Core-Hole Coherent Spectroscopy in Molecules.

We study the ultrafast dynamics initiated by a coherent superposition of core-excited states of nitrous oxide molecule. Using high-level abinitio methods, we show that the decoherence caused by the electronic decay and the nuclear dynamics is substantially slower than the induced ultrafast quantum beatings, allowing the system to undergo several oscillations before it dephases. We propose a proof-of-concept experiment using the harmonic up-conversion scheme available at x-ray free-electron laser facilities to trace the evolution of the created core-excited-state coherence through a time-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Chemical bond reorganization in intramolecular proton transfer revealed by ultrafast X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-XPS) is used in a simulation study to monitor the excited state intramolecular proton transfer between oxygen and nitrogen atoms in 2-(iminomethyl)phenol. Real-time monitoring of the chemical bond breaking and forming processes is obtained through the time evolution of excited-state chemical shifts. By employing individual atomic probes of the proton donor and acceptor atoms, we predict distinct signals with opposite chemical shifts of the donor and acceptor groups during proton transfer. Details of the ultrafast bond breaking and forming dynamics are revealed by extending the classical electron spectroscopy chemical analysis to real time. Through a comparison with simulated time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy at the valence level, the distinct advantage of TR-XPS is demonstrated thanks to its atom specificity.

Out-of-equilibrium charge redistribution in a copper-oxide based superconductor by time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Charge-transfer excitations are of paramount importance for understanding the electronic structure of copper-oxide based high-temperature superconductors. Element-selective time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with a high energy resolution allows disentangling the dynamics of oxygen ions with different coordination and bonds thanks to their different chemical shifts. Our experiment shows that the O 1s component arising from the Cu–O planes is significantly perturbed by the infrared light pulse. Conversely, the apical oxygen, also coordinated with Sr ions in the Sr-O planes, remains unaffected. This result highlights the peculiar behavior of the electronic structure of the Cu–O planes. It also unlocks the way to study the out-of-equilibrium electronic structure of copper-oxide-based high-temperature superconductors by identifying the O 1s core-level emission originating from the oxygen ions in the Cu–O planes. This ability could be critical to gain information about the strongly-correlated electron ultrafast dynamical mechanisms in the Cu–O plane in the normal and superconducting phases.

Temperature-Dependent Selectivity and Detection of Hidden Carbon Deposition in Methane Oxidation.

Reaction products in heterogeneous catalysis can be detected either on the catalyst surface or in the gas phase after desorption. However, if atoms are dissolved in the catalyst bulk, then reaction channels can become hidden. This is the case if the dissolution rate of the deposits is faster than their formation rate. This might lead to the underestimation or even overlooking of reaction channels such as, e.g., carbon deposition during hydrocarbon oxidation reactions, which is problematic as carbon can have a significant influence on the catalytic activity. Here, we demonstrate how such hidden deposition channels can be uncovered by carefully measuring the product formation rates in the local gas phase just above the catalyst surface with time-resolved ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a case study, we investigate methane oxidation on a polycrystalline Pd catalyst in an oxygen-lean environment at a few millibar pressure. By ramping the temperature between 350 and 525 °C, we follow the time evolution of the different reaction pathways. Only in the oxygen mass-transfer limit do we observe CO production, while our data suggests that carbon deposition also happens outside this limit.

Rebuilding the vibrational wavepacket in TRAS using attosecond X-ray pulses

Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TXPS) is a well-established technique to probe coherent nuclear wavepacket dynamics using both table-top and free-electron-based ultrafast X-ray lasers. Energy resolution, however, becomes compromised for a very short pulse duration in the sub-femtosecond range. By resonantly tuning the X-ray pulse to core-excited states undergoing Auger decay, this drawback of TXPS can be mitigated. While resonant Auger-electron spectroscopy (RAS) can recover the vibrational structures not hidden by broadband excitation, the full reconstruction of the wavepacket is a standing challenge. Here, we theoretically demonstrate how the complete information of a nuclear wavepacket, i.e., the populations and relative phases of the vibrational states constituting the wavepacket, can be retrieved from time-resolved RAS (TRAS) measurements. Thus, TRAS offers key insights into coupled nuclear and electronic dynamics in complex systems on ultrashort timescales, providing an alternative to leverage femtosecond and attosecond X-ray probe pulses.

