Exploring the Potential and Hurdles of Perovskite Solar Cells with p-i-n Structure.

The p-i-n architecture within perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is swiftly transitioning from an alternative concept to the forefront of perovskite photovoltaic technology, driven by significant advancements in performance and suitability for tandem solar cell integration. The relentless pursuit to increase efficiencies and understand the factors contributing to instability has yielded notable strategies for enhancing p-i-n PSC performance. Chief among these is the advancement in passivation techniques, including the application of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which have proven central to mitigating interface-related inefficiencies. This Perspective delves into a curated selection of recent impactful studies on p-i-n PSCs, focusing on the latest material developments, device architecture refinements, and performance optimization tactics. We particularly emphasize the strides made in passivation and interfacial engineering. Furthermore, we explore the strides and potential of p-i-n structured perovskite tandem solar cells. The Perspective culminates in a discussion of the persistent challenges facing p-i-n PSCs, such as long-term stability, scalability, and the pursuit of environmentally benign solutions, setting the stage for future research directives.

Triple-junction Dion-Jacobson perovskite tandem solar cells: advancing efficiency via interface optimization and broadened light absorption spectrum

Abstract Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites have emerged as game-changers in the world of photovoltaics due to their unique combination of advantages like cost-effective fabrication, tailorable bandgap, and exceptional efficiency. Further, in this study, MXene contacts have been utilized with 2D-perovskites solar cells to leverage the advantages of both, leading to improved stability, superior charge transport, and adjustable energy bandgap without the occurrence of pinhole effects. To further tap into the immense potential of perovskites, this study explores the power of a triple-junction All DJ perovskite tandem solar cell (ADJT-PSC) architecture. This design captures a broader spectrum of sunlight, maximizing energy harvesting and unlocking new possibilities for photovoltaic devices. In this symphony of light and power, 1.5-pentamethylenediamine (PeDA) methylammonium lead iodide (PeDAMAPb2I7) (1.98 eV), PeDAMA5Pb6I19 (1.6 eV), CsLaTa2Se7 (1.1 eV) take as the absorber layers in the top, middle, and bottom subcells, respectively. Moreover, optimizing the thickness of each perovskite layer is crucial for maximizing efficiency. This study conducted a thorough analysis and identified the ideal 350 nm/550 nm/200 nm thicknesses for the top/middle/bottom layers, respectively. Furthermore, the study explored the art of doping variation in the electron and hole transport layers. By meticulously adjusting the doping levels, ADJT-PSC can achieve a maximum efficiency of 35%.

Enhanced efficiency of carbon based all perovskite tandem solar cells via cubic plasmonic metallic nanoparticles with dielectric nano shells

This study investigates a carbon-based all-perovskite tandem solar cell (AP-TSC) with the structure ITO, SnO₂, Cs₀.₂FA₀.₈Pb(I₀.₇Br₀.₃)₃, WS₂, MoO₃, ITO, C₆₀, MAPb₀.₅Sn₀.₅I₃, PEDOT: PSS, Carbon. The bandgap configuration of the cell is 1.75 eV/1.17 eV, which is theoretically limited to 36% efficiency. The effectiveness of embedding cubic plasmonic metallic nanoparticles (NPs) made of Gold (Au) and Silver (Ag) within the absorber layers to eliminate the requirement for thicker absorber layers, decrease manufacturing costs and Pb toxicity is demonstrated in our analysis. This analysis was conducted using 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations for both optical and electrical calculations. Prior to delving into the primary investigation of the tandem structure, a validation simulation was conducted to demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the simulations. Notably, the efficiency mismatch observed during the validation simulation, specifically in relation to the incorporation of metallic nanoparticles (NPs), amounted to a mere 0.01%. To mitigate the potential issues of direct contact between metallic NPs and perovskite materials, such as increased thermal and chemical instability and recombination at the NP surface, a 5 nm dielectric shell was applied to the NPs. The incorporation of cubic core-shell Ag NPs resulted in a 15.32% enhancement in short-circuit current density, from 16.39 mA/cm² to 18.90 mA/cm², and a 15.68% increase in overall efficiency, from 26.9 to 31.12%. This research paves the way for the integration of core-shell metallic NPs in AP-TSCs, highlighting a significant potential for efficiency and stability improvements. In a dedicated section the band alignment of the sub-cell was addressed. Additionally, a thermal investigation of the proposed tandem structure was conducted, demonstrating the robustness of the proposed AP-TSC. Finally, the sensitivity analyses related to input parameters and the challenges associated with large-scale fabrication of the proposed AP-TSC were extensively discussed.

