Teachers' Perceptions in Implementing Technologies In Language Teaching and Learning in Indonesia

Technologies have swept the world in every aspect of life including the education system. And therefore, the purpose of this research is to find the Challenges Encountered in implementing technologies in Language Teaching and Learning in Indonesia. This study was a quantitative method in nature. The participants of the study were randomly chosen 30 teachers from Bandung in the rural area. The data were collected by using questionnaires and were analyzed by using mix method that is quantitative and qualitative procedures. The result showed that using technology in the classroom was helpful. In addition to that, more tools and facilities provided by schools are increasingly helping them improve their ability to use technology. Though the school has prepared facilities there were several challenges found in the implementation of technologies in the Language Learning classrooms. Additional results of this study give meaningful insights for policymakers in relation to the implementation of ICT for teaching and learning in the classroom.

Virtual reality in language learning: a systematic review and implications for research and practice

ABSTRACT The increasing popularity of Virtual Reality (VR) has provoked scholars’ and educators’ interest to explore its potential as a learning environment for various fields of education. Along this line, several literature reviews have analysed and synthesised the educational use of VR; however, scholar activity is lacking a recent review of VR on a specific field of interest such as language learning. Thus this paper delineates the contour of scholarly literature on VR as an emerging technology in language teaching and learning. Using 17 high-impact journals and conferences in the fields of Computer-Assisted Language Learning and Educational Technology as a source, 26 scholarly manuscripts were retrieved from 2015 to 2018, analysed and synthesised under the following foci: (a) technologies used, language learning settings and duration of educational activities; (b) benefits and limitations from using VR as an educational tool in the language classroom; (c) future research directions regarding the educational use of VR based on the reviewed literature. This paper argues that VR is an invaluable tool in the language classrooms but entails challenges regarding its technical configuration, as well as its pedagogical grounding. The study concludes with some discussion and implications for researchers and practitioners.

When future teachers meet real learners through telecollaboration: an experiential approach to learn how to teach languages online

The integration of technology in language teaching has been one important topic in language education and teacher training. Teacher education has been one of the aims of telecollaboration since the beginning of the 2000’s. While the first pioneers worked with small groups of students (Develotte, Mangenot, & Zourou, 2005; MüllerHartmann, 2006), more recent projects are widening the application of telecollaboration for teacher education (Baroni et al., 2019). In the present article we present an adaptation of the model of Le Français en (Première) Ligne (hereafter F1L) proposed by Develotte et al. (2005) in two telecollaborative projects aiming at developing trainees’ techno-semiopedagogical competences.

O processo de internacionalização e o ensino e aprendizagem de língua inglesa no contexto de uma universidade estadual

A partir de conceitos de internacionalização e proficiência em língua estrangeira, objetivamos, neste artigo, mapear dados sobre os níveis de proficiência obtidos por aprendizes advindos de projetos de ensino de língua inglesa, com financiamento e parcerias externas, que vêm sendo desenvolvidos em uma universidade pública paulista. No âmbito desses projetos, são oferecidos cursos e testes de nivelamento on-line para alunos de graduação, pós-graduação e servidores. Os cursos ocorrem na modalidade on-line, utilizando a ferramenta de webconferência Zoom. Os professores atuantes em tais cursos são alunos de graduação e pós-graduação em Letras, orientados por especialistas em formação de professores, tecnologias no ensino de línguas e avaliação.

Práticas translíngues na educação linguística de surdos mediada por tecnologias digitais

Neste artigo apresentamos e examinamos situações de ensino de alunos surdos participantes de um curso de português como segunda língua. Os registros foram gerados a partir de uma pesquisa qualitativa-interpretativista decunho etnográfico. Analisando o desenvolvimento de uma unidade de ensino a partir de uma lente translíngue, apontamos para o papel das tecnologias digitais como suporte para práticas translíngues entre alunos e professores como agentes que produzem sentidos com diferentes recursos para atingir aos objetivos das interações e tarefas propostas. A interlocução teórica entre estudos sobre ensino de línguas mediado por tecnologias com a noção de translinguagem aplicada aos contextos de educação bi/multilíngue iluminou aspectos das situações analisadas relevantes para uma discussão sobre outros modos de pensar a educação de surdos, tais como a ampliação dos repertórios comunicativos e o desenvolvimento de competências de compreensão e expressão translíngues e transmodais como gatilho para o desenvolvimento de uma educação linguística ampliada por parte dos alunos.

