Synchrotron micro-computed tomography analysis of neutron-irradiated U-Mo fuel

The three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of neutron-irradiated uranium-10 wt.% molybdenum (U-10Mo) fuel with a burn-up of 9.8 × 1021 fissions/cm3 was characterized using a novel, multi-modal synchrotron micro-computed tomography approach combining propagation-based phase-contrast enhanced and absorption contrast techniques. The porosity development, porosity interconnectedness, swelling, composition, local thickness of the zirconium (Zr) diffusion barrier, and the influence of the fuel–cladding interaction on the local composition and pore morphology, were uniquely determined in 3D. Two cuboids were produced using a focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope at the Zr diffusion barrier–fuel interface and in the bulk fuel. The bulk fuel sample swelled by 53.3 [+9.7/−3.1]%, while the fuel near the Zr–fuel interface swelled by 63.3 [+14.7/−7.2]%. The average local thickness of the Zr diffusion barrier decreased by 53 %, compared to the expected pre-irradiated thickness. Four pore morphology regions were identified initiating parallel to the fuel–Zr interaction region: (1) an interaction layer of suppressed porosity, (2) a layer of elongated and interconnected porosity, (3) a transition zone of low porosity, and (4) a layer of unoriented porosity representative of the bulk fuel behavior. The increase in porosity near the diffusion barrier corresponded to a higher U concentration compared to that in the bulk fuel. The interconnected porosity in the fuel near the diffusion barrier was extensive and oriented parallel to the diffusion barrier, while the bulk fuel had more compact and isolated pore networks. The interaction layer, despite having suppressed porosity, was nearly 100 wt.% U. Porosity suppression at the diffusion barrier corresponds to the expected reduction in radiation-driven diffusion of Xe at the interface despite the anticipated increase in fission product nucleation originating from a higher U concentration. The novel 3D insights of the porosity, swelling, and compositional variations characterized herein can improve the fidelity of fuel performance codes for proliferation-resistant fuels for research and test reactors.

A multi-technique and multiscale comparative study on the efficiency of conservation methods for the stabilisation of waterlogged archaeological pine

Archaeological wood can be preserved in waterlogged conditions. Due to their degradation in the ground, these archaeological remains are endangered after their discovery, since they decay irretrievably during drying. Conservation measures are used to preserve waterlogged archaeological objects, maintaining their shape and character as much as possible. However, different methods have been developed leading to varying results. This study compares their effectiveness in order to clarify their mode of action. The methods including alcohol-ether resin, lactitol/trehalose, melamine formaldehyde, polyethylene glycol impregnation prior to freeze–drying, saccharose and silicone oil were assessed by analysing mass changes and volume stability using structured-light 3D scanning. The state of the conserved wood samples including the spatial distribution of the conservation agent was examined using synchrotron micro-computed tomography. Raman spectroscopy was used to observe the agent´s spatial distribution within the cells. The findings demonstrated that melamine formaldehyde stabilises the degraded cell walls. The lumens are void, as in the case with alcohol-ether resin, while polyethylene glycol, silicone oil, saccharose and lactitol/trehalose also occupy the lumens. It is assumed that the drying method has an effect on the distribution of the solidifying agent. The knowledge gained affords insights into the mechanism of conservation methods, which in turn accounts for the varied outcomes. It also allows conclusions to be drawn about the condition and stability of conserved museum objects and serves as a starting point for the further development of conservation methods.

Investigation of gradient properties for cement mortar interfacial transition zones and their effects on mechanical characteristics using micro-CT

The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in cement-based composites with aggregates is widely recognized as the most vulnerable component, greatly affecting their physical and mechanical properties. In this study, the effect of the ITZ characteristics on the mechanical behavior of cement mortar using its actual microstructure was investigated with image-based numerical approaches in this study. The volumetric information of the ITZ of the mortar sample was obtained and characterized from high-resolution synchrotron micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) images. The mechanical properties of the mortar were evaluated using the finite element method, based on the components characteristics represented by grayscale information of the micro-CT images. It was found that the adhesion between the aggregates and binder was well replicated in the simulation with the multiple-phase model, based on the gradient characteristics and properties of the ITZ. Considering the ITZ thickness according to the aggregates size, a more realistic crack propagation trend can be observed. The obtained results confirmed the significant influence of the ITZ thickness and phase distribution characteristics on the mechanical properties of cement mortars, emphasizing the importance of considering ITZ phases for accurate material analysis.

