Pragmatic Translation: Application of Relevance Theory in Film Dialogue Translation

As a type of cultural medium that transcends national boundaries, films are not only conveys rich story lines and profound theme thoughts, but also shows the charm of various languages in communication. Pragmatics, as a branch of linguistics, studies the meaning and function of language in practical use and provides crucial theoretical support and practical guidance for film dialogue translation. From the pragmatics point of view, film dialogue translation should not only pay attention to the accuracy of language, but also focus on the influence of context and culture on language comprehension. This paper aims to explore the principles and methods of film dialogue translation from the perspective of pragmatics, and to analyze how to achieve effective translation of film dialogue on the basis of maintaining the original style and emotional expression, in order to provide new ideas and methods for the practice and research of film translation.

Achieving ‘something that everybody has invested in’: perspectives of diverse stakeholders during co-creation of a transition to residency curriculum

Co-creation of education within the context of student inclusion alongside diverse stakeholders merits exploration. We studied the perspectives of students and teachers from different institutions who participated in co-creating a transition to residency curriculum. We conducted post-hoc in-depth interviews with 16 participants: final-year medical students, undergraduate, and postgraduate medical education stakeholders who were involved in the co-creation sessions. Findings build on the Framework of Stakeholders’ Involvement in Co-creation and identify the four key components of co-creation with diverse faculty: immersion in positive feelings of inclusivity and appreciation, exchange of knowledge, engagement in a state of reflection and analysis, and translation of co-creation dialogues into intended outcomes. Despite power dynamics, participants valued open communication, constructive feedback, mutual respect, and effective moderation. The study broadened our understanding of the co-creation process in diverse stakeholder settings. Incorporating key elements in the presence of power relations can enrich co-creation by leveraging wider expertise.

Analysis of the impact of VR technology based on big data edge computing and deep learning on English short video teaching

VR (Virtual Reality) technology applied to English short video teaching, compared with traditional English short video teaching can change the teacher-student interaction mode, providing students with a new English learning environment, making the classroom teaching content more realistic presentation. This paper focuses on VR scenario teaching and short video teaching, taking the English course of a school in Shanghai as an example. The students of VR situational teaching group have made great progress in vocabulary judgment, complementary dialogue and Chinese-English translation, with the passing rates of 43% and 100% respectively. The real scene created by virtual reality technology has greatly improved students' interest in learning and the effectiveness of classroom teaching. The development trend of educational informatization is virtualization and intellectualization. The application of virtual reality technology in the process of education and teaching is of great significance to the modernization of secondary education in China.

The pragmatic functions of tu and lei in films: Converging patterns of address across translated and original Italian dialogue

Address pronouns are strategies employed to position participants and express interpersonal meanings in real-life communication and on-screen. They straddle two areas of typological contrast as languages differ in terms of presence/absence of grammatical address and subject obligatoriness. In Italian, a binary distinction is established between the informal T-pronoun tu and the formal V-pronoun lei, while English lacks a T/V distinction. Concurrently, whereas English is an obligatory subject language, subject pronouns are as a rule optional in Italian. As no research has tackled the pragmatics of expressed address pronouns in film dialogue and audiovisual translation from English, the study investigates the occurrence of tu and lei in a corpus of original and dubbed Italian films and their discoursal and interpersonal functions. These were found to include shift of focus of attention, turn management, contrast, conflict, politeness and character's identification, variably associated with each address pronoun. The qualitative and quantitative analyses reveal noticeable convergence between translated and original dialogue, with dubbing reflecting the pragmatic expressiveness of domestic Italian films, while showing no shining through of the source language. Address pronouns play a crucial role in Italian film language, adding pragmatic weight to characters’ turns and enriching the dialogue intradiagetically and extradiagetically.

Upin & Ipin is a Malay-language-based animated series produced by Les’ Copaque Production that is televised to educate children about the month of Ramadan. Given the immensely positive reaction from the viewers, this animated series has been expanded in production and translated into a number of different languages, including Arabic, through the use of subtitling or dubbing. The dialogue translation process of this animated series employs Malay ‘pantun’ which are particularly difficult to translate into other languages. Many studies related to ‘pantun’ have been conducted, but the majority of them emphasised on the meaning and values found in the ‘pantun’. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate Malay ‘pantun’ in Upin & Ipin based on ‘pantun’ theories by Mat Piah (1989) and its translation into Arabic based on translation strategies by Vinay & Darbelnet (1958/1995) & Veisbergs (1997). The focus of this study is on the equivalence of Malay-Arabic ‘pantun’ translation, specifically in terms of translation strategies used, word selection, and ‘pantun’ rhyming. This is a descriptive study that takes a qualitative approach. The findings revealed that the majority of Malay ‘pantun’ in this animated series adhere to Mat Piah’s (1989) 'pantun' characteristics, and seven translation strategies were employed: literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation, addition, and omission. The researchers suggested that more studies on the translation of Malay animation into Arabic should be done from several perspectives, such as songs, cultural aspects, linguistic decency and so on.

