and Indonesian literary works, these characteristics can still be maintained within the translation. However, this does not guarantee that the translator will not give any additions to the translation to emphasize the message in the TT.KEYWORDS: translation strategies, French fantastic story, La Vénus d’Ille

Pengaruh Psychological Well-Being dan Kepuasan Kerja Terhadap Stres Kerja Anggota Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia

This research aims to determine the influence of psychological well-being and job satisfaction on job stress members of the association of Indonesian translators. This study used a quantitative method in which the sampling technique was through a simple random sampling technique where the subjects in this study amounted to 141 people. Data were collected using was a Likert scale consisting of three scales, namely the psychological well-being scale, job satisfaction scale, and work stress scale. The data analysis technique used multiple regression analysis. The results showed that there was be a significant effect between psychological well-being and job satisfaction on the work stress of HPI members. This is indicated by the coefficient F reg = 15.211 with p < 0.05, and the coefficient R = 0.425 with p < 0.05 and R2 = 0.181. The total contribution of these two variables was 18.1%, while the remaining was 81.9% is influenced by other factors on job stress. From the result of the study, it can be concluded that psychological well-being and job satisfaction jointly affect the work stress of the association of Indonesian translators

The Translation of Idiomatic Expressions in ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ Novel from English into Indonesian

This research examines idiomatic expressions found in the translation of Twain’s ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ from English into Indonesian; identifies the characteristics of idiomatic expressions; and investigates translator’s decision to apply the procedures of translating idiomatic expressions and equivalence. This research was data-driven study which focuses on idiomatic expressions found in an American novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain (1884/2018) as the Source Text (ST) and its Indonesian translation by Ambhita Dhyaningrum (2011) as the Target Text (TT). The data was analyzed by using descriptive (qualitative)-comparative methods focusing on Kvetko’s (2009) characteristics of idioms, Catford’s (1965) formal correspondence and textual equivalence, and Newmark’s (1981) semantic and communicative translation. The findings show that demotivated/opaque idioms, partially motivated idioms/semi opaque, and semi idioms are identified in the idioms. In addition, verba, verbless, and minimal pair idioms are found. Moreover, the translator tends to apply translation shifts which depart from formal correspondence to achieve the textual equivalence. Nevertheless, sometimes the translation shifts occur without resulting in the textual equivalence. The translator also applies communicative translation which is more natural in the target language.

Translation Quality of Arabic Directive Speech Acts in Pandemic’s Book: An Attempt to Delve into Covid-19

This study aimed to describe the types of directive speech acts, the use of translation techniques, and the quality of the Indonesian translation of the book Badzl al-Mâ'ûn fi Fadhl ath-Thâ'ûn. This research used descriptive analysis to describe the findings; the qualitative was chosen as the method of this study. Consequently, the data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's and Spradley's models. The results of this study stated that there were 60 data consisting of eight directive speech act types, where the frequency of using the technique was found 527 times for 15 techniques. Of the 60 data, 32 were translated accurately, acceptably, and with a high degree of readability and fell into the 'good' category. The average score for translation quality was 2.69. The study's contribution was to analyze Arabic texts translated into Indonesian using pragmatic models and measure their quality so that readers can quickly grasp the pandemic study from the perspective of the Arabic text.

Translation, validity and reliability of decision style scale in forensic psychiatric setting in Indonesia