Time-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy: Ultrafast Dynamics in CS2 Probed at the S 2p Edge.

Recent developments in X-ray free-electron lasers have enabled a novel site-selective probe of coupled nuclear and electronic dynamics in photoexcited molecules, time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TRXPS). We present results from a joint experimental and theoretical TRXPS study of the well-characterized ultraviolet photodissociation of CS2, a prototypical system for understanding non-adiabatic dynamics. These results demonstrate that the sulfur 2p binding energy is sensitive to changes in the nuclear structure following photoexcitation, which ultimately leads to dissociation into CS and S photoproducts. We are able to assign the main X-ray spectroscopic features to the CS and S products via comparison to a first-principles determination of the TRXPS based on ab initio multiple-spawning simulations. Our results demonstrate the use of TRXPS as a local probe of complex ultrafast photodissociation dynamics involving multimodal vibrational coupling, nonradiative transitions between electronic states, and multiple final product channels.

Dynamic Electrode–Electrolyte Intermixing in Solid-State Sodium Nano-Batteries

Nanostructured solid-state batteries (SSBs) are poised to meet the demands of next-generation energy storage technologies by realizing performance competitive to their liquid-based counterparts while simultaneously offering improved safety and expanded form factors. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is among the tools essential to fabricate nanostructured devices with challenging aspect ratios. Here, we report the fabrication and electrochemical testing of the first nanoscale sodium all-solid-state battery (SSB) using ALD to deposit both the V2O5 cathode and NaPON solid electrolyte followed by evaporation of a thin-film Na metal anode. NaPON exhibits remarkable stability against evaporated Na metal, showing no electrolyte breakdown or significant interphase formation in the voltage range of 0.05-6.0 V vs Na/Na+. Electrochemical analysis of the SSB suggests intermixing of the NaPON/V2O5 layers during fabrication, which we investigate in three ways: in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry, time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profiling, and cross-sectional cryo-scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM) coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). We characterize the interfacial reaction during the ALD NaPON deposition on V2O5 to be twofold: (1) reduction of V2O5 to VO2 and (2) Na+ insertion into VO2 to form NaxVO2. Despite the intermixing of NaPON-V2O5, we demonstrate that NaPON-coated V2O5 electrodes display enhanced electrochemical cycling stability in liquid-electrolyte coin cells through the formation of a stable electrolyte interphase. In all-SSBs, the Na metal evaporation process is found to intensify the intermixing reaction, resulting in the irreversible formation of mixed interphases between discrete battery layers. Despite this graded composition, the SSB can operate for over 100 charge-discharge cycles at room temperature and represents the first demonstration of a functional thin-film solid-state sodium-ion battery.

Time-Resolved Chiral X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy with Transiently Enhanced Atomic Site Selectivity: A Free-Electron Laser Investigation of Electronically Excited Fenchone Enantiomers

Chirality is widespread in nature, playing a fundamental role in biochemical processes and in the origin of life itself. The observation of dynamics in chiral molecules is crucial for the understanding and control of the chiral activity of photoexcited states. One of the most promising techniques for the study of photoexcited chiral systems is time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TR-PECD), which offers an intense and sensitive probe for vibronic and geometric molecular structure as well as electronic structures, and their evolution on a femtosecond timescale. However, the nonlocal character of the PECD effect, which is imprinted during the electron scattering off the molecule, makes the interpretation of TR-PECD experiments challenging. In this respect, core photoionization is known to allow site and chemical sensitivity to photelectron spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate that TR-PECD utilizing core-level photoemission enables probing the chiral electronic structure and its relaxation dynamics with atomic site sensitivity. Following UV pumped excitation to a 3s Rydberg state, fenchone enantiomers (C10H16O) were probed on a femtosecond scale using circularly polarized soft x-ray light pulses provided by the free-electron laser FERMI. C 1s binding energy shifts caused by the redistribution of valence electron density in this 3s-valence-Rydberg excitation allowed us to measure transient PECD chiral responses with an enhanced C atom site selectivity compared to that achievable in the ground state molecule. The SXP instrument at the European XFEL

