A Proposed Concept for Developing School Administration in Light of Edward Deming's Quality Standards

The aim of this study was to present a proposed framework for the development and improvement of educational administration in light of the quality standards set by Edward Deming as a measure of quality. This is intended to enhance the educational level and work towards performance improvement by providing a set of strategies related to processes and organizational structures that lead to continuous improvement within educational institutions. This study relied on a descriptive approach through the presentation and analysis of concepts and key elements addressed in the analytical meta-analysis method. Finally, the researcher recommends the adoption of total quality management by educational institutions and emphasizes the support of administrative leadership for this philosophy, in order to create a new organizational culture based on standards that measure educational quality in various domains.

Implementing total quality management in a virtual organisation: thoughts and lessons from an interventionist approach

PurposeThis article aims to understand the challenges and key takeaways of implementing total quality management (TQM) in a virtual organisation.Design/methodology/approachAn interventionist research (IVR) methodology combined with a qualitative critical event analysis was used to evaluate the challenges and concerns faced during the company’s adoption of TQM and understand the roles of the key players involved.FindingsStandard process tools such as desktop procedures (DTP), focused teams, and service-level agreements (SLAs) were fundamental to implementing TQM in the company. These processes require the right leaders, but external agents may also be influential, acting as accelerators of change in adopting and using management practices in small companies. Indeed, the researcher acted as a problem solver, bringing innovative solutions to the firm using a hands-on iterative approach.Practical implicationsThis research underscores the importance of critical success factors (CSF), such as employee engagement, training, and project management tools. These factors are not just important but crucial for the success of TQM in organisations seeking to adopt the industry’s best practices.Originality/valueThis study, conducted as a virtual IVR for TQM implementation, provides novel insights for practitioners and academics. It elucidates the pivotal role of some quality management tools in the journey towards TQM and the role of both internal and external critical players in the process, particularly in small virtual organisations based on innovative business models.

Exploratory study of the influence of the adoption of total quality management on the level of neonatal mortality in Moroccan hospitals

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of the adoption of total quality management (TQM) practices on neonatal mortality rates within Moroccan hospitals. An exploratory qualitative methodology was adopted. The dataset comprised qualitative inputs from 12 face to face interviews with hospital management staff and associated stakeholders. The study revealed several factors affecting the adoption of TQM practices in Moroccan hospitals, including human resource constraints, financial and material resource deficiencies, lack of leadership, and gaps in the quality of services provided. Moreover, while TQM practices significantly influence neonatal mortality rates, other external factors, such as accessibility to hospitals, infrastructure, and patient care quality, also play crucial roles. There’s a clear intertwining of neonatal mortality rates with the broader healthcare management dynamics. The findings underscore the need for Moroccan hospitals to adopt a comprehensive approach to TQM. This not only involves addressing internal managerial and operational challenges but also considering broader systemic issues within the healthcare ecosystem. Embracing TQM holistically could pave the way for improved neonatal care outcomes and reduced mortality rates. Additionally, understanding patient perspectives, especially those of pregnant women and recent mothers, can further enhance the quality of healthcare delivery in the region.

Among these crucial methods is the adoption of Total Quality Management (TQM) to achieve a competitive advantage for infant formula companies in local and global markets Total Quality Management is a fundamental element for improving a company's competitiveness and ensuring its continuity and success. TQM effectively contributes to enhancing organizational performance and achieving operational and production objectives by focusing on employee efficiency and achieving organizational unity in performance. The implementation of Total Quality Management requires companies to adhere to recognized quality standards and practices, continuously improve processes, and work towards achieving customer satisfaction. Total Quality Management is an ongoing process and not time-bound; it does not end when a company meets a quality standard. Therefore, quality management is built on performing tasks correctly from the beginning to prevent the repetition of mistakes. It serves as a proactive and strategic approach that replaces the need for rework. Perceived Staff Motivation on the Adoption of Total Quality Management Practices in Nigeria