Air-Processed Efficient Cesium-Based Two-Dimensional Perovskite Solar Cells Based on Asymmetric Chiral Ammonium Salts.

Cesium-based two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with attractive phase and environmental stability have broad application prospects in single-junction and tandem perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the severe nonradiative recombination and significant energy losses due to disordered phase orientations and phase distributions greatly hinder the carrier transport performance of cesium-based 2D PSCs and severely limit their photovoltaic performance. Here, we employ an asymmetric chiral spacer cation source, (R)-α-phenylethylamine acrylate (R-α-PEAAA), to prepare high-quality 2D cesium-based films with uniform phase distribution and high out-of-plane orientation by air processing, resulting in efficient carrier transport. More importantly, the asymmetric chiral spacer R-α-PEA has a stronger dipole moment than its isomer (PEA), which can regulate the dielectric properties of cesium-based 2D perovskites and promote charge dissociation. In addition, the chiral R-α-PEA can optimize the morphology and out-of-plane orientation of perovskite films, reduce trap density and nonradiative recombination loss, and optimize energy level alignment, thus enhancing carrier transport. As a result, cesium-based 2D PSCs (R-α-PEA2Cs4Pb5I16, n = 5) achieved a record power conversion efficiency of 19.71% and the unencapsulated device maintained over 90% efficiency after 1500 h of continuous light exposure and ambient storage (35 ± 5% relative humidity). This study provides an idea for the development of chiral 2D perovskite with efficient charge carrier transport toward efficient and stable cesium-based 2D PSCs.

Quantum Interference at the Recombination Junction of Perovskite-Si Tandem Solar Cells Improves Efficiency.

We show quantum interference effects can enhance coherent electron transmission in perovskite tandem solar cells using ultrathin indium tin oxide (ITO) layers. We develop a model for the behavior of the power conversion efficiency based on a finite difference time domain solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The modeled potential includes an imaginary part to simulate probability loss by incoherent scattering. The results agree with observations of efficiency as a function of ITO thickness, suggesting an optimized design.

Recent Advances in Carbazole-Based Self-Assembled Monolayer for Solution-Processed Optoelectronic Devices.

Self-assembled molecules (SAMs) have shown great potential in the application of optoelectronic devices due to their unique molecular properties. Recently, emerging phosphonic acid-based SAMs, 2-(9Hcarbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz), have successfully applied in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), organic solar cells (OSCs) and perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs). More importantly, impressive results based on 2PACz SAMs are reported recently in succession. Therefore, it is essential to provide an insightful summary to promote it further development. In this review, the molecule design strategies about 2PACz are first concluded. Subsequently, this work systematically reviews the recent advances of 2PACz and its derivatives for single junction PSCs, tandem PSCs, OSCs and PeLEDs. Finally, this work concludes and discusses future challenges for 2PACz and its derivatives to further develop in optoelectronic devices.

Silicon / Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells with Reverse Bias Stability down to -40V. Unveiling the Role of Electrical and Optical Design.

The reverse bias stability is a key concern for the commercialization and reliability of halide perovskite photovoltaics. Here, the robustness of perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells to reverse bias electrical degradation down to -40V is investigated. The two-terminal tandem configuration, with the perovskite coupled to silicon, can improve the solar cell resistance to severe negative voltages when the tandem device is properly designed. While perovskite cells typically exhibit early reverse bias breakdown voltages, the serial connection with silicon cells with large shunt resistances and high voltage breakdown limits their negative polarization and prevent the passage of large current densities when reverse biased. The importance of careful optical design is illustrated, with bottom-limited conditions required to prevent the perovskite topcell from exploring its own breakdown. This aspect is of great importance in the case of partial shading events when the solar spectrum is richer in the IR components than the standard AM1.5G. Notably, 100% of efficiency retained after polarization at -40V in different stressing conditions is observed. The results presented suggest that standard industrial bypass diode schemes may be compatible with silicon/perovskite tandem photovoltaics and provide new guidelines for the standardization of the stressing protocols.