The successful implementation of the baseline instruments at the European XFEL has triggered a second phase of instrument developments aiming to extend the portfolio of available techniques. At the soft X-ray undulator (SASE 3), the Soft X-ray Port (SXP) instrument is currently under construction. Conceived as an open port, it focuses primarily on femtosecond time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-XPES), which has proven to be a powerful tool to understand the properties of materials and the interaction between their internal degrees of freedom. The extension of this technique to the soft X-ray energy range is only possible at MHz free electron lasers (FELs) due to space-charge effects which limit the maximum photon flux per pulse on the sample. In this contribution, the SXP instrument at the European XFEL and the implementation of TR-XPES using a momentum microscope are presented. The photon energy range available at SASE 3, 0.25 keV to 3.5 keV, and the variable polarization will allow for the simultaneous characterization of the electronic, magnetic, chemical and structural properties of materials with femtosecond time resolution. To this end, a wide range of laser excitation wavelengths, ranging from the XUV to the THz region, will be available.

The Laser Infrastructure at the SXP instrument of the European XFEL

This contribution presents the laser infrastructure concept of the Soft X-ray Port (SXP) instrument at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) for day one operation. This scientific platform is conceived as an open port complementing the scientific scope of the other two, already operating baseline instruments at the SASE 3 soft x-ray undulator focusing on atomic, molecular and non-linear optical (SQS) as well as condensed matter physics (SCS). The main driving force behind SXP originates from the time-resolved X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy community contemplating key questions in the dynamics of materials science at interfaces. Nonetheless, proposals to investigate high-valent metal intermediates in biological and inorganic catalysts for chemical bond activation by means of fluorescence spectroscopy as well as research on highly charged ions in the light of astrophysics are also pursued. The outstanding capabilities of the European XFEL pave the way for ultrafast pump-probe investigations at the SXP instrument combining intense and tunable soft X-rays with versatile optical laser capabilities, which are provided by two synchronized femtosecond laser systems, whose wavelength ranges can be extended into the infrared as well as extreme ultraviolet region.

Surface explosion and subsequent core expansion of laser-heated clusters probed by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

The dynamics of nanoplasma produced by an intense near-infrared pulse was investigated by time-resolved soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The pump-probe electron spectra indicate transient evolution of the electronic states of the constituent atoms and ions during plasma formation and disintegration. The delay dependence of photoelectron yields supports two-step fragmentation of laser-heated clusters, i.e., rapid explosion of surface ions followed by slow expansion of neutral atoms. The speed of the neutral core expansion was evaluated by comparing the experimental data with a model of uniform neutral core expansion.

(Invited) Discovering Bottlenecks and Opportunities in Hybrid Solar Light Harvesting Systems By Ultrafast X-Ray Spectroscopy

A prerequisite for advancing hybrid solar light harvesting systems is a comprehensive understanding of photoinduced electronic dynamics across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Time-resolved spectroscopy techniques in the optical domain have proven instrumental in identifying critical timescales of fundamental processes, such as interfacial charge transfer, charge migration, and carrier lifetimes, which are intimately linked to a system's performance. New light source and instrument developments open opportunities to extend such studies into the X-ray regime. Due to their inherent elemental specificity and sensitivity to local electronic environments, time-domain X-ray spectroscopy techniques are uniquely suited to gain a microscopic picture of dynamics from well-defined reporter sites within often complex nanoscale light harvesting architectures. We will present new insights into fundamental photoinduced dynamics in several archetypical heterostructures based on femtosecond and picosecond time-resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (TRXPS).The photoinduced transient charge redistribution in the model hybrid system of nanoporous zinc oxide (ZnO) sensitized by ruthenium bipyridyl chromophores is probed independently from the viewpoints of the molecular electron donor and the semiconductor acceptor.[1] Charge injection from the chromophore into the semiconductor is found to proceed via a transiently populated interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex on an overall timescale of ~300 ps. Our results show that, even after release from the ICT states into the ZnO conduction band, the injected electrons remain localized within less than 6 nm from the interface, due to enhanced downward band-bending by the photo-injected charge carriers. This spatial confinement suggests that light-induced charge generation and transport in nanoscale ZnO photocatalytic devices proceeds predominantly within the defect-rich surface region, which may lead to enhanced surface recombination and explain their lower performance compared to titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based systems. The quantitative nature and surface sensitivity of TRXPS also provides direct access to the spatial separation of the holes remaining on the bipyridyl chromophores after charge injection from the semiconductor surface with sub-nm precision.Complementary femtosecond and picosecond TRXPS studies of photoinduced dynamics in copper-phthalocyanine(CuPc)-C60 heterojunctions provide a deeper understanding of both exciton migration pathways toward the interface as well as the absolute efficiency by which ICT states dissociate into separate charges.[2] The measurements reveal surprisingly efficient charge generation from triplet excitons and from the lowest lying ICT states, both of which were previously believed to be inactive during light-to-charge conversion.Photoinduced charge transfer dynamics between spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and a nanoporous film of TiO2 is monitored by picosecond TRXPS, providing direct access to the absolute photon-to-charge conversion efficiency and subsequent electron-hole recombination dynamics.[3] Preliminary results will be presented for the extension of the measurements into the ambient pressure regime, taking a first step toward the study of photoinduced interfacial chemistry by TRXPS in this model system for nanoplasmonic light harvesting applications.[1] S. Data analysis procedures for time-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at a SASE free-electron-laser