Characterizing the microstructures of mammalian enamel by synchrotron phase contrast microCT

The enamel of mammalian teeth is a highly mineralized tissue that must endure a lifetime of cyclic contact and is inspiring the development of next-generation engineering materials. Attempts to implement enamel-inspired structures in synthetic materials have had limited success, largely due to the absence of a detailed understanding of its microstructure. The present work used synchrotron phase-contrast microCT imaging to evaluate the three-dimensional microstructure of enamel from four mammals including Lion, Gray Wolf, Snow Leopard, and Black Bear. Quantitative results of image analysis revealed that the decussation pattern of enamel consists of discrete diazone (D) and parazone (P) bands of rods organized with stacking arrangement of D+/P/D-/P in all mammals evaluated; the D+ and D- refer to distinct diazone bands with juxtaposed rod orientations from the reference plane. Furthermore, the rod orientations in the bands can be described in terms of two principal angles, defined here as the pitch and yaw. While the pitch angle increases from the outer enamel to a maximum (up to ≈ 40°) near the dentin enamel junction, minimal spatial variations are observed in yaw across the enamel thickness. There are clear differences in the decussation parameters of enamel across species that are interpreted here with respect to the structural demands placed on their teeth. The rod pitch and band width of enamel are identified as important design parameters and appear to be correlated with the bite force quotient of the four mammals evaluated. Statement of significanceThe multi-functionality of tooth enamel requires both hardness and resistance to fracture, properties that are generally mutually exclusive. Ubiquitous to all mammalian teeth, the enamel is expected to have undergone adaptations in microstructure to accommodate the differences in diet, body size and bite force across animals. For the first time, we compare the complex three-dimensional microstructure of enamel from teeth of multiple mammalian species using synchrotron micro-computed tomography. The findings provide new understanding of the “design” of mammalian enamel microstructures, as well as how specific parameters associated with the decussation of rods appear to be engineered to modulate its fracture resistance.

Synchrotron micro-CT in kink-band formation of UD-CFRP laminates with microdefects

This paper presents the first synchrotron micro-Computed Tomography (micro-CT) study on in-situ pure compressive kink-band failure in Uni-Directional Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymer composites (UD-CFRPs) with a notch. The study compares the failure behaviour of baseline samples under standard conditions with defect-rich samples containing micro-defects such as voids and fibre misalignment. Quantitative image-based analysis using the structure tensor technique and Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) reveals changes in fibre orientation and localised strain, respectively, at each increment load. A large 400 μm kink-band inclined at 30° with a half-cosine wave fibre orientation is observed in the baseline samples, while the defect-rich samples form narrower conjugate kink bands (ranging from 77 μm 25 μm) inclined at 45°. Development of kink-band formations/failure of both samples is discussed and compared with literature, providing key implications for the design and safe use of this type of composite layup.

Influence of X-Ray beam exposure on the development of gas bubbles during triaxial testing of sand using 3D synchrotron micro-computed tomography

The constitutive behavior of granular materials is highly influenced by the degree of saturation and whether a saturated or unsaturated framework is adopted to model the behavior of granular materials. Conventional axisymmetric triaxial compression (CTC) testing of saturated specimens tends to assume that the specimen remains saturated during shearing. X-ray computed tomography (CT) has allowed for 3D in-situ measurements beyond the global scale to investigate microscale and localized events such as fabric evolution. The literature reported several CT-coupled geotechnical experiments of saturated specimens; however, no study examined how X-ray exposure might affect the specimen, specifically the radiolysis of pore water. In this study, we present the synchrotron micro-computed tomography (SMT) results of experiments performed on sand specimens without shearing (acrylic tubes) and with shearing (CTC experiments) to assess the influence of X-ray exposure on the development of the gas phase of saturated sand. The observed phase changes were dependent on the initial pore water pressure and duration of exposure to the X-ray; the behavior of individual gas bubbles was dependent on the bubble’s surrounding sand grains and pore throat sizes leading to changes in the degree of saturation.