Role of NiO in wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells based on self-assembled monolayers

NiO/self-assembled monolayer (SAM) double hole transport layers (HTLs) has become the mainstream choice in high-efficiency single-junction and tandem perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the underlying role of NiO in double HTLs from the microscale is not systematically revealed currently. Herein, we reveal that NiO plays an important role in inducing a more uniform and thinner SAM from three aspects. Firstly, compared with indium tin oxide (ITO), the NiO surface exposes less crystal facet orientations and a higher metal atom density, suggesting that sufficient chemical binding sites for SAMs are provided to facilitate the close-packed assembly of SAMs. Secondly, NiO modified ITO exhibits smaller surficial roughness and strongly bonded −OH, which is beneficial to the uniform distribution of SAMs and strong adhesion to the NiO surface. Utilizing the well-constructed SAM, we fabricate wide-bandgap (>1.75 eV) PSCs using vacuum-assisted technology and achieve an impressive photoelectric conversion efficiency of 19.55 %. These findings not only deepen the understanding of SAM assembly on substrates but also provide essential guidance for the future industrialization of PSCs.

Filtered spectrum modeling of high-performance perovskite tandem solar cells: Tailoring absorber properties and electron/hole transport layers for 31.55 % efficiency

In this study, the perovskite tandem solar cell (TPSC) has been accomplished using SCAPS-1D. The present study focuses on comprehensive exploration and detailed optimization using various strategies constructing a tandem device. To calculate high photovoltaic power conversion efficiency (PCE), the numerical analysis has been carried out for a wide-bandgap halide (WBH) FA0.75Cs0·25Pb(I0·8Br0.2)3 of bandgap 1.67eV and a Pb–Sn based narrow-bandgap halide (NBH) FA0.7MA0.3Pb0·5Sn0·5I3 of bandgap 1.22eV as absorber layer in top-cell (TCELL) and bottom-cell (BCELL) respectively. The WBH has huge potential as a front light absorber and the NBH based BCELL provides stability and high performance by accepting high and low energy photons respectively. This method mitigates thermalization and non-absorbed photon loss which results in the growth in PCE. The proposed work demonstrates the impact of active-layer thickness along with defect density on the solar-cell parameters. It has been observed that defect density is low for the optimal performance. An investigation for various electron transport medium (ETMs) and hole transport medium (HTMs) has been done to secure an optimum performing TCELL as well as BCELL. Using filtered-spectrum study along with current-matching method, every PV metric parameter has been analyzed after their deployment into tandem configuration. The numerical investigation has shown promising photovoltaic parameters with aa high open circuit voltage (VOC) of 2.33 V, a short circuit current density (JSC) of 17.07 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 79.34 % and PCE of 31.55 % in tandem configuration.

High‐Throughput Indirect Gravure Printing Applied to Low‐Temperature Metallization of Silicon‐Based High‐Efficiency Solar Cells

Herein, this work is dedicated to a both exotic and promising printing technique in silicon (Si) photovoltaics (PV). Indirect gravure printing is investigated as a metallization technique focusing on low‐temperature applications, such as Si heterojunction (SHJ) and perovskite Si tandem solar cells. One advantage of this rotary printing technique is that its components are very durable. From graphical industry, it is known that gravure cylinders show almost no wearing during multiple printing. Additionally, rotary printing techniques offer great throughput. Therefore, indirect gravure printing can reduce costs significantly in PV production. In this work, short process cycle times of 0.9 s cell−1 for industrial wafers (edge length of 156.75 mm) are demonstrated. Using an appropriate production platform even enables cycle times of down to 0.5 s cell−1. Busbarless SHJ half cells with non‐optimized gravure‐printed front grids reach a mean photoconversion efficiency that is (1.7 ± 0.5) %abs lower compared to screen‐printed reference samples, however, cycle time is reduced. The metal contacts exhibit a mean shading width of (65 ± 16) μm and an average height of (5 ± 1) μm. Applied to SHJ solar cells’ rear, such metallization can replace screen‐printed contacts with 0.1%abs efficiency loss only, as device simulations reveal.