A STUDY ON INDONESIAN TEACHERS’ USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Since 1960, technology has been used as one of educational tools to help teachers in teaching learning process. In the context of foreign language teaching, technology is utilized for various reasons and purposes. A questionnaire was distributed to 150 English as foreign Language (EFL) teachers in West Java to investigate the use of technology in their EFL classroom. Specifically, this paper reports the type of technology which teachers usually use in teaching English and also elaborate the reasons why teachers apply technology in their classrooms. Finally, this paper explores teachers’ attitudes on the use of technology in language teaching.

MODERN METHODS OF LANGUAGE LEARNING

Language learning is one of the most important areas in human society is calculated. Language as a means of communication in the natural environment (family, among the public) or in an organized (in the classroom) practical acquisition . Knowledge of linguistic phenomena is studied theoretically. As you know, learning a foreign language has certain aspects differs sharply from the mother tongue and the second language. This, in turn, requires the use of appropriate foreign language teaching technology. The article is an education with such differences methods of teaching foreign languages in institutions, organization, conduct of foreign language lessons, etc. has covered many methodological issues. This article is based on textbooks and manuals published in foreign and domestic publishing houses, as well as methodological sources covering the experience of Uzbek schools to be used by a wide readership.

El papel efectivo de la técnica CALL en la enseñanza del inglés a nivel de posgrado: un estudio de caso de la Universidad del Punjab, Pakistán

El presente estudio tiene como objetivo observar el papel de CALL en la enseñanza del inglés. Mediante la integración de esta tecnología avanzada en la enseñanza de idiomas en forma de texto, sonidos, gráficos visuales, animaciones y medios, los maestros obtienen resultados más fructíferos y amplios bajo el mismo techo de sus alumnos. El método de encuesta fue utilizado para la recopilación de datos para investigar la efectividad de CALL en la enseñanza de inglés a nivel de posgrado en la Universidad de Punjab. Concluye con recomendaciones sobre la enseñanza del idioma inglés a través de la técnica CALL También permite a los estudiantes aprender un conocimiento apropiado del idioma inglés.

Language Teachers and Their Trajectories Across Technology-Enhanced Language Teaching: Needs and Beliefs of ESL/EFL Teachers

In this article, we present the initial results of the first phase of our international Research Network, which sets out to revisit the current needs of language teachers in terms of training to achieve the integration of technology within their educational contexts. We focus on the type of needs and their order of priority from the viewpoint of English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) teachers and suggest some recommendations for training programs. These data, collected via an online questionnaire distributed in several countries, were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively in relation to participants’ perceptions of needs regarding language education technology, as well as participants’ perceptions of the “ideal” teacher, and their relation to the use of technology. Results indicate that despite overall satisfaction regarding training received, many teachers mention their need for a posttraining follow-up. They also express interest in developing “learning task design” skills and in exploring course management platforms such as Moodle. Furthermore, while most participants fully or partially agree with the relationship between technology and excellence in language teaching, their definition of the “ideal” language teacher rarely includes the use of technology. A shift in “ideal” teacher beliefs seems, therefore, necessary for better adoption and use of technology in language education. 
 Dans cet article, nous présentons les premiers résultats de la phase initiale d’une étude effectuée par notre Réseau international de recherche, qui vise à réexaminer les besoins actuels des professeurs de langues en termes de formation sur l'intégration de la technologie dans leur propre contexte éducatif. Nous mettons l’accent sur les types de besoins et leur ordre de priorité du point de vue des professeurs d’anglais langue seconde/langue étrangère (ESL/EFL) en proposant plusieurs recommandations pour les programmes de formation. Les données ont été collectées par le biais d’un questionnaire en ligne distribué dans plusieurs pays, et ont fait l'objet d'une analyse quantitative et qualitativement par rapport aux perceptions des participants sur les besoins en matière de technologie de l'enseignement des langues. Le questionnaire interroge aussi les participants sur leur perception de l'enseignant « idéal », et leur relation avec l'utilisation de la technologie. Les résultats indiquent que malgré la satisfaction générale concernant la formation reçue, de nombreux enseignants mentionnent leur besoin d'avoir un suivi. Ils expriment également leur intérêt à développer des compétences en conception de tâches d’apprentissage et à explorer des plates-formes de gestion des cours comme Moodle. En outre, bien que la plupart des participants reconnaissent un lien positif entre la technologie et l'excellence dans l'enseignement des langues, leur définition du professeur de langues « idéal » inclut rarement l'utilisation de la technologie. Il semble donc nécessaire que les croyances relatives à la définition du professeur de langue « idéal » évoluent afin de favoriser l’adoption et l’usage de la technologie dans l’enseignement de langues.