Environment effect on internal fatigue crack propagation studied with in-situ X-ray microtomography

In the present study, physically short fatigue cracks initiated from an artificial internal notch under vacuum conditions are observed in smooth specimens made of titanium alloy. The crack initiated from such a notch is not in contact with the surface during the majority of its propagation. Another batch of artificially notched specimens in the same alloy having their internal notch linked with the surface to bring air to the initiated short crack were tested too. All the specimens were ultrasonically cycled with synchrotron micro-computed tomography acquisitions which were regularly acquired from crack initiation detection to final failure without demounting the specimen. The number of cycles to failure, the internal crack growth rate and the crack growth mechanisms of internal cracks are compared for propagation under either air conditions or in the core of the alloy (i.e. under vacuum environment). It is shown that the environment plays a key role in the explanation of the very low crack growth rate of internal short crack loaded at very low stress amplitude leading to the gigacycle regime.

Morphological and organic spectroscopic studies of a 44-million-year-old leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in amber with endogenous remains of chitin

This study details the quality of preservation of amber deposits in the Eocene. Through Baltic amber crack-out studies using Synchrotron Micro-Computed Tomography and Scanning Electron Microscopy it was found that the cuticle of a specimen of leaf beetle (Crepidodera tertiotertiaria (Alticini: Galerucinae: Chrysomelidae)) is exceptionally well preserved. Spectroscopic analysis using Synchrotron Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy suggests presence of degraded upalpha-chitin in multiple areas of the cuticle, and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy supports the presence of organic preservation. This remarkable preservation is likely the result of several factors such as the favourable antimicrobial and physical shielding properties of Baltic amber as compared to other depositional media, coupled to rapid dehydration of the beetle early in its taphonomic process. We provide evidence that crack-out studies of amber inclusions, although inherently destructive of fossils, are an underutilised method for probing exceptional preservation in deep time.

Multiscale mechanical design of the lightweight, stiff, and damage-tolerant cuttlebone: A computational study

Cuttlebone, the endoskeleton of cuttlefish, offers an intriguing biological structural model for designing low-density cellular ceramics with high stiffness and damage tolerance. Cuttlebone is highly porous (porosity ∼93%) and lightweight (density less than 20% of seawater), constructed mainly by brittle aragonite (95 wt%), but capable of sustaining hydrostatic water pressures over 20 atmospheres and exhibits energy absorption capability under compression comparable to many metallic foams (∼4.4 kJ/kg). In this work, we computationally investigate how such remarkable mechanical efficiency is enabled by the multiscale structure of cuttlebone. Using the common cuttlefish, Sepia Officinalis, as a model system, we first conducted high-resolution synchrotron micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) and quantified the cuttlebone's multiscale geometry, including the 3D asymmetric shape of individual walls, the wall assembly patterns, and the long-range structural gradient of walls across the entire cuttlebone (ca. 38 chambers). The acquired 3D structural information enables systematic finite-element simulations, which further reveal the multiscale mechanical design of cuttlebone: at the wall level, wall asymmetry provides optimized energy absorption while maintaining high structural stiffness; at the chamber level, variation of walls (number, pattern, and waviness amplitude) contributes to progressive damage; at the entire skeletal level, the gradient of chamber heights tailors the local mechanical anisotropy of the cuttlebone for reduced stress concentration. Our results provide integrated insights into understanding the cuttlebone's multiscale mechanical design and provide useful knowledge for the designs of lightweight cellular ceramics. Statement of significanceCuttlebone has been demonstrated to be a biological ceramic cellular material with remarkable lightweight, high stiffness and energy absorption. However, our knowledge on how such mechanical properties are enabled by cuttlebone's multiscale structure is not complete. Here, we combine systematic tomography-based 3D structural analysis and finite-element simulations to reveal how the hierarchical structure of cuttlebone at multiple length scales synergistically contribute to cuttlebone's impressive mechanical efficiency. These findings have important implications for designing biomimetic low-density cellular ceramic materials.