This study explores the relationship between employee motivation and the effective adoption of Total Quality Management (TQM) within modern organizational contexts in Nigeria. TQM, renowned for its all-encompassing strategy for continual enhancement, is widely recognized for its positive impact on product and service quality, employee involvement, and overall organizational effectiveness. Despite these well-documented benefits, the pivotal role of motivation in cultivating a TQM culture represents a critical yet insufficiently examined dimension. This study adopts a quantitative method using a closed-ended self-administered questionnaire to investigate the connections between motivation and TQM. The research focuses on assessing the levels of employee motivation within organizations practising TQM principles. It examines the resulting impact on various TQM dimensions, such as employee involvement and service quality. The findings revealed that staff motivation through intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation significantly affects the involvement of employees and the service quality of the selected deposit money banks in the Ilorin metropolis. The findings of this research highlight the importance of motivation in influencing TQM practices. Organizations should be mindful of the balance between intrinsic and extrinsic motivators to foster a work environment that promotes long-term commitment and performance. Practically, the results can guide organizations in developing and implementing strategies to motivate staff in a way that supports the successful implementation of TQM practices. The findings contributed significantly to the existing body of knowledge by elucidating the critical role motivation plays in shaping TQM practices.

Influence of Leadership Style on TQM Implementation in Champions Breweries, PLC, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

This study examined the influence of leadership style on Total Quality Management (TQM) implementation effectiveness at Champions Breweries in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Successful TQM adoption relies on leadership approaches that empower employees and catalyse engagement in continuous improvement. However, research shows authoritarian leadership styles focused on control remain prevalent in Nigerian firms, potentially hindering quality management. However, only some studies have quantitatively assessed the linkage between leadership style and TQM success in the Nigerian context. This study, addressed this gap by investigating whether Champions Breweries' leadership style impacted the effectiveness of TQM implementation. Quantitative survey methodology, gathered data from 218 employees on perceptions of leadership behaviours and TQM programme success. Descriptive statistics, revealed that an authoritarian leadership style, characterised by top-down decision-making, command-and-control behaviours, and limited employee empowerment prevailed. ANOVA results demonstrated a significant relationship between this authoritarian leadership style and reduced TQM implementation success. The findings align with studies showing that authoritative approaches focused on control rather than empowerment undermine quality management through reduced engagement and initiative-taking. To strengthen TQM outcomes, Champions Breweries should implement leadership training focused on participative management skills, decentralise organisational structure, and align talent management systems, to participative leadership. The study, provides empirical evidence that leadership style significantly impacts TQM success in Nigerian firms. Evolving from authoritarian paradigms is essential to build cultures of quality, which should be predicted on leadership training, reform performance management and rewards system amongst other as some of the recommendation.

The Impact of Harnessing Total Quality Management Studies on the Performance of Smart Applications: A study in Public and Private Sectors in the UAE

This study explores the complex environment of smart applications technology in the UAE's public and private sectors, looking into the complex interactions between technological adaptability and accessibility as well as the effects of Total Quality Management (TQM) studies presented by policies and regulations. Data was collected by a multistage sampling strategy, mixing probability and non-probability methods, using a cross-sectional research design. To ensure impartial item creation and adherence to best practices, a pretested questionnaire underwent extensive examination. Through the revelation of unexpected results, the research tests and expands upon the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). There is a request for an enlarged TAM framework because there is no substantial correlation found between accessibility and the performance of smart applications. A negative link is resulted, unexpectedly, between technology adaptation and TQM adoption, underscoring the necessity of a cautious integration strategy. The report also emphasizes how important TQM policies and regulations are to the functioning of smart applications, supporting the need for a thorough TAM framework that takes in regulatory dynamics into consideration. Barriers to TQM implementation in SMEs in Bangladesh: an interpretive structural modeling approach

PurposeThis study aims to recognize the significant barriers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bangladesh, hindering the adoption of total quality management (TQM). Additionally, this research intends to explore the interrelations among these barriers to develop essential managerial insights for promoting TQM implementation in SMEs.Design/methodology/approachThe interpretive structural modeling (ISM) approach and Matrice d'impacts croisés multiplication appliquée á un classment (MICMAC) a cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification show the relationship among the barriers and classification of the barriers to TQM implementation respectively, and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) is applied for ISM model validation.FindingsThis study examined previous literature and conducted interviews with professionals to identify 17 barriers. The study then develops and investigates a model that outlines the relationships and priorities among these barriers and categorizes them based on their impact and interdependence. This analysis can assist SMEs in implementing TQM during their operations successfully.Practical implicationsThis research emphasizes the crucial obstacles that greatly affect other barriers and require immediate attention. Furthermore, this study provides valuable information for SMEs to effectively prioritize their resources and efforts to overcome these obstacles.Originality/valueThis study delves into the primary obstacles impeding the integration of TQM in SMEs through a novel approach. Additionally, this study constructs a verified contextual framework that depicts the hierarchies and interconnections among these barriers.