Ionic‐Rich Vermiculite Tailoring Dynamic Bottom‐Up Gradient for High‐Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells

AbstractMixed‐halide perovskites are emerging as excellent photovoltaic candidates because of their tunable bandgaps for semitransparent and tandem perovskite solar cells. However, the notorious film quality originated from the rapidly downward crystallization process susceptibly propagates enormous detrimental defects, which deteriorate the photovoltaic performance and accelerate halide segregation. To address this issue, herein, a multilayer alkalis‐intercalated‐vermiculite is employed as pre‐buried interface modifier to regulate the perovskite lattice property. The matchable lattice structure between perovskite and vermiculite by forming Pb─O bond not only releases the interfacial strain during the film growth but also the embedded alkalis ions can gradually diffuse into perovskite lattice to form a favorable vertical gradient owing to the weak interlamellar van der Waals interaction, playing bis‐roles of atomical lubricant and ion‐reservoir to eliminate detrimental defects. As a result, the film quality and lattice stability is significantly improved with suppressed phase segregation for mixed‐halide perovskites, accompanying a champion efficiency of 11.42% for carbon‐based CsPbIBr2 device, 15.25% for carbon‐based CsPbI2Br device and 23.17% for p‐i‐n inverted (Cs0.05MA0.05FA0.9)Pb(I0.93Br0.07)3 cell. This work provides a new strategy on buried interface engineering for making high‐efficiency and stable perovskite platforms.

Interface Reactive Sputtering of Transparent Electrode for High-Performance Monolithic and Stacked Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells.

Sputtered indium tin oxide (ITO) fulfills the requirements of top transparent electrodes (TTEs) in semitransparent perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and stacked tandem solar cells (TSCs), as well as of the recombination layers in monolithic TSCs. However, the high-energy ITO particles will cause damage to the devices. Herein, the interface reactive sputtering strategy is proposed to construct cost-effective TTEs with high transmittance and excellent carrier transporting ability. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is chosen as the interface reactant that can react with sputtered ITO nanoparticles,so that, coordination compounds can be formed during the deposition process, facilitating the carrier transport at the interface of C60/PEI/ITO. Besides, the impact force of energetic ITO particles is greatly alleviated, and the intactness of the underlying C60 layer and perovskite layer is guaranteed. Thus, the prepared semitransparent subcells achieve a significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.17%, surpassing those based on C60/ITO (11.64%). Moreover, the PEI-based devices demonstrate excellent storage stability, which maintains 98% of their original PCEs after 2000 h. On the strength of the interface reactive sputtering ITO electrode, a stacked all-perovskite TSC with a PCE of 26.89% and a monolithic perovskite-organic TSC with a PCE of 24.33% are successfully fabricated.

Design of Efficient Inverted NiOX‐Based Three‐Terminal Back‐Contact All Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells

AbstractThe development of efficient all perovskite tandem solar cells has faced challenges related to current matching and optical losses. In this work, a design of a non‐coplanar three‐terminal (3T) all perovskite tandem solar cell is presented, which consists of a p‐i‐n inverted NiOX‐based CsPbI2Br perovskite top cell, and a FA0.6MA0.4Sn0.5Pb0.5I3 perovskite bottom cell with back‐contact (BC) device structure. It effectively mitigated the optical losses introduced in non‐absorbing layers and resulted in a 2.9% absolute efficiency improvement compared to that of planar sandwich‐type 3T tandems. Both optical and electrical characteristics of the multi‐terminal tandem cells are investigated. Then, it is focused on understanding the impact of top cell thickness on overall non‐coplanar BC 3T‐tandem performance, considering low‐energy photon optical reflection and carrier transport distance. Following optimizations of energy level and device structure, an efficiency of 32.16% is achieved, with non‐coplanar BC 3T device architecture: top cell consisting of hole extraction layer (ITO/NiOx), CsPbI2Br absorber layer, and electron extraction layer (ZnO/FA0.6MA0.4Sn0.5Pb0.5I3/SnO2/Ag); and bottom cell (Ni/NiOx/FA0.6MA0.4Sn0.5Pb0.5I3/SnO2/Ag); bottom perovskite layer has two functions, one is electron transport layer for top cell, and the other is low‐energy photon absorption layer in bottom cell. It provides insight and a promising pathway for manufacturing high‐efficient all perovskite tandem solar cells.