Moral value of Nobita in subtitle of Stand By Me Doraemon 2

Background: Film acts as a new tool used to spread entertainment that has become a habit in the past and presents stories, events, music, drama, comedy and other technical offerings to the general public. Subtitling is a translation of film dialogue written at the bottom of a film. In other words, subtitles are in the form of text. And the purpose of translating the film or subtitle is to help viewers enjoy the storyline of the film they are watching. Purpose: This study aims to determine the moral values ​​of Nobita's character in the film Stand By Me Doraemon 2 through film subtitles. Design and methods: In this study, researchers used a qualitative approach with a qualitative descriptive research design and data collection techniques in this study used content analysis by analyzing the subtitles in the film Stan by Me Doraemon 2. Results: The results of the study, it was found that several characters in Nobita's character were: careless, not honest, lazy, loving, spoiled, crybaby, grumpy, passionate, outspoken, confident and brave. Of the existing characters, only a few characters are exemplary in everyday life, especially for elementary school students, such as compassionate, enthusiastic and brave.

Recent Advances in Dialogue Machine Translation

Recent years have seen a surge of interest in dialogue translation, which is a significant application task for machine translation (MT) technology. However, this has so far not been extensively explored due to its inherent characteristics including data limitation, discourse properties and personality traits. In this article, we give the first comprehensive review of dialogue MT, including well-defined problems (e.g., 4 perspectives), collected resources (e.g., 5 language pairs and 4 sub-domains), representative approaches (e.g., architecture, discourse phenomena and personality) and useful applications (e.g., hotel-booking chat system). After systematical investigation, we also build a state-of-the-art dialogue NMT system by leveraging a breadth of established approaches such as novel architectures, popular pre-training and advanced techniques. Encouragingly, we push the state-of-the-art performance up to 62.7 BLEU points on a commonly-used benchmark by using mBART pre-training. We hope that this survey paper could significantly promote the research in dialogue MT.

A Great Success Story: Galiani's Dialogues sur le commerce des blés in Spain (1774-1802)

The year 1775 witnessed the publication of the Spanish translation of Ferdi-nando Galiani's Dialogues sur le commerce des blés (1770). Although there is evi-dence that the book was very successful during the Spanish Enlightenment, the purpose of this work is to analyse in detail the impact of Galiani's Dialogues on late eighteenth century Spanish literature, using citation count methodology. The work concludes that Galiani's book was a decisive work in the shaping of econom-ic culture in Spain during the Spanish Enlightenment. Not only it was profusely quoted, but all its main economic theses were well received among the Spanish po-litical economists. Beyond the strategic debate on the grain trade, the book deci-sively contributed to outline central questions of the mainstream of the Spanish Enlightenment, such as those related to economic methodology and growth strate-gy. All this confirms that the Dialogues triumphed in Spain due to their powerful power of influence in the arena of economic policy.

Problems in Subtitling Cultural-Bound Expressions in “Theeb” Movie: A Case Study

Subtitling is a challenging task making subtitlers use precise strategies to improve the quality of the subtitles. This paper aims at identifying the subtitling strategies employed in subtitling the culture-bound terms in the Jordanian movie entitled “Theeb” and assessing the translation of such culture-bound terms. The dialect used in this movie is the Bedouin Jordanian Arabic. So, the translator faced two dilemmas: (1) Understanding the Bedouin Jordanian-Arabic dialect and understanding the dimensions and features of this distinguished culture. (2) Translating this work, which is loaded with cultural expressions, into English. Furthermore, the study deals with the issue of overcoming the difficulties faced by translation of Arabic-language audiovisual dialogues into English. To achieve the purpose of this study, the data was collected from the movie "Theeb" and then analyzed. The results show that not all the subtitling strategies were used. Those left unused were dislocation, condensation, decimation, and resignation strategies. Hence, this article critically evaluates this subtitling, exposing pitfalls and offering more efficient renderings in a practical context.

KESALAHAN PENERJEMAHAN DRAMA JEPANG ICHI RITTORU NO NAMIDA KARYA MASANORI MURAKAMI

This study discusses the translation errors of the Indonesian subtitles from the Japanese drama Ichi Rittoru no Namida ‘One Liter Tears’ by Masanori Murakami, released at Fuji Terebi in 2005. There is no reference to similar study about the translation of oral dialogues of Japanese characters who were later translated into in Indonesian is of interest in this study. This study aims to identify the variety of Japanese drama Ichi Rittoru no Namida’s translation errors (subtitles). The formulation of the problem is examined with translation theory, types of translations and translation strategies. Furthermore, the data of this study are sentences or conversations in Japanese as the source language (SL) and Indonesian (subtitle) as the target language (TL) taken from episodes 1 to 6. The data are described using descriptive-qualitative methods. The results of this study are translation errors identified in diction choices, excessive use of words, grammatical errors, shifts in translation and errors due to cultural influences. Some examples of findings include the choice of diction like the word touzen translates to ‘legitimate’, excessive use of words such as the word gomen ne to ‘I am very sorry’, grammatical errors such as the phrase kondo no kusuri traced to ‘the medicine he is taking’, the translation shift as in the noun phrase todoufuken ga shiteishita ishi no shindansho it becomes ‘specified special health service’ and errors due to cultural influences such as the yoroshiku expression becomes ‘dependent on you’. Looking behind the scenes: an analysis of dialogue lists for Ocean's Eleven