Assessing The Benefit of Adopting TQM Philosophy and Green Supply Chain Management Towards Sustainable Operations: An Evidence from Textile Industries of Pakistan

This research paper delves into the examination of the advantages associated with the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) and Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices in Pakistan's textile industry to foster sustainable operations. The study discovers that the adoption of TQM and GSCM practices yields positive outcomes for sustainable operations, encompassing improvements in product quality, operational efficiency, and environmental preservation. Nonetheless, certain barriers impede the implementation process, including a lack of awareness, limited resources, and resistance to change. The study puts forth several recommendations tailored to the textile industry, encompassing leadership commitment, employee training initiatives, supplier collaboration, and the integration of sustainability principles into the organizational culture. Blending “hard” and “soft” TQM for academic excellence: the University of Siena experience in the field of Life Sciences

PurposeFocusing on the adoption of Total Quality Management (TQM) principles in universities, this research paper explores how the “soft” dimensions of TQM trigger its “hard” dimensions considering them at the individual (micro-) and the university (meso-), and eventually at cluster (system-), levels.Design/methodology/approachAdopting a qualitative approach, this study presents an in-depth, longitudinal case study of University of Siena, one of the oldest Italian universities, that has been at the core of the research-based cluster on vaccines, today converged in the Tuscan Life Science Cluster. In particular, data were collected between 2018 and February 2022 and consists of archival data (press articles, websites, books), nine interviews to key informants, multiyear experience of the Life Sciences sector by two of the authors and other material put at disposal by university offices, and emails. Data analysis relied on a timeline, a coding procedure that considered three levels of analysis (individual, organization and cluster). Finally, the authors looked at the “how” and “why” the emerged themes have contributed to academic excellence.FindingsThis paper unveils how “soft” and “hard” sides of TQM are blended across multiple levels for reaching academic excellence. The grounded model emerged enlightens the importance of an individual “soft” dimension, academic passion (composed by its three subdimensions of individual research, teaching and entrepreneurial passion) and also sheds light on the organizational “soft” and “hard” sides that the university has been able to design for encouraging research, teaching and third mission quality. Academic excellence has been possible thanks to the capitalization of the individual and organizational “soft” sides into real outcomes as represented by the organizational and individual “hard” sides.Practical implicationsThe paper suggests the importance of TQM principles applied at universities' level, providing an in-depth description of “soft” and “hard” sides dimensions of TQM and their impact on all the three pillars of academic excellence. The study findings suggest implications for managers and professionals in the higher education domain as well as for policymakers emphasizing the importance of supporting the individual and organizational soft sides of TQM. The authors provide practical implications recommending universities to consider not only the organizational dimensions but also individual ones when pursuing higher education excellence. In particular, individual passion plays a crucial role and universities need to identify ways of nurturing it. The authors also recommend policymakers to think about new ways to sustain universities as crucial actors in boosting a cluster development, as well as to consider higher education institutions, especially in more rural areas, as a privileged player not only capable of nurturing academic excellence but also able of creating an internationally renowned cluster.Originality/valueTQM principles have been intensively analysed from an industrial perspective focusing on manufacturing and services, while this paper focuses on TQM in universities, presenting a grounded model that blends the individual and organizational “soft” and “hard” sides.