ObjectiveClinical reasoning as an essential skill for psychiatrists, especially in forensic psychiatry, relies on their thinking and decision-making skills. However, not all psychiatrists are aware of their decision-making styles. This study examines the validity and reliability of the Indonesian translation of the Decision Style Scale (DSS) instrument among general psychiatrists in the Indonesian forensic psychiatry setting. MethodThis is a cross-sectional study involving 32 general psychiatrists from all nine psychiatric residency training centers in Indonesia. The study was conducted between August 2020 and February 2021. The translation process involved certified independent translators. The validity was tested using Item-Level Content Validity Index (I-CVI), Scale-Level Level Content Validity Index (S-CVI), and item-total correlation. Internal consistency reliability was measured using Cronbach's alpha. ResultsAfter translation, the instrument was sent back and received feedback from the original authors of DSS. The final version of DSS was valid with an I-CVI score of 0.84–1 and an S-CVI score of 0.99. All but one item had a corrected item-total correlation of more than 0.30. The reliability test of DSS also showed acceptable results with Cronbach's alpha values of 0.43–0.83, and an overall internal consistency score of 0.83 and 0.62 for intuitive and rational scales, respectively. ConclusionDSS serves as a valid, reliable, and readily-available tool to measure psychiatrists' decision-making styles in forensic psychiatry settings. Enhancing psychiatrists’ awareness of their decision-making styles may help in mitigating the risk of bias in forensic psychiatry evaluations.

THE COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN HUMAN TRANSLATION AND MACHINE TRANSLATION IN THE GIFT OF MAGI BY O. HENDRY TRANSLATED AS PEMBERIAN SANG MAJUS BY MAGGIE TIOJAKIN

Abstract
 This research aimed at comparing human translation and machine translation. The focus of the research was to find out which translation fulfilled the characteristics of a good translation: human translation or machine translation in the short storyThe Gift of Magi by O’Henry and the Indonesian Translation version Pemberian Sang Majus translated by Maggie Tiojakin. To analyze the data which were informof sentences, the qualitative method was used. After the analysis,it was found that the translation produced by a human was more accurate than the translation produced by a machine since human translation fulfills the characteristics of a good translation. Finally, the result of this finding can prove that people can use machine translation to help them to translate one language to another language, but they still need to read and revise them to make them more natural and understood in the target language.

Machine Translation in Website Localization: Assessing its Translation Quality for Language Learning

This study seeks to investigate the quality of translation generated by a popular Machine Translation (MT) platform, viz. Google Translate (GT) in translating the content of a Russian flight charterer’s website from English into Indonesian. To analyze the translation quality produced by MT, we compared the original translation of the website texts translated by a human translator and the machine-translated version. The translation quality is limited to the readability level. The texts serving as the data were collected from the menus of a Russian flight chartering service website which was originally translated by an Indonesian translator. An analysis further discovered that the translation produced by MT is divided into two quality categories: less readable and readable. The less readable translation is caused by MT’s inability to adjust to stylistic forms in Indonesian, failure to do adaptation strategy and in some cases, MT tends to follow the same sentence structure of the original text (source text).

A Review Of The Act Of Category-Shifts In Giving An Equivalence In French-Indonesian Novel Translation “Orang Asing” By Albert Camus

Translation is an action of transferring message from source language (SL) to target language (TL) by using the translation technique. The equivalence is a key that will help the reader in understanding the author’s information. In other words, the activity of translating must obey the technique and strategy in order to transmitting the real meaning of each sentences. This study aimed to reveal and describe the category-shifts and its purpose in Indonesian translation text of the novel “orang asing” by Albert Camus that has been translated from the French version “étranger”in giving an equivalence to the target language (TL). The focus of this study is to identify the type of category-shifts such as “structure-shifts, unit-shifts, class-shifts and intra-system-shifts” using the theory of Catford (1978). The methods using in this study is a qualitative design by Kothari (2004) which intend to do a literature study and observation in the data source. The result of the analysis shows that there are many shifting appear from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL). The first aspect provoke this shifting is the culture of the translators and the second aspect is influenced by the translator’s language style.

INDONESIAN TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF DESCRIPTIVE ADJECTIVES IN APPLE PRODUCTS’ SLOGANS

Apple, a technological company based in California, has one official Indonesian website. This website contains Indonesian product slogans translated from the English website. Since it conveys a product quality, a descriptive adjective is a language component frequently used in an Apple product slogan. This study aims to describe the Indonesian translation of descriptive adjectives in Apple products’ slogans. The result is two (2) translations referring to the literal translation strategy, one (1) referring to the free translation strategy, and one (1) referring to the creative translation strategy. As a brand component, a slogan and its translation are important in the development of a brand identity.