ABSTRACT In this article we consider the process involved in creating foreign language versions of feature films by describing and analysing paratextual elements in the dialogue list for the audiovisual source text Ocean's Eleven. We aim to assess the potential translational impact of this accompanying material on the final product and to offer insights into the complex mediation process that lies at the heart of the linguistic transfer in audiovisual translation. Our analysis initially starts out from Scene 12, the common thread focused on in the volume, but widens to consider the strategic role of paratextual elements such as translator's notes in the translation of dialogues in the whole film. The approach adopted is descriptive-qualitative as it aims to first disclose the most typical and frequent annotation types and highlight the semantic, pragmatic, and narrative aims they pursue in each case, and then to relate them with the options adopted in the dubbed dialogues. More than offering conclusive results, the study aims at opening up research into the process of translation in the context of audiovisual communication, by means of integrating descriptive analyses of the translated product and an informed consideration of professional practices that are part and parcel of the post-production process, focusing in particular on paratextual materials for the use of translators.

Dialogue Translation Shift Analysis in Karyamin’s Smile by Ahmad Tohari

A dialogue carries feelings and thoughts of a character in a story. It might also convey emotional expressions. In the translating process, emotional expression, one of many factors which needs to be considered, is regarded as expressive meaning. Thus, in translating dialogues, it is necessary to preserve the emotional expression of the source language. As translation process involves two different languages, there could be changes occurred from ST to TT. Therefore, this study aims to use translation shift to seek the changes in dialogue translation in some short stories in Karyamin’s Smile. This research is a qualitative-descriptive analysis as it proposes to identify the types of shift used in dialogue translation and analyze the equivalence to the ST. The dialogues that have been categorized were examined the equivalence using a translation assessment rubric proposed by Khanmohammad and Osanloo (2009). The result shows that each type of shift used more or less affects the equivalence of dialogue translation. The types of shift that are mostly appeared are structure shift and unit shift. Those types produce some patterns. The patterns found in structure shift are passive to active forms, affirmative to interrogative sentence, affirmative to imperative sentence. In unit shift, the patterns found are word to phrase, phrase to sentence, and word to sentence. In sum, structure shift can create more significant changes compared to unit shift as the patterns found mostly result in the changing intention of dialogues.

<p>This study aims to describe the contrastive analysis of translational dialogue in the novel "Terrorist" between the results of the English-Indonesian and English-Arabic translations, and to describe the efforts of translators in localizing the values of tawassuth reflected in variations of such dialogue translation. The main data source of the research is the novel "Terrorist" by John Updike along with its translation into Indonesian by Abdul Malik and into Arabic by Ahmed el-Syaimy. The study was designed through descriptive-qualitative methods. Data collection uses purposive sampling where the results were discussed through contrastive analysis methods. The results showed that there were three main causes for the similarity of the tawassuth values localization in the translation results. First, the level of availability of formal and dynamic equivalents. Secondly, translators' efforts in overcoming linguistic insufficiency. Third, translators' appreciation of certain expressions or terms.</p>

Procedures of Translating Dialogue in Carroll’s "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" from English into Indonesian

Translation is one activity which needs strategy. In translation there are many strategies which can be used to translate one language to another language. There are technique, method, strategy and procedure. In this study, the researcher provides vivid comprehension on how the translator used the translation procedures to render the meaning of the dialogue. The study attempted to focus on the dialogue translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and its Indonesian version translated by Agustina Reni Eta Sitepoe. The objectives of the study were to describe the translation procedures used in translating the dialogue in the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland novel. In conducting this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative approach. This study applied the theory proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (in Hatim and Munday 2004:30) about translation procedures. The data in this study were words, phrases, clauses and sentences in the form of utterances in the dialog of the novel. The results of the study showed that there were 213 data of dialogues and seven translation procedures found in this study. The seven translation procedures were transposition, literal translation, modulation, adaptation, equivalence, calque, and borrowing. The translation procedures mostly used was transposition (76.99%), followed by literal translation (8.92%), modulation (7.98%), adaptation (2.81%), equivalence (1.87%), calque (1.40%), and borrowing (0.46%).&#x0D; &#x0D; Keywords: Translation Procedures; Dialogues; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; English into Indonesia

A literatura e as histórias em quadrinhos (HQs) são linguagem distintas, mas têm pontos em comum. Este trabalho tem como foco um deles: o diálogo. Apresentam-se alguns aspectos da linguagem das HQs no que tange às falas, seu caráter oral e as tendências de seu uso no português brasileiro. Sugere-se que a interseção desses aspectos corresponde a uma série de propostas defendidas por Britto (2012) a respeito do efeito de oralidade da tradução de diálogos na ficção literária. Por fim, propõe-se que as HQs da Turma da Mônica podem servir de modelo para a tradução de diálogos na literatura infantojuvenil.&#x0D;