The Role of the Total-Quality-Management (TQM) Drivers in Overcoming the Challenges of Implementing TQM in Industrialized-Building-System (IBS) Projects in Malaysia: Experts’ Perspectives

Total quality management (TQM) is a systematic management technique for developing a process-driven culture inside an organization to achieve quality and customer and employee satisfaction. TQM has started to impact global business systems, and is extensively regarded as a management “revolution”. The implementation of TQM in the industrialized building system (IBS) in Malaysian projects has not been treated in much detail, although it is essential. This research intended to assess TQM adoption in IBS projects and identify how TQM drivers will help to overcome TQM-implementation challenges. This study utilized the mixed method by developing a semi-structured interview and survey, while the respondents were experts from TQM and IBS consulting firms. The content-validity approach was used, depending on 14 interviews and 28 responses to a distributed questionnaire. The findings indicate that TQM adoption of IBS projects is extremely poor. According to experts, local firms are still unable to execute TQM because they are reluctant to implement the TQM system as a strategy implementation across the construction process. Furthermore, according to the content validity ratio (CVR), there was an agreement that TQM would provide substantial benefits to IBS projects, such as offering cooperative associations, excellent communication, enhanced customer gratification, cost reductions, and productivity improvements. This study provided practical evidence of the fact that if the organizations adopted these 23 drivers of TQM they could overwhelm the challenges of TQM implementation in IBS projects. Thus, the stated factors were trustworthy, as indicated in the transcripts of interviews, and relying on the plurality of expert assessments. This study offers a valuable list of challenges and drivers for managers of the projects as guidelines to help them adopt TQM in IBS projects.

Identifying the critical success factors of total quality management implementation in manufacturing industry of Pakistan: an exploratory factor analysis

Total quality management (TQM) is a management philosophy that focuses on continuous quality improvement across all parts of a company. Its key goals are to satisfy customers and stay in business. As a result, it's critical to identify the elements that lead to successful TQM implementation. This study also proposed a framework that helps organizations in their success. To achieve this goal, various critical success factors (CSFs) that contribute to organizational growth success were identified. The major purpose of this research is to identify critical success factors for TQM implementation in the manufacturing industry. For this aim, the study was deployed from an extensive literature review, and the questionnaire was used as a research instrument to specify the essential CSFs in different manufacturing industries. Around 300 questionnaires were issued to top management of manufacturing enterprises in Sindh Pakistan (both public and commercial sectors). The structured survey received 82 valid responses, which were then analyzed by using factor analysis. Finally, the study's findings highlighted the five CSFs (customer satisfaction, employee involvement, training and education, continuous improvement, employee encouragement, and service quality) as the most important aspects in building an effective framework for successful TQM adoption in manufacturing industries. The findings of this study will assist senior management in the implementation of a TQM program and resource allocation that will produce the greatest results in terms of increased returns and stakeholder value.

The Impact of Hospital Demographic Factors on Total Quality Management Implementation: A Case Study of UAE Hospitals

Aim: Maintaining service quality and value using quality and management tools is crucial in any organization. In essence, improving service quality boosts both efficiency of organizations and consumer pleasure. The deployment of quality development programs such as Total Quality Management (TQM) is one technique that businesses may employ to deliver exceptional customer service. The health sector, in particular, is one of the industries that require TQM adoption due to its complexity and the need for constant service improvement. TQM helps to improve service quality in health facilities through advanced clinical and administrative procedures. This research comprehensively assesses TQM levels and the impact of hospital demographics on its implementation process in hospitals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methods: The study used a quantitative research strategy based on a survey study design. Questionnaires were used to gather primary data from respondents deployed a self-administered technique. 1850 questionnaires were delivered to the hospital's senior staff based on their number in each hospital. Of the 1850 questionnaires distributed, 1238 usable questionnaires were analyzed, yielding a response rate of 66.9%. The study used a binary logistic regression model to determine if hospital demographics affected TQM implementation. The study data were examined and analysed using version 25.0 of the SPSS software. Results: The results show that most of the health facilities with an overall TQM between 4.12 and 4.82 were utilized, governmental, accredited and utilized and large hospitals, while the hospitals with a mean between 2.91 and 3.45 were small, unaccredited private, and non-specialised. Thus, large hospitals have a higher TQM utilization rate than small hospitals. In addition, the findings of the t-test revealed that a high TQM is represented by means of 4.68, 4.67, 4.43, and 4.12 for accredited, utilized, governmental and large hospitals. The binary regression analysis also reveals similar results: large, governmental, utilized and accredited hospitals have greater chances of TQM adoption than other categories of hospitals (Exp (B): 1.2; 95%CI: 1.001 – 1.421, P< .05); (Exp (B): 1.3; 95%CI: 1.012 – 1.721, P< .05); (Exp (B): 1.5; 95%CI: 1.127 – 2.051, P< .01); and (Exp (B): 1.5; 95%CI: 1.102 – 2.012, P< .05); correspondingly. Another observation from the results is that hospitals that implemented technological tools had a greater chance of successfully executing the TQM program than hospitals that did not utilize advanced technologies due to the limited availability of resources (Exp (B): 1.7; 95%CI: 1.332 – 2.187, P< .01). Conclusion: Even though health facilities need to adopt TQM, its implementation depends on the hospital size and demographics that significantly influence the adoption of TQM programs. However, this study will help bridge the current gap on the usage of TQM in the health context by examine the influence of demographic factors on adopting TQM in hospitals. Hence, provide adequate information to help the UAE hospital administrators appropriately execute the TQM program in the hospitals and enhance the efficacy of their operations.