Intermediate Phase Suppression with Long Chain Diammonium Alkane for High Performance Wide-Bandgap and Tandem Perovskite Solar Cells.

Wide bandgap (WBG) perovskite can construct tandem cells with narrow bandgap solar cells by adjusting the band gap to overcome the Shockley-Queisser limitation of single junction perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, WBG perovskites still suffer from severe nonradiative carrier recombination and large open-circuit voltage loss. Here, this work uses an in situ photoluminescence (PL) measurement to monitor the intermediate phase evolution and crystallization process via blade coating. This work reports a strategy to fabricate efficient and stable WBG perovskite solar cells through doping a long carbon chain molecule octane-1,8-diamine dihydroiodide (ODADI). It is found that ODADI doping not only suppresses intermediate phases but also promote the crystallization of perovskite and passivate defects in blade coated 1.67eV WBG FA0.7Cs0.25MA0.05Pb(I0.8Br0.2)3 perovskite films. As a result, the champion single junction inverted PSCs deliver the efficiencies of 22.06% and 19.63% for the active area of 0.07 and 1.02 cm2, respectively, which are the highest power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in WBG PSCs by blade coating. The unencapsulated device demonstrates excellent stability in air, which maintains its initial efficiency at the maximum power points under constant AM 1.5G illumination in open air for nearly 500h. The resulting semitransparent WBG device delivers a high PCE of 20.06%, and the 4-terminal all-perovskite tandem device delivers a PCE of 28.35%.

Reducing Hole Trap Density in Sn–Pb Perovskite Solar Cells via Molecular Phenylhydrazine

Narrow‐bandgap Sn–Pb‐alloyed perovskite is potential for a bottom cell in perovskite tandem solar cells. However, Sn‐contained perovskites tend to be readily oxidized in air atmosphere, which has ill influence on stability and photovoltaic performance. Herein, a method to suppress oxidation of divalent tin via post‐treatment of perovskite film with phenylhydrazine is reported. Phenylhydrazine‐treated FA0.5MA0.5Pb0.5Sn0.5I3 perovskite films effectively reduce the hole traps caused by the oxidation of Sn2+ on the perovskite surfaces. In addition, surface energetics are well aligned by post‐treatment, which is beneficial for voltage gain and charge transport. As a result, power conversion efficiency (PCE) is increased from 18.16% to 20.67% after post‐treatment due mainly to the significant improvement of open‐circuit voltage from 0.75 to 0.83 V. Furthermore, the device stability is improved, where 91.67% of initial PCE is maintained after 1000 h.

On Numerical Modelling and an Experimental Approach to Heterojunction Tandem Solar Cells Based on Si and Cu2O/ZnO—Results and Perspectives

A comparative analysis of three advanced architectures for tandem solar cells (SCs) is discussed, respectively: metal oxide, thin film, and perovskite. Plasmonic solar cells could further increase solar cell efficiency. Using this development, an innovative PV technology (an SHTSC based on metal oxides) represented by a four-terminal Cu2O/c-Si tandem heterojunction solar cell is investigated. The experimental and numerical modelling study defines the main aim of this paper. The experimental approach to SHTSCs is analysed: (1) a Cu2O layer is deposited using a magnetron sputtering system; (2) the morphological and optical characterization of Cu2O thin films is studied. The electrical modelling of silicon heterojunction tandem solar cells (SHTSCs) is discussed based on five simulation tools for the optimized performance evaluation of solar devices. The main novelty of this paper is represented by the following results: (1) the analysis suggests that the incorporation of a buffer layer can improve the performance of a tandem heterojunction solar cell; (2) the effect of interface defects on the electrical characteristics of the AZO/Cu2O heterojunction is discussed; (3) the stability of SHTSCs based on metal oxides is studied to highlight the degradation rate in order to define a reliable solar device. Perspectives on SHTSCs based on metal oxides, as well as Si perovskite tandem solar cells with metal oxides as carrier-selective contacts, are commented on.