The random nature of self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) is a well-known challenge for x-ray core level spectroscopy at SASE free-electron lasers (FELs). Especially in time-resolved experiments that require a combination of good temporal and spectral resolution the jitter and drifts in the spectral characteristics, relative arrival time as well as power fluctuations can smear out spectral-temporal features. We present a combination of methods for the analysis of time-resolved photoelectron spectra based on power and time corrections as well as self-referencing of a strong photoelectron line. Based on sulfur 2p photoelectron spectra of 2-thiouracil taken at the SASE FEL FLASH2, we show that it is possible to correct for some of the photon energy drift and jitter even when reliable shot-to-shot photon energy data is not available. The quality of pump–probe difference spectra improves as random jumps in energy between delay points reduce significantly. The data analysis allows to identify coherent oscillations of 1 eV shift on the mean photoelectron line of 4 eV width with an error of less than 0.1 eV.

Time-resolved x-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy investigation of the reactive molecular beam epitaxy of Fe3O4 ultrathin films

We present time-resolved high energy x-ray diffraction (tr-HEXRD), time-resolved hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (tr-HAXPES) and time-resolved grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering (tr-GISAXS) data of the reactive molecular beam epitaxy (RMBE) of $\mathrm{Fe_3O_4}$ ultrathin films on various substrates. Reciprocal space maps are recorded during the deposition of $\mathrm{Fe_3O_4}$ on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3(001)}$, MgO(001) and NiO/MgO(001) in order to observe the temporal evolution of Bragg reflections sensitive to the octahedral and tetrahedral sublattices of the inverse spinel structure of $\mathrm{Fe_3O_4}$. A time delay between the appearance of rock salt and spinel-exclusive reflections reveals that first, the iron oxide film grows with $\mathrm{Fe_{1-\delta}O}$ rock salt structure with exclusive occupation of octahedral lattice sites. When this film is 1.1$\,$nm thick, the further growth of the iron oxide film proceeds in the inverse spinel structure, with both octahedral and tetrahedral lattice sites being occupied. In addition, iron oxide on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3(001)}$ initially grows with none of these structures. Here, the formation of the rock salt structure starts when the film is 1.5$\,$nm thick. This is confirmed by tr-HAXPES data obtained during growth of iron oxide on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3(001)}$, which demonstrate an excess of $\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}$ cations in growing films thinner than 3.2$\,$nm. This rock salt phase only appears during growth and vanishes after the supply of the Fe molecular beam is stopped. Thus, it can be concluded the rock salt structure of the interlayer is a property of the dynamic growth process. The tr-GISAXS data link these structural results to an island growth mode of the first 2-3$\,$nm on both MgO(001) and $\mathrm{SrTiO_3(001)}$ substrates.