Three-dimensional microstructure of a friction stir welded magnesium/steel interface characterized via high-energy synchrotron X-rays

The three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of a friction stir assisted scribe technique (FaST) weld interface consisting of AZ31 magnesium (Mg) alloy and zinc (Zn)-coated DP590 steel was analyzed via synchrotron micro-computed tomography (μ-CT), correlated to synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. Diffraction assessment of the AZ31/Zn-coated DP590 steel interface revealed the presence of several complex Mg–Zn intermetallic phases and differences in crystalline orientation of the Mg phase at the weld interface. The 3D characterization of the synchrotron μ-CT images of the weld interface revealed: (1) the presence of AZ31 weld nugget material with iron (Fe)-rich particles; (2) the presence of a weld layer at the joining interface with Fe-rich particles; (3) the formation of a thin non-uniform layer between the weld layer and the interface of the scribed DP590 material; and (4) the presence of an Fe–Al-rich intermetallic layer and Fe-rich particles at the interface of the scribed DP590 material. This study also performed a detailed analysis of lump-like features seen in the Zn coating layer at the weld interface. A detailed 3D particle analysis of the Fe-rich particles in the AZ31 weld nugget and the weld layer at the weld interface revealed the presence of several types of particle morphologies (i.e., spherical and irregular).

4D evolution of Cr23C6 precipitates in neutron-irradiated and annealed HT-UPS steel observed via synchrotron micro-computed tomography

High-temperature-ultrafine precipitate strengthened (HT-UPS) steel is a potential structural material for advanced nuclear reactors; however, its irradiation response is not well understood. This research provides insight into irradiation-induced effects, such as precipitate evolution mechanisms and four-dimensional morphological evolution, in HT-UPS steel using synchrotron micro-computed tomography. Identical specimens were characterized pre-irradiation and post-irradiation following neutron exposure up to 0.3 displacements per atom at 600 °C. Irradiation effects were also differentiated from the annealing response of precipitates. Following neutron irradiation, the average Cr23C6 precipitate size reduced, affected by the synergy of nucleation and growth, ballistic dissolution, and inverse coarsening, which was observed at fluences an order of magnitude lower than previously observed. Annealing at 600 °C for 32 h increased the average Cr23C6 precipitate size and decreased the phase fraction, attributed to precipitate coarsening. The precipitate morphology evolution and resultant mechanisms can be utilized to parameterize and validate microstructural models simulating radiation damage or annealing.Graphical abstract

Alpine dwarf shrubs show high proportions of nonfunctional xylem: Visualization and quantification of species-specific patterns.

Xylem conductive capacity is a key determinant of plant hydraulic function and intimately linked to photosynthesis and productivity, but can be impeded by temporary or permanent conduit dysfunctions. Here we show that persistent xylem dysfunctions in unstressed plants are frequent in Alpine dwarf shrubs and occur in various but species-specific cross-sectional patterns. Combined synchrotron micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging, xylem staining, and flow measurements in saturated samples of six widespread Ericaceae species evidence a high proportion (19%-50%) of hydraulically nonfunctional xylem areas in the absence of drought stress, with regular distribution of dysfunctions between or within growth rings. Dysfunctions were only partly reversible and reduced the specific hydraulic conductivity to 1.38 to 3.57 ×10-4 m2 s-1 MPa-1 . Decommission of inner growth rings was clearly related to stem age and a higher vulnerability to cavitation of older rings, while the high proportion of nonfunctional conduits in each annual ring needs further investigations. The lower the xylem fraction contributing to the transport function, the higher was the hydraulic efficiency of conducting xylem areas. Improved understanding of the functional lifespan of xylem elements and the prevalence and nature of dysfunctions is critical to correctly assess structure-function relationships and whole-plant hydraulic strategies.

The Potential of Stereolithography for 3D Printing of Synthetic Trabecular Bone Structures.

Synthetic bone models are used to train surgeons as well as to test new medical devices. However, currently available models do not accurately mimic the complex structure of trabecular bone, which can provide erroneous results. This study aimed to investigate the suitability of stereolithography (SLA) to produce synthetic trabecular bone. Samples were printed based on synchrotron micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) images of human bone, with scaling factors from 1 to 4.3. Structure replicability was assessed with micro-CT, and mechanical properties were evaluated by compression and screw pull-out tests. The overall geometry was well-replicated at scale 1.8, with a volume difference to the original model of <10%. However, scaling factors below 1.8 gave major print artefacts, and a low accuracy in trabecular thickness distribution. A comparison of the model–print overlap showed printing inaccuracies of ~20% for the 1.8 scale, visible as a loss of smaller details. SLA-printed parts exhibited a higher pull-out strength compared to existing synthetic models (Sawbones ™), and a lower strength compared to cadaveric specimens and fused deposition modelling (FDM)-printed parts in poly (lactic acid). In conclusion, for the same 3D model, SLA enabled higher resolution and printing of smaller scales compared to results reported by FDM.

