Exploring the role of technology infrastructure capability and intrapreneurship to influence higher education institutions’ performance

The dawn of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has shifted the landscape of private higher education industry in Malaysia. It becomes more liberalized and competitive, raising the issue of sustainability among the private higher education institutions (PHEIs). Working within the theory of resource-based view (RBV), PHEIs need to develop their technology infrastructure capability and intrapreneurial skills among their academicians to enhance performance. The purpose of this paper is to develop a better understanding on the claim that technology influences organizational performance, and to investigate the mediating role of intrapreneurship in higher education industry. Data are collected from 261 respondents from 19 PHEIs in Malaysia and analyzed using SmartPLS 3.0. The result reveals that technology infrastructure capability have significant impact on PHEIs’ performance, and that intrapreneurship mediates the relationship between both variables. This paper also provides valuable insights for PHEIs to focus on enhancing technological infrastructure capability and developing intrapreneurial skills among their academicians. Furthermore, this paper adds value to by addressing multiple predictors in contributing to PHEIs’ performance.

Building supply chain risk resilience

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine how firms can develop business risk resilience from supply chain disruption events, by developing big data analytics (BDA) capabilities within their organization. The authors test whether BDA mediates the impact of institutional response to supply chain disruption events, and information technology infrastructure capabilities (ITICs), on firm’s ability to develop risk resilience from supply chain disruption events.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on survey data collected from 225 firms, spread across several sectors in the USA and Europe. The respondents are primarily senior and middle management professionals who have experience within the information technology (IT) and supply chain domain. Validity and reliability analyses were performed using SPSS and AMOS; and covariance-based structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesis.FindingsThe analysis reveals two significant findings. First, the authors observe that institutional experience with managing supply chain disruption events has a negative impact on firm’s ability to develop business risk resilience. However, if the organizations adopt BDA capabilities, it enables them to effectively utilize resident firm knowledge and develop supply chain risk resilience capacity. The results further suggest that BDA positively adds to an organization’s existing IT capabilities. The analysis shows that BDA mediates the impact of ITIC on the organization’s ability to develop risk resilience to supply chain disruption events.Originality/valueThis study is one of the few works that empirically validate the important role that BDA capabilities play in enabling firms develop business risk resilience from supply chain disruption events. The study further provides a counterpoint to the existing perspective within the supply chain risk management literature that institutional experience of managing past supply chain disruption events prepares the organization to deal with future disruption events. This paper adds to our understanding of how, by adopting BDA capabilities, firms can develop supply chain risk resilience from disruption events.

The Influence of Technological Innovation on Small Manufacturing Firm Performance in Malaysia

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine various technological innovation influencers (TIIs) in small manufacturing firms. It introduces a study framework of technological innovation and evaluates the relevance of four TIIs to building and sustaining the competitiveness of Malaysia firms. Design/methodology/approach – This research is based on an in-depth survey of 135 firms located in Malaysia region. Multiple regression analysis was employed to examine the correlation between TIIs and manufacturing firm performance (MFP) for these firms. Findings – The findings verify that entrepreneurial capability, technology infrastructure capability and government initiatives are the most important TIIs for small firms. The findings are also validated by using statistical t-test and canonical correlation analysis. Research limitations/implications – This study uses a single informant as the source of information on each firm. The study is limited to small-scale firms in the Malaysia. Also, the study has been conducted excluding the service sector. Originality/value – Recent studies have advocated various TIIs and discussed their impact on MFP. This paper examines the determinants of technological innovation in small manufacturing firms. It introduces a study framework of technological innovation and examines the relevance of four TIIs to building and sustaining the competitiveness of Malaysia firms.