Following excited-state chemical shifts in molecular ultrafast x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

The conversion of photon energy into other energetic forms in molecules is accompanied by charge moving on ultrafast timescales. We directly observe the charge motion at a specific site in an electronically excited molecule using time-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-XPS). We extend the concept of static chemical shift from conventional XPS by the excited-state chemical shift (ESCS), which is connected to the charge in the framework of a potential model. This allows us to invert TR-XPS spectra to the dynamic charge at a specific atom. We demonstrate the power of TR-XPS by using sulphur 2p-core-electron-emission probing to study the UV-excited dynamics of 2-thiouracil. The method allows us to discover that a major part of the population relaxes to the molecular ground state within 220–250 fs. In addition, a 250-fs oscillation, visible in the kinetic energy of the TR-XPS, reveals a coherent exchange of population among electronic states.

Two-dimensional correlation analysis for x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measures the binding energy of core-level electrons, which are well-localised to specific atomic sites in a molecular system, providing valuable information on the local chemical environment. The technique relies on measuring the photoelectron spectrum upon x-ray photoionisation, and the resolution is often limited by the bandwidth of the ionising x-ray pulse. This is particularly problematic for time-resolved XPS, where the desired time resolution enforces a fundamental lower limit on the bandwidth of the x-ray source. In this work, we report a novel correlation analysis which exploits the correlation between the x-ray and photoelectron spectra to improve the resolution of XPS measurements. We show that with this correlation-based spectral-domain ghost imaging method we can achieve sub-bandwidth resolution in XPS measurements. This analysis method enables XPS for sources with large bandwidth or spectral jitter, previously considered unfeasible for XPS measurements.

Light-Induced Charge Accumulation in PTCDI/Pentacene/Ag(111) Heterojunctions

The incorporation of singlet fission (SF) chromophores in solar cells is expected to bring significant increases in the power conversion efficiency thanks to multiexciton generation. However, efficient charge generation in the device is determined by the energy level alignment (ELA) between the active materials, which should favor exciton transport and separation under illumination. By combining ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and optical differential reflectance measurements, we determine the ELA in a prototypical SF heterojunction between pentacene (Pc) and perylene-tetracarboxylic-diimide (PTCDI) grown on Ag(111). Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on such a system reveals light-induced modifications of the ELA; by measuring the transient shift of the core level photoemission lines we observe an accumulation of long-lived holes in the PTCDI within the first hundred picoseconds after the optical pump.

Real-time interfacial electron dynamics revealed through temporal correlations in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

We present a novel technique to monitor dynamics in interfacial systems through temporal correlations in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) signals. To date, the vast majority of time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy techniques rely on pump–probe schemes, in which the sample is excited out of equilibrium by a pump pulse, and the subsequent dynamics are monitored by probe pulses arriving at a series of well-defined delays relative to the excitation. By definition, this approach is restricted to processes that can either directly or indirectly be initiated by light. It cannot access spontaneous dynamics or the microscopic fluctuations of ensembles in chemical or thermal equilibrium. Enabling this capability requires measurements to be performed in real (laboratory) time with high temporal resolution and, ultimately, without the need for a well-defined trigger event. The time-correlation XPS technique presented here is a first step toward this goal. The correlation-based technique is implemented by extending an existing optical-laser pump/multiple x-ray probe setup by the capability to record the kinetic energy and absolute time of arrival of every detected photoelectron. The method is benchmarked by monitoring energy-dependent, periodic signal modulations in a prototypical time-resolved XPS experiment on photoinduced surface-photovoltage dynamics in silicon, using both conventional pump–probe data acquisition, and the new technique based on laboratory time. The two measurements lead to the same result. The findings provide a critical milestone toward the overarching goal of studying equilibrium dynamics at surfaces and interfaces through time correlation-based XPS measurements.

Synchronizing gas injections and time-resolved data acquisition for perturbation-enhanced APXPS experiments.

An experimental approach is described in which well-defined perturbations of the gas feed into an Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (APXPS) cell are fully synchronized with the time-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data acquisition. These experiments unlock new possibilities for investigating the properties of materials and chemical reactions mediated by their surfaces, such as those in heterogeneous catalysis, surface science, and coating/deposition applications. Implementation of this approach, which is termed perturbation-enhanced APXPS, at the SPECIES beamline of MAX IV Laboratory is discussed along with several experimental examples including individual pulses of N2 gas over a Au foil, a multi-pulse titration of oxygen vacancies in a pre-reduced TiO2 single crystal with O2 gas, and a sequence of alternating precursor pulses for atomic layer deposition of TiO2 on a silicon wafer substrate.