Quality Management in Indonesia Maritime Education: Is it well implemented?

The adoption of Total Quality Management (TQM) in educational institutions has not been thoroughly optimized, resulting in a wide range of results. This study aims to determine the key features of TQM used by maritime education and training institutes in Indonesia and the results. This study used descriptive quantitative methodologies using eleven institutions, the most extensively used TQM elements as measuring variables, and the findings. The respondents are 16 members of the institution's quality management team. Strategic quality planning (5.99), information and analysis (5.90), involvement of teaching staff and employees (5.86), knowledge and training (5.80), leadership and top management commitment (5.76), and process management were found to be the most often used TQM elements (5.76). Meanwhile, the most significant results of TQM implementation in the sample institutions were improving operational performance (6.06), teaching staff and employee satisfaction (5.90), and customer satisfaction (5.79). This study adds to the empirical literature on TQM in Indonesian maritime educational institutions by identifying the most often used TQM elements and the result achieved.

Impact of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices on Sustainability and Organisational Performance

Total quality management (TQM) has been identified as a key driver of organizational performance in public and private organizations. Organizational culture, along with TQM and sustainability has been investigated to understand its contributions to organizational performance. TQM has become a crucial pillar for growth and development due to the growing expansion of manufacturing sectors of the world. TQM practices, which may differ in manufacturing firms, are said to be important for effective TQM adoption. However, it was found that organizational performance can be achieved if TQM practices in manufacturing businesses are well managed. Therefore, this study is carried out and the purpose of the study is to propose a conceptual model to investigate the relationship between TQM practices, sustainability, and organizational performance and to demonstrate the impact on organizational performance. The data underlying this study was collected by using a questionnaire survey in the manufacturing industries. The tool of analysis was used for the study through Factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The findings of the study revealed that total quality management and sustainability are the most important approaches to the success of the performance of manufacturing industries. The results show that TQM and sustainability have a positive impact on organizational performance. In the radiance of these outcomes, a framework was created in view of relationship between significant practices of TQM, sustaibanility and organistaional performance. Generally, it is accepted that total quality management can produce a sustainable competitive benefits in organisational performance.

A HYBRID STRATEGY APPROACH IN BUSINESS PERFORMANCE EMPLOYING TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT AND ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP IN THE PAKISTANI SMEs

This research is concentrated on the adoption of total quality management and entrepreneurial leadership in the manufacturing sector to examine its impact on the organizational performance. The research has been carried out in manufacturing sector of small medium enterprises (SMEs). A primary data with self-administered questionnaire was employed to gather data from the respondents. 450 survey items were distributed randomly among respondents, out of which 306 were returned and then subsequently 300 employed in the analysis. The collected data was analyzed with the help of the structural equation modelling technique. However, very little research provides a conceptual model to show such relationship based upon the suggestions of the theoretical literature. Hence, this research addresses a gap in the context of SMEs in Pakistan regarding the disparity in the present literature as well. Thus, findings are also crucial to design interventions like total quality management on the entrepreneurial leadership attributes for enhancing organizational performance. Findings of current study signifies both the theoretical and practical contribution for the policy makers and practitioners