3D Fabric Analysis in Fault Rock Using Synchrotron μ-CT: A Statistical Approach to SPO (Shape Preferred Orientation) for Estimation of Fault Motion

This study provides information about fault motion by statistically presenting shape and orientation information for tens of thousands of grains. The recently developed shape preferred orientation (SPO) measurement method using synchrotron micro-computed tomography was used. In addition, various factors that were not considered in previous SPO analysis were analyzed in-depth. The study area included the Yangsan and Ulsan fault zones, which are the largest fault zones in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Samples were collected from five outcrops in two regions. According to the field observation results, the samples in the area were largely divided into fault gouge and cataclasite, and as a result of SPO analysis, we succeeded in restoring the three-dimensional fault motion direction for each outcrop and identified the fault type. In addition, the analysis results of the fault gouge and cataclasite samples collected from the thin fault zone were interpreted using the focal mechanism solution. As a result, the statistical SPO analysis approach supplements the shortcomings of previous research methods on two-dimensional planes and can quantitatively infer the three-dimensional fault motion for various fault rock samples in the same sequence, thus, presenting useful evidence for structural analysis.

Spicules and skeletons: mantle musculature of two species of dorid nudibranchs (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia: Doridina).

Molluscs often possess complex calcified elements in addition to the shell, but how these elements function and relate to other tissues is often poorly understood. Dorid nudibranchs typically possess innumerable calcareous spicules arranged in complex networks. To describe how these spicules interact with muscles and connective tissue, we reconstructed tomographic digital models using serial sections and synchrotron micro-computed tomography. In two species with dramatically different spicule network morphologies, musculature was divided into a dorsal layer of crossed fibres, a ventral layer of branching radial fibres, and scattered dorsoventral fibres in between. These two species differed in the size of their dorsal tubercles, which was reflected in the organization of dorsal musculature, and in the amount and organization of connective tissue. In Platydoris sanguinea Bergh, 1905, dense mats of spicules sandwiched a layer of connective tissue with fewer spicules and muscle insertions only onto the ventral spicules. In Cadlina luteomarginata MacFarland, 1966, thick tracts of spicules are surrounded by a sheath of connective tissue. Muscles surround and insert into the dorsal tubercle spicule layer. Thus, both species appear to use the spicule network for muscle antagonism and transfer of motion, but the different arrangement of elements suggests that they use this skeleton in quite different ways.

Effect of carbonation on cement paste microstructure characterized by micro-computed tomography

The carbonation of cement paste changes its microstructural characteristics. The porosity of the cement paste microstructure is reduced when calcite is produced from the reaction between portlandite and carbon dioxide. In this study, such microstructural changes were investigated using image analyses of the 3D microstructures obtained with synchrotron micro-computed tomography (CT). When two sets of samples were subjected to different degrees of carbonation, the porosity and pore size reductions were identified from the micro-CT images. The formation of calcite caused by the reaction of portlandite was indirectly identified by the reduction of the mean grayscale value or linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) of the solid phase voxels. It was confirmed that micro-CT could also be used as a supplementary tool for the analysis of the microstructural evolution of cement paste under carbonation.

Four-Dimensional Dynamic Synchrotron Microcomputed Tomography Imaging of Gas-Water Interface at High Pressure and Low Temperature

It is challenging to separate water from gas phases in computed tomography images of three-phase granular materials because water and most gases have close attenuation coefficients for x-ray. This article presents two techniques for three-dimensional (3D) imaging using synchrotron microcomputed tomography (SMT). Monochromatic x-ray beam that can be tuned for a specific energy level was used for a dual energy SMT that takes advantage of a sudden change in attenuation at the absorption edge of iodine. A solution of 4 % by weight potassium iodide (KI) and distilled water was used as a doping agent to saturate a column of sand as a test sample. The article focuses on how the technique was employed to image a column of sand as the degree of saturation changes. Water and air were separated easily, and the degree of saturation was calculated for the sand column at different drainage conditions. The article also presents a description of a high-pressure, low-temperature flow cell suitable for SMT imaging for dynamic monitoring of gas hydrate formation and dissociation. High photon flux beam (pink beam) enabled fast 4D imaging (3D plus time) of xenon gas hydrate formation. Hydrate specific area increased initially with increasing hydrate saturation and began to decrease after a threshold, which is evidence of Ostwald Ripening. For hydrate saturation less than 10 %, the predominant pore-habit was surface coating. Cementing pore-habit was observed at 15 % hydrate saturation, and pore-filling hydrate pore-habit was observed with further increase in hydrate saturation.