ADVANCED TEACHING AND LEARNING METHOD FOR ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS AIMING AT THE STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDUSTRY 4.0

In recent years, job candidates are currently required not only professional knowledge and skills but also English specifically implemented in particular occupations. Since then English for specific purposes (ESP) is the latest trend which has exponentially developed. The majority of universities have deployed diverse ESP courses in order to help learners address communicative needs as well as practices of particular professions. Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport has also provided interesting ESP courses supposed to assist engineering and technology students in their future careers. Not only inspired by the need to enable the learners of these courses to increase their knowledge of terminology in their fields but also integrating technology in language teaching and learning, this paper aims to suggest Quizlet a mobile and web-based study application as a tool to facilitate specialized vocabulary acquisition for learners of English for engineering and technology as well as for those who are learners of English for specific purposes in general. Thanks to Quizlet, both teachers and students will take full advantages from this innovative method that is probably proliferating their new learning and teaching experiences. Although the merits outweigh in this sphere, it is obvious that Quizlet should not be compulsory, but combined with other strategies to eventually give fruitful assistance to meet learners’ increasing demands on the verge of the industrial revolution 4.0.

Future of technology in language teaching and learning

Ever since the technology found its way into language education during the 1980s and 1990s, discussions surrounding language teaching and learning with technology have manifested into an interdisciplinary field, bringing together the diverse groups of scholars to consider how best to support language learning with technology. In conjunction with the ongoing advancement of technology, the field has now expanded its avenue and established multiple sub-disciplines and special interest groups, such as Intelligent CALL, virtual-reality (VR) and language learning, digital game-based language learning, virtual world and language learning, computer-mediated communication (CMC), distance and blended learning, massive open online courses (MOOCs), and mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), with even more unique and innovative subfields such as robot-assisted language learning and speech bots emerging. To respond to the increasing interest, it has become apparent that creating open platforms for scholars and practitioners to share their research outputs and pedagogical reflections is critical in contributing to the long-term growth of the field.

Using Technology in ESL Classroom: Highlights and Challenges

Technology is evolving rapidly in the past two decades. Many are familiar with technology and gradually becoming digital natives. In this technological era, the application of technology has eased our ways in various fields of work particularly in the education field. Technology has also proven its effectiveness in language teaching which includes as a source of motivation and provides room for authentic learning. However, there are still disadvantages in using technology to teach. Students may get easily distracted and might misuse the technology. Other than that, frequent use of technology can limit students thinking potential. Hence, this paper reviews the highlights and challenges of using technology in language teaching. This paper could be a source of reference by teachers who are planning to integrate technology in ESL classroom. Future research can look into how technology affects students’ attitude.

Profiling Web Technology Adoption of English Language Instructors in Malaysian Universities

Undeniably the use of web technology in language teaching and learning has advanced by leaps and bounds. It not only provides effective learning experiences to the present digitally-inclined students but also assists teachers in creating interesting content and activities as well as in monitoring and evaluating students. Teachers at all educational levels employ web technology in their teaching. However, it has been reported that its potential has not been fully reaped. This paper presents findings from a study investigating the nature and extent of web technologies used by Malaysian tertiary English language instructors. The aim was to examine the nature and extent of using such tools in language teaching. Profiling the web technology adoption by these instructors would provide insights on the degree of use and the range of web potentialities that has been explored; providing vital information to all key players regarding support and training needs, among others. The findings of the study revealed that the English instructors employed a myriad of web tools. They demonstrated a high level of use of these tools for teaching but only a medium level for communication and evaluation.

INNOVATIVE METHODS AND IT TECHNOLOGIES IN THE TEACHING OF MODERN LANGUAGES AT THE ECONOMIC UNIVERSITY (ON THE EXAMPLE OF TEACHING UKRAINIAN AND POLISH LANGUAGES AS FOREIGN)

The article presents the specific character of teaching foreign languages – "Ukrainian as a foreign language" and "Polish as a foreign language" – for students-economists at Kiev National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman. The basic assumptions of these disciplines are the principle of regularity, the orientation on achieving linguistic communication, and familiarizing students with vocational vocabulary. Disciplines are aimed at teaching practical knowledge of Ukrainian and Polish as foreign languages, shaping cultural (real-life) competences and familiarizing with the normative principles of functioning of these languages in various communication situations.
 Particular attention is also paid to the use of innovative methods and IT technologies in language education of a modern economic university (case study method, project method, metaplan method in teaching Polish and Ukrainian languages as foreign).