PENGARUH SUPPLY CHAIN FLEXIBILITY DAN TEKNOLOGI INFORMASI TERHADAP DAYA SAING PERUSAHAAN UKM KERIPIK TEMPE SANAN MALANG

Competitiveness as a key to obtain a competitive advantage and is the company's ability in: flexibility, innovation, quality and cost reduction. While supply chain flexibility can be used to analyze the overall system capacity to accommodate volume and schedule fluctuations from suppliers, manufactures and customers, this flexibility is essential to the success of the supply chain. To connect the entire supply chain functions, there are five dimensions of supply chain flexibility: supply flexibility, product flexibility, production flexibility, delivery flexibility and responsiveness flexibility. In this globalization era, when the company's competitive advantage can be achieved, the ability to support Information Technology (IT) for supply management flexibility plays an important part, as measured by indicators of information technology infrastructure capabilities and the ability to use information technology. This study findings that the application of IT has an influence on the competitiveness of SMEs Tempe Chip's Sanan, this is explained because it is still infrequent use of IT by SMEs to financial management activities and reports, as well as the development of innovation that affect the competitiveness of SMEs there tempeh crackers in orders. The research also found that the application of Supply Chain Flexibility (SCF) has no effect on the competitiveness of SMEs Tempe Chip's Sanan, which are described as the average chip makers Tempe orders in normal conditions are relatively stable level of demand, so in this case the flexibility of the supply chain not required. Meanwhile, in terms of product innovation, the average tempe chip's craftsmen produce the same good price, quality, or taste. Only the craftsmen who continue to innovate which can produce new products, but this condition does not last long because other craftsmen in the long run can imitate new products.

The Multiple Dimensions of Information Technology Infrastructure Capability toward Cooperative Interfirm Relationship: An Empirical Study

This study seeks to assess the impact of IT infrastructure capability on cooperative interfirm relationship. Grounded in IT infrastructure framework and transaction cost and information processing theories, we identify multiple dimensions of IT infrastructure capabilityIT resources, information resources, and process resources and propose a model and formulate hypotheses, which articulate relationships between the dimensions and electronic cooperation. We then test the hypotheses empirically using the data from a survey of IS managers in manufacturing and retailing industries. The results support the multi-dimensional view of IT infrastructure capability in interfirm relationship.

An empirical study of information technology infrastructure capability and its impact on digitally enabled customer management processes in life insurance companies

Academic marketing literatures have increasingly studied about customer management processes. However, there is limited investigation to understand the integration of information technology infrastructure to leverage customer management processes for performance gains. This paper provides an approach to address the impact of each of the individual information technology capabilities on customer management processes. It also provides an empirical analysis of the impact on intermediate business process outcome. The research model proposed is unique in its nature and attempted for the first time, where the academicians and the practitioners can gain insight into the impact of each individual information technology infrastructure capabilities on digitally enabled customer management business processes. This paper uses objective measurement for the process outcome relevant to the industry and customer management business processes. This approach is generic enough to apply for analysing impact of information technology capabilities on business processes specific to an industry.

Job Satisfaction Framework: The Role of Market Orientation, Service Orientation and IT Infrastructure

The study proposes to investigate whether Market Orientation (MO), Service Orientation (SO) and Information Technology Infrastructure Capability (ITIC) affect the Job Satisfaction (JS) as well as to identify factors and barriers that influence the implementation of MO, SO and ITI capability to improve JS in banking industry. About 20 participants from 4 departments from Mellat Bank of Iran have been involved in the qualitative research process which was blended with the case study design. Significant patterns and themes are identified and presented in this study. A conceptual research framework based on the qualitative analysis on how MO, SO and ITI capability improve JS is proposed. The model comprises of five major components: market orientation, service orientation, job satisfaction, IT infrastructure capability and factors and barriers that influence the implementation of MO, SO and ITI capability to improve JS. Extensive empirical analyses in the real world environment in other industries would be helpful to verify and generalize this approach. This study provides guidelines for bank industry to implement effective market orientation and service orientation initiatives and information technology infrastructure to improve job satisfaction.

Information Technology Infrastructure Capability's Impact on Firm Financial Performance: An exploratory Study

This paper explores the relationship between information technology infrastructure capabilities and firm performance. Return on sales is utilized as the measure of firm performance, due to its ability to indicate a firm's competitive advantage and resource/competitive flexibility. Utilizing existing measures an instrument was used which addressed the multiple dimensions of IT infrastructure. Eight factors were found to significantly effect return on sales. Modularity, technical specialty knowledge, support activity efficiency, and resource acquisition functionality positively effected firm performance. While primary activity efficiency, resource management functionality, threat and premptiveness positively effected firm performance. Empirical evidence is provided and theoretical explanations are explored. Finally, limitations of the study as well as future research are discussed.