Influence of crystal structure on constitutive anisotropy of silica sand at particle-scale

In spite of recent advanced geotechnical research regarding the influence of particle-scale morphology and fabric on the constitutive behavior of silica sands, there is still no published literature that investigated the influence of crystal structure of sand particles on their constitutive behavior. The main constituent of silica sand particles is quartz mineral, which has a trigonal crystal system and hexagonal lattice. This paper investigates the influence of quartz crystal structure on the constitutive response of silica sand particles using 3D X-ray diffraction (3DXRD), synchrotron micro-computed tomography (SMT), and 3D finite element (FE) analysis. Unconfined uniaxial compression experiments on single particles of synthetic silica cubes exposed the notion of constitutive anisotropy caused by the crystal structure of quartz. Since the silica cubes have simple regular geometry 1mm3, they were loaded in different directions with respect to their crystal local planes. The crystal structure was also identified for a natural silica sand specimen composed of 2705 particles and loaded in confined uniaxial compression. Physical limitations of the experimental measurements made a strong case for the use of 3D FE analysis to study how the change in crystal local orientation of individual sand particles can fundamentally produce anisotropy in the constitutive response of natural sand specimens. The 3D FE analysis was validated to accurately model the crystal-based constitutive anisotropy in silica particles using the results of the silica cube experiments. The analysis was then executed on 3D FE meshes that closely matched the physical shape and fabric of the 2705 particles in the natural sand specimen. Both the experiments and 3D FE analysis showed that the crystal structure of quartz essentially causes a directional anisotropy in the constitutive behavior of silica particles.

Crack initiation and propagation in braided SiC/SiC composite tubes: Effect of braiding angle

Crack initiation and propagation in three braided SiC/SiC composite tubes with different braiding angles are investigated by in situ tensile tests with synchrotron micro-computed tomography. Crack networks are precisely detected after an image subtraction procedure based on Digital Volume Correlation. FFT based simulations are performed on the full-resolution 3D images to assess elastic stress/strain fields. Quantitative measurements of the crack geometries are performed using a novel method based on grey levels. The results show that braiding angle has no obvious effect on the location of crack onsets (initiation always occurs at tow interfaces), whereas it significantly affects the paths of crack propagation. This work provides an explicit demonstration of the crack propagation scenarios with respect to the mesoscopic fibre architectures.

The application of synchrotron micro-computed tomography to characterize the three-dimensional microstructure in irradiated nuclear fuel

This research demonstrated the first time that synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) was utilized to analyze the three-dimensional (3-D) morphology of the microstructure of irradiated nuclear fuel. Both absorption contrast and propagation-based phase contrast enhanced μ-CT techniques were evaluated. Porosity and phase region volumes were determined in neutron irradiated uranium 10 wt% zirconium (U–10Zr) using propagation-based phase contrast enhanced μ-CT. Volumes were calculated using image processing software and algorithms, with the porosity volume subsequently compared to the ASTM E562 method. The 3-D porosity of a small region (∼8 × 105 μm3) located in the intermediate fuel redistribution zone that was removed via a focused ion beam was determined to be 7.2% via image processing. A detailed 3-D analysis of the porosity with respect to volume and morphology was provided. Five growth stages of pore evolution were observed including: nucleation, growth, coalescence, interconnected porosity, and extended/interconnected porosity. Four distinct phase regions were identified, including the pores, via both absorption contrast and propagation-based phase contrast enhanced μ-CT. A quantitative comparison of fuel swelling between this localized microscopic U–10Zr fuel region that was previously irradiated in the Fast Flux Test Facility, and historic U–10Zr fuels irradiated in the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II), was conducted. It was determined that for similar burnups, the localized swelling in this microscopic fuel region was 7.7%, which was approximately one-half of the value of the macroscopic swelling reported in EBR-II irradiated fuel. With the advent of new specimen preparation tools for irradiated materials, as well as advances in characterization techniques, researchers can now obtain previously inaccessible microstructural insight into irradiated fuels. This possibility naturally lends itself to improved fuel performance models for the nuclear community.