IMPACT OF ISO TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES ON DEPARTMENT OF MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS AND TRANSPORT

Total quality management (TQM) is a collection of strategies for constantly improvement inside organisations. The government of UAE has made considerable measures towards the adoption of TQM. Despite that, many organisations in UAE are not able to adopt the principles of TQM. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of TQM principles proposed by the International Organization for Standardization on Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport quality. This study employed quantitative technique to address research questions. The conclusion of this study reveals that department of municipal affairs and transport industries need to adopt the principles of TQM according to the seven principles of ISO to achieve high Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport Quality. This study recommends that transport industries in UAE should establish a department of quality office in each college headed by specialist managers in TQM who will be responsible for following-up and monitoring the application of TQM like continuous improvement, teamwork spirit, and sharing decision-making.

The role of organisational culture in total quality management adoption and cost of quality

Organisational Culture (OC) is related to the implementation of TQM, while both are associated with the economic aspect of TQM meaning the Cost of Quality (CoQ). The present study aims to investigate the impact of different types of OC, namely group, developmental, rational and hierarchical culture on TQM and CoQ. Moreover, the study aims at determining the impact of TQM on CoC and CoNC. Greek manufacturing and service companies were approached through a structured questionnaire and 292 participated in the study. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was applied to examine the reliability and validity of latent constructs, the relationships of which were determined through Multiple Linear Regression analyses. According to the findings, all the cultural types have a positive impact on TQM. TQM has a significant and positive impact on CoC and a negative influence on CoNC. Finally, CoC is significantly influenced by two types of OC (developmental culture and hierarchical culture), while CoNC is directly affected only by rational culture. This study offers clear implications for managers who want to fully adopt TQM and improve CoQ by reinforcing specific OC types. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous research has discussed these relationships in the Greek business environment.

Quality is Never an Accident: A Survey on the Total Quality-Management Practices amongst Selected Higher Education Institutions in the Philippines

Total Quality Management (TQM) is regarded as a gauge of university management, in order to maintain global standards. This study examined Total Quality-Management (TQM) implementation and the practices of higher education institutions in the Philippines. It utilized a cross-sectional survey-study design to 347 respondents recruited from the total population of 3847 administrators and academic members of nine selected institutions in the Philippines. The measure of TQM adoption and practices was extracted from several sources of previous TQM researches. This study was done for six months. The analyzation and interpretation of the data were done by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that participating Filipino HEIs had a high degree of adoption on top-management commitment, Teaching and Learning Delivery Modes, campus amenities, system and process management, customer satisfaction, and linkages. In contrast, the HEIs have a modest degree of acceptance in strategic planning and Data Management. The test of differences indicated that strong confirmation to top management commitment and strategic planning as indicators of TQM is significantly more evident in private-type HEIs; and it was placed at the university level, when compared to those of the provincial and national HEIs. The findings provide some practical implications to further enhance Filipino HEIs in the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Potential of Design Thinking and Total Quality Management in Creating Public Value

Abstract One of the most fashionable management concepts currently is Design Thinking (DT). DT is sometimes advertised as the creative and innovative method for handling wicked problems. The explosion of DT in the public sector resembles the fast adoption of Total Quality Management (TQM) a few decades ago. At first sight, DT and TQM appear mutually exclusive – the former emphasizes inventiveness, which is cherished in modern governance, while the latter stresses mechanistic solutions and seems obsolete. Yet, public managers need a clearer understanding of DT and TQM and how they relate to each other. The main aim of this paper is two analyze when public managers should employ DT and when they should use TQM in creating public value. The article compares DT and TQM and finds that they are surprisingly similar. For example, they share core values like user-centeredness, stakeholder commitment, cooperation, etc. That is not to say that DT and TQM are the same, for instance their tools are different. Still, the paper argues that the two management models could well be combined – e.g. DT could assist public managers in finding new solutions to known problems and TQM could be used to institutionalize change. This insight helps managers to make informed decisions when choosing a mix of management methods that fits their purpose best.