Enhancing beginner learners’ oral proficiency in a flipped Chinese foreign language classroom

ABSTRACTFlipped instruction has become a hot issue in foreign language teaching technology. In this study, we tracked learners in a beginner-level Chinese Foreign Language classroom to see if flipped teaching based on a MOOC made a difference to their oral proficiency development and rate of progresscompared to a baseline group. Language developmentwas assessed by standard complexity, accuracy and fluency measures, alongside subjective ratings. Learners’ investment of time and perceptions of the new method were also investigated. Results showed that learners exposed to flipped instruction significantly (p < .01) outperformed the baseline group in oral proficiency in many measures, especially in speech fluency, though their advantage in complexity and accuracy was less evident. Rate of progress through the syllabus for the flipped group was also faster, requiring 25% less face-to-face time. Learners in the flipped group also demonstrated more (out of class) time investment in their learning and more positive attitudes toward the course, though these two factors did not significantly associate with the proficiency measures. These results support the implementation of flipped instruction in foreign language classrooms for both better and faster learner improvement; we explore how far psycho-social models of active learning might explain its methodological advantages.

Teachers’ Beliefs on Technological Fusion in Teaching ESL Students

Studies on the effectiveness of technology have shown that it enhances students in language learning and helps gain their involvement. Nevertheless, there is still resistance among teachers in using technology in the language classrooms due to the rapid advancements of technology. The aim of the study reported in this article was therefore to gather testimonial insights on teachers’ beliefs about technology and its fusion to illuminate how English as a second language (ESL) teaching and learning is eased and made meaningful in classrooms. This paper reports on a case study that looks into primary school teachers’ beliefs on technological fusion in teaching ESL students. Data were collected from three teachers of different teaching experiences through interviews and observations and themes were generated through constant comparative and thematic analysis; assisted with the use of ATLAS ti.7 software. Findings indicate that despite positive beliefs that the fusion of technology assists language teaching and learning, not all teachers embrace technology in their classrooms as schools especially in rural areas lack facilities to aid the use of technology. This study implies that there is a need to equip all schools with devices and equipment that aid the fusion of technology in language teaching.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN MOBILE PHONE USAGE FOR LANGUAGE LEARNING, ATTITUDE, AND PERFORMANCE

Mobile phone technology that has a huge impact on students’ lives in the digital age may offer a new type of learning. The use of effective tool to support learning can be affected by the factor of gender. The current research compared how male and female students perceived mobile phones as a language learning tool, used mobile phones to learn English and developed their learning performance. A five-point rating scale questionnaire was used to collect data from 122 students, comprising 65 females and 57 males. They were enrolled in a fundamental English course where mobile phone usage was integrated in certain language learning tasks with an aim to facilitate learning. The findings demonstrated that male and female students did not differ in their usage, attitudes toward mobile phone uses for language learning as well as their learning performance at a significance level. In addition, the constraints of using mobile phone for learning that students identified in an open-ended question included the small screen and keyboard the most, followed by intrusiveness of SMS background knowledge, and limited memory of mobile phone. The implication for classroom practice was proposed in how mobile phone can be fully incorporated into the instructional process in order to enhance learner engagement. The results of this study are important for teachers when implementing the mobile phone technology in language teaching. They can be used as a guideline of how mobile phone can be fully incorporated into the instructional process in order to enhance learner engagement.

O uso da tecnologia/metodologia WebQuest em práticas pedagógicas no contexto de uma Licenciatura em Letras/Espanhol

Discutimos, neste artigo, o uso da tecnologia WebQuest em práticas vivenciadas na disciplina Metodologia do Ensino e Aprendizagem de Línguas, de um curso de Licenciatura em Letras/Espanhol. O objetivo da proposta era que os estudantes pudessem ampliar seus conhecimentos sobre metodologias (com foco no espanhol), melhorar seu nível de letramento digital e refletir sobre a apropriação social das tecnologias digitais no campo do ensino e aprendizagem de línguas. Nas aulas, partimos dos conhecimentos prévios dos alunos e da discussão de obras que tratassem sobre as principais metodologias de ensino e aprendizagem de línguas e de outras que abordassem, em linhas gerais, a questão do letramento digital e, em termos específicos, que versassem sobre a WebQuest. Para tanto, nos apoiamos nos trabalhos de Levy (2010), Xavier (2005) e Dias (2010), dentre outros. Os resultados alcançados foram a criação de WebQuests, o aprofundamento da reflexão sobre a importância do uso pedagógico de tecnologias e a melhora do letramento digital dos estudantes.
